1990 was the first one I saw but I’ve been looking at the FIFA documentaries of the previous World Cups (They are on YouTube).

1986 looks a great World Cup.
Madonna truly was the best player ever at the peak of his powers. He took some kicking too.
3-2 in a Final takes some beating.

Platini misses a peno for France to win it but they beat Brazil anyways. The French really are Brazil’s bogey team.

How did Canada qualify? And 14 European teams out of 24?? Thats more than half.

Scotland taking the lead against Brazil! That was some Brazil team too.

All the players look like German porn stars . Long hair, moustaches... and they all look in their 40’s.
Are we getting younger looking?

Didn’t realise Mexico had an earthquake the previous year.
Watching the fans as they win their first match was unbelievable.
All the footage of the fans looks great. You can tell how much it means to them. The athmosphere at the stadiums and outside look amazing.
Simplier times - no selfies, drunkenness, social media

One of the best and I highly recommend people watching it.

Have started watching 1982.... Report to follow.

Scotland didn't play Brazil in '86! Are you sure you watched the right video?

Most of us will always base this on emotion and nostalgia. Same for me, and1994 to me will always be the best.

Being 13 years old at the time meant it was the first World Cup I could actively enjoy and get excited about. And to top it off Ireland and Holland were both in it!

Looking back at it now it was also the last World Cup before the Bosman arrest changed football forever. Money and commercial interest hadn't yet taken over the game fully and the fact that there was no real internet yet meant that everything was still a bit of a mystery surrounding many of the players and countries that were taking part. There was still a bit of romance of simpler times.

My Bad, I finished 86 last night and watched the first half of 82.
82 was when Scotland lead Brazil for about 10 mins and then Brazil won 4-1.

I know I'm hungover and therefore more irritable, but my bad must be the most annoying of all the Americanisms.

Dude, you totally have never been in America.

In the 1982 WC you also get the chance to see a young Martin O’Neil playing football on the ground.
Some viewers may find this disturbing.

And Gerry Armstrong scoring a header almost on the line as it rebounded back off the bar. The commentator said “Armstrong, deadly from six inches”.

1978 Gary, Really?
Just finished the FIFA documentary and it was terrible.
I know it was the 70's but those pitches were a disgrace. You couldn't play football on some of them.

Also you had Brazil v Argentina which should have been a cracking game and finished a dull 0-0.

Kempes was brilliant for Argentina but they had an advantage of playing last in each group knowing what result was needed to qualify.
That Dutch team minus Cruyff were not that good although they hit the post in the last minute and could have won the World Cup.

I didn't realise a young 17 Maradona was considered for the squad. He made his senor debut a year before.

Didn't realise when Renton says he hadn't felt this good since Archie Gemmill scored against the Dutch it was a game that Scotland actually needed to win by 3 clear goals to qualify.

Overall the football was poor, not helped by the pitches.

I always had it in my head that that goal put them into the next round, as it stood.

too young for 78 but from what have I read, Argentina literal stole the cup. Crazy calls all the way through and had to beat a great Peruvian team to make the final or semi final by 4 and win by 5. Sure.

Nah, the Gemmell goal meant they needed one more but they had all the momentum at that stage. Seconds Dutch goal killed the game.

That's the first World Cup game I can really remember watching. Vaguely remember the Peru Scotland tie as it was a shock but not much about the match.

The criticism that can be levelled at it can equally be levelled at club football. The commercialisation, the identikit stadia, and so on.

The caginess of the football on show at a World Cup may be worse, but club football is much more predictable. Goals per game may be lower in the modern era, but football has always been more than just about the statistics. Italia 90 being the best example.

The advantage a World Cup has is that it takes one month to sort out who is the best. Five or six teams can win the tournament, and it only takes place once every four years.

In comparison, club football takes eight or nine months, and like US politics, whoever spends the most usually wins. Before the big European leagues have even begun we know who the winners will be next season. Barcelona, Juventus, Bayern, PSG, and Manchester City.

The European Cup has also been diluted into the Champions League. Loads of teams, and months and months of football to work out which team out of four or five is the best.

However awful FIFA behaves, you can't win a World Cup with oil money. You need a history and tradition of producing great players and teams.

And most all of the players wear the shirt they were born into. No kissing the crest one week and moving to a rival the next. So that helps keep the tournament competitive.

The problem the World Cup will face in the future is expansion. But even then it will still take a team a month and seven games to reach the final.

All of my World Cup predictions were terrible, but I was able to pick the league winners months before a ball was even kicked.

The big leagues are almost sclerotic at this stage. They have the appearance of something going on, while in reality nothing is going on.

Atletico, Napoli, Dortmund and Liverpool are like a form of misdirection, occasionally helping to give these leagues the illusion of competition. Ligue 1 doesn't even bother with the illusion.

However good or bad international football is, it has one thing going for it, and that happens to be the most important thing - competition.
