Topic: All Ireland League article Posted: 19 Feb 2008 at 7:24am |
Good article in last edition of ybig, even though it was against all ireland leauge, some good points were made. However I still think an all Ireland league should happen, theres no guarantee that it will suddenly turn things around and we'll have thousands more through the turnstiles straight away, but a fully professional league with teams from north and south would defo generate an interest from sky who already cover irish league and setanta, that would mean more money in the game here, which should mean better players and better standard etc. It might not be an overnight success but over time i think it would be worth it.

would be amazed if it happens, as RM says both will want to keep their uefa cup spots but uefa themselves will not be for that..
Would be handy for harps(if there in the top flight), less travelling to do

Both the FAI and IFA have said they are against the idea due to European places---

Had a brain storm of a solution for this when watching the setanta cup last night. The All-Ireland league should use the same format as the MLS in the states. You could have a southern conference and a northern conference. All teams from both conferences play against each other. At the end of the season, the team who is top of the southern conference are crowned FAI league winners and qualify for the champions league, and the same in the northern conference. Then the top team in each conference would then progress to an All-Ireland final. Its a way of having an All-Ireland league while retaining both league titles and european places.!

Sounds alright Zizu but Uefa might see this as an opportunity to make one league out of ireland(therefore 1 champions league spot) and i dont think IFA will take that risk of your idea

Cracking idea Zizu, but I fear that tirchonaill is right - UEFA already has a lot of pressure on it with Yugoslavia / Serbia still splintering (I'm tipping Tetovo in FYR Macedonia to seek independence next), and another couple wanting to proclaim statehood and sign up a team - Euskadi most prominent. And a single Ireland leauge and team would make things a little bit easier for them, and completely unteneable for the current IFA.
