Roddy set for management return
March 12, 2008
Roddy Collins is set for a return to League of Ireland management as part of a takeover of First Division side Longford Town.
The ebullient Dubliner helped Bohemians to a League and Cup Double before stints at Carlisle United, Dublin City and Shamrock Rovers.
He has engaged in media work for the past three years, with commitments to RTE, Newstalk and the Irish Daily Star Sunday.
But a proposed takeover of Longford Town by McMullens Properties is likely to see Roddy back on the eircom League scene.
The midlanders were relegated last season following a hugely successful eight-year stay in the top flight, during which time they won the FAI Cup in 2003 and 2004.
Manager Alan Mathews and top scorer Dave Mooney decamped to Cork City as part of a major exodus during the winter months, but the incoming owners are keen to bring back the good times.
The company’s Managing Director, former Ireland youth international Anthony McMullen, told the Irish Daily Star: “We want to take Longford back to the Premier Division, back to winning trophies and back into Europe.
“That is Roddy’s dream and that is my dream. And with the resources we can put into the club, these are very realistic goals.”

Although he can be a muppet sometimes....he's a character we need in our game and could only be a good thing to seem him back. A young Eamo Dunphy

Although he didn't really do much at Rovers, I actually like the chap, the League needs characters that you love to hate. The Rod Squad during his time at Carlisle was just brilliant.

I think so HM! I remember him absolutely berating a linesman during the documentary and giving him dog's abuse, then seconds later he just says to him quietly "I'll tell your Ma".........fookin brilliant!

Agreed, good to see him back if he does go there, he's a character and the game needs them. People sometimes forget the brilliant job he done at bohs, when he managed rovers he had to sell all the best players durin the season for financial reasons and still managed some very good results, unfortunately the 8 points deduction got us relegated. I do know one longford fan and they wont be happy if he gets appointed by the sounds of it
