These horrible box nets just aren't up to scratch.   That Wan Bassaka goal against Newcastle would have looked far more spectacular with the old style looped stanchion and netting.  It would have bulged and backspinned down the net at a 45 degree angle until it hit the ground and the keeper would have had to pull up the net to get it retrieve it for the kick off.

The things the modern generation will never get.

I see at the Euros the standard netting is that which resembles a Blockbusters game board. Obviously, they would have been used in Dublin, had the games been held. But, I wonder if they would have continued to be used after the tournament, or would we go back to the square nets?

The hexagonals were first seen by me at Italia 90.  Whether they are an Italian design I am not sure.
There was inconsistency in the nets at Italia 90 with some stadiums like Bari and Genoa having square netting.

The dreaded box netting insisted by UEFA/FIFA now replaced the all time great Wembley stanchions that had stood in place for decades.  A crime against stanchion engineering of the football artisans.

What will be for sure is that most stadiums will revert to their customary squares once the Euro is over.

Except for the Italians.  They love a 6 sided net.

It's a little known fact that the song Nessun Dorma translates as Hexagonal Nets Never Die

Did like the Old Trafford one up till 1994. Think the nets continued till 1996. Were changed for Euro 96.

They had something similar at Upton Park in 2006-2007, but they changed it for the Brighton cup game in January 2007. I did like those, but it did have the vibe that they cut the stanchion and left the goalpost.
