Stan was the wrong man at the wrong time no doubt, but he was badly let down by some high profile players.  I saw the Cyprus 5-2 goals again recently and some of the defending was abysmal, by some supposed top defenders including O'Shea.
Jackie Charlton, Eoin Hand
Johnny Giles. Ireland
Mick McCarthy, Stephen Staunton
Cascarino
Tony Galvin, Niall Quinn

Saw a post on foot.ie where someone was defending Staunton's reign and comparing it favourably to Kenny's. Another person responded that Kenny had an abundance of riches, listing the starters and substitutes in the infamous loss to Cyprus as an example.

When you look at the team that started, there wasn't a single proper midfielder in it for a start, unless you count Stephen Ireland, and he was more of a ten. Jonathan Douglas was the only out and out midfielder involved, and he came off the bench.

In hindsight, it was a really bizarre, disjointed, looking team on paper that day.

There was a lot of that, shoehorning players in just to get them all into the team. O'Shea played everywhere but CB that campaign. LB, RB & MF.
