Ten men Ireland beat Ukraine
Republic of Ireland 1-0 Ukraine Seán McCaffrey's side shrugged off Robert Brady's dismissal to move above the Group 3 hosts into second. The Republic of Ireland kept alive their hopes of qualifying from Group 3 of the UEFA European Under-19 Championship elite round with a 1-0 victory against hosts Ukraine. Seán McCaffrey's side opened with a 1-0 loss against England on Wednesday but have now moved above Ukraine, who previously beat Bosnia and Herzegovina 4-1, into second in the section after a narrow win. Their task was made all the more difficult by the 47th-minute dismissal of Robert Brady but they nevertheless prevailed through captain Conor Clifford's goal on the hour. Both sides had begun in defensive fashion with only Yevgen Pavlov going close to breaking the deadlock in the opening period, Gerard Henley saving his close-range header on the stroke of half-time. Just two minutes after the break Ireland were reduced to ten men when Brady was shown a second yellow card. However, McCaffrey's charges rallied and went in front 13 minutes later when Clifford converted from the penalty spot after a Ukraine handball inside the penalty area. England lead the section on six points ahead of Monday's final round of games. They will play Ukraine, who are on three points alongside Ireland, who face point-less Bosnia and Herzegovina. That is correct. Ukraine beat England in last year's final. Which means that England are European runners-up. [let's pretend it was your own personal bias that prevented you from expressing that fact). England : Ukraine is the big game. The criteria of the rules state that the Eng 1:0 Irl plus Eng 4: 0 BiH puts England beyond IRL. http:///www.uefa.com/MultimediaFiles/Download/Regulations/uefa/Others/84/44/03/844403_DOWNLOAD.pdf page 5 However wanting Irl to gain 6 points in an Elite Phase is pretty good. Keep waving those flags. Edited by telesales - 28 May 2010 at 8:10pm |
