No one knew what it was initially. I seen it on CNN as I was just watching the channel as I do most days. It had a mushroom top, it looked nuclear.

You'd see very few people walking around no bother if that was nuclear ffs

Mushroom cloud doesn't necessarily mean nuclear it just needs a lot of something explosive and endothermic enough to result in Kelvin-Helmholtz instabilities. A large amount of chemicals or in this case fireworks can cause one too. On a smaller scale. 

Someone did chemistry in college
 just in first year, I'm a materials scientist. Used to work in nuclear for a while so got quite interested in it. Sorry if I came across as a spanner.
