On Saturday 14th June 2008, Galway United Supporters Trust hosted the
inaugural Eircom League Supporters Cup. The tournament took place at
Mervue United complex, with 6 teams compeating for the ultimate glory.
Of the 6 teams, GUST had 4 representitive sides while St. Pats and iSTAT,
the Independent Supporters Trust of Athlone Town, took the other places.
iSTAT lost the opening match 2-0 to the first GUST side, but post match
analysis attributed the defeat to lack of firepower. This was rectified in
time for the second group game where De Athlone inflicted a crushing 7-1
defeat to the second Galway side. This result saw Athlone finish 2nd in the
"Group Of Death" to qualify for the knock out stages.
In the semi final, Athlone faced the pre-tournament favourites
Galway/Mervue, in a game that went right down to the wire with a 2-2
scoreline at full time. Golden Goal extra time ... with a twist ... followed as
both keepers were given their marching orders for the duration of extra
time. The Athlone side kept a cool head and went through to the final after
the tie was decided with a penalty .
The final provided another close game however Athlone just shaded it
on a 3-2 scoreline to bring the first piece of Sliverwear back to Town since
the 1992 Leinster Senior Cup!
