Topic: Best Irish Player of All Time Posted: 30 May 2007 at 5:41am |
Johnny Giles was presented with this trophy at half time during ( i think it was) the Brazil friendly a few years back.
Now I never saw the man play but my uncle whose opinion i trust says it was merited. So vote for your top three Irish players that you have seen play. They need to be Ireland internationals ( deffo not norn iron!)
1 Liam Brady
2 Paul Mcgrath
3 Roy Keane

In my 27 years on the the earth I'd say the same but in different order as McGrath and Keane were more my era than Chippy who was coming to the end of his career
1 McGrath
2 Keane
3 Brady, Only got to see Brady live once, in his testimoninal game at Lansdowne,
think it was against Iceland in 91 or thereabouts, crap game I remember
As a young kid sheedy was the jersey I wore though!

I'm nearly 41 lads and my first sighting of Gilesy was on Brady's debut against USSR in a 3-0 win at Dalyer (1974), what a fckn debut from Chippy. For me though there's only one McGrath.
1. McGrath
2. Giles
3. Keane
Brady was magnificent but the top 3 shade it for consistency in my opinion.

Giles defo has to be top 2. Easy to pick out the younger generation here, no offence freewheeler, 40 is still young, well young-ish

Theo, your point is well made (ta for the youngish endorsement), me Da was a huge fan of Noel Cantwell and Charlie Hurley and then there's Paddy Coad who was massively regarded by older fans, you could go on and on and it's always unfair I suppose to say so and so was the best, but in my 34 years going to Ireland games, McGrath is the best I ever saw. I can still hold me own in the sprints for the first 40 yards in training.

Yeah my mates Dad played for Shamrock Rovers in the 50's and 60's and reckons Paddy Coad and also Giles were by far the best. Coad was meant to have been a great talent for club and country
