Cannot understand why Dybala is not getting a chance. Higuain has been terrible as has Mesa.

I also think that the manner of how Argentina scraped through could galvanize the squad. I wouldn't write them off against France.

Argentina are all over the shop and France should really batter them on Sat but I think it going to be an open game....
France to win but only by a single goal.

Yeah sure France haven't looked great so far at all either. I'm sure they'll go in as favourites but you would expect it to be a close one.

Felt sorry for Nigeria last night but was happy the Argies got through. The longer the likes of Messi and Ronaldo stay in the tournament the better.

Sampaoli’s a clown that’s why. Same reason Mascherano is starting and Di Maria is getting so much game time.

A video on twitter doing the rounds of sampaoli tentatively asking messi if it was time to introduce aguero. Messi definitely running the revolt, sampaoli only still there so not to cause the media to go into overdrive on it

A couple of thoughts on Argentina and Sampaoli.

- I understand why Higuain is picked. A target man forces the opposition to try and stop crosses into the box and that in turn makes them defend less narrow which obviously leaves a bit more space centrally. Basically the fullbacks can't sit in tight beside their centre backs which is what Iceland did. If you have a load of midgets playing then the opposition will happily cede the flanks and dare you to put crosses in the box.
- Di Maria should be dropped.
- Banega was excellent and a ball playing alternative to Messi is essential.
-A follow on the point above. If everything goes through Messi then it's ridiculously predictable and easy to crowd him out. They need to vary their build up play more.
- Mascher needs to go. He has plenty of heart and is a leader but the legs are gone and his passing is atrocious. Nigeria were leaving him unmarked to let him get on the ball as they knew he would cough up possession.
- I don't think Dybala can play with Messi although Colombia played with James and Quintero (not exactly like for like I know) and it worked brilliantly. It's difficult to squeeze two lads who want to be roaming #10's into the team.

I'd love to see them do a job on France but the Argentine defensively frailty is going to cost them I think. Hopefully it's a good game anyway

The points you mention are why Dybala should be starting in a front three with Messi and Aguero, with two holders and Banega behind. It is so predictable at times, putting another clever, skilful player up there would make defenders have to think.

Mascherano was ok at times last night and horrendous in others. He won some brilliant tackles but his passing is nowhere near the level required now. Di Maria is a complete lost cause. He might be the worst player I have watched in the tournament.

I'm not disputing that is an attractive sounding solution but you have three lads playing very narrow there. I don't see any width and it will be very easy for France to crowd them out.
That's my point regarding Higuain, he is a proper target man and his presence means the opposing full backs need to get wide and stop crosses coming in to him. That creates space centrally for Messi to play.
That's my take on why Higuain is picked, I'm not suggesting that he was particularly impressive.

Messi and Dybala both drift wide anyway and are both clever enough to take it in turns and swap sides. There is the defensive danger of playing two players in free roles, which is why two holders are needed. I understand what you are saying about Higuain, he has just looked a little off the pace so far. Not that he has been alone in that .

If Argentina play the same way as they have done for the majority of the tournament, France will find them very easy to defend against. They need to try a different approach.

I would not be surprised if Argentina knock out France.
Same as I would not be surprised if England reach the semis.

Said before a ball was kicked that this is gonna be a strange WC like 2002.

Would love to see Croatia win it.

Agreed on Croatia Gary. I love watching traditionally unfancied sides winning big matches whilst playing attractive football. Fair play to the likes of Iceland and Iran for getting results also but it's a lot easier to defend in depth and look to nick one than to go out and play expansively. With the level of talent in that Croatia squad, it will take a lot to knock them out.

A potential quarter final between Spain and Croatia could be brilliant to watch.

That would be superb. I tipped Spain to win the World Cup before the tournament started but Croatia will cause anyone serious problems

It's part of the problem for Argentina. Perez and Di Maria have been so poor Messi has felt the need to drift wide and come deep, previously he never had this problem with Lavezzi out wide.

Banega should of started from day 1, said that but I'm not convinced anymore Mascherano should be the one alongside him, good ideas just well past his peak. But all the service is coming from the central which is making them so one dimensional and predictable

f**k me he is beyond sh*te for Argentina
Mascherano is running him pretty damn close!

Na Masherano was quality in qualifying, he's definitely past his peak now.

But Di Maria has been lost for well over a year now, absolutely abysmal. His closest rival for the title would be Perez.

No he wasn't.
