Topic: Rugby......Ireland's Call Posted: 11 Feb 2008 at 8:43am |
I know this is a soccer forum for the most part, but thank God for "Whatever" section.
Ireland's Call has now become in my opinion an embarrassment to a civilised and supposedly grown up Sporting Nation. Hardly any of the players sing it cos it's dawned on them that a) It's crap and b) It's not representative of the people or nation of Ireland.
I was fckn cringeing on Saturday as the camera panned along the players who didn't know what to be doing with themselves and then to look into the crowd and see some of those fckn TWATS belting it out at the top of their voices in the name of Ireland. Eh I don't fackin think so. A rousing Le Marseillaise just put another nail in the Ireland's Call coffin and I felt angry and embarrassed.
It is time to put a stop to this half arsed attempt to placate those who don't wish to play under the flag or anthem of this country. Fckn stupid carry on it is.

Well said freewheeler, i couldnt agree more. Its an embarassment. Were fast turning into a nation with no pride and a lack of any patriotism. Dont watch rugby much but do they play amhran na bhfiann aswell as irelands call? As far as i remember they didnt in the world cup.

They play Amhrán na bhFiann AND Ireland's call at home, but only Ireland's call away from Dublin. FFS, a fckn medley of songs at home, it's just sad so it is. I'll never forgive them for picking "The Rose of Tralee" in the first ever World Cup in whatever year it was as our anthem back then. Fckn madness.

I kid you not Count, I don't forget stuff like that even if I forget the year (was it 87 in New Zealand? not that it fckn matters). Yeah, the fckn Rose of P*ssin Tralee, I stood there with me gob open in shock and disgust.

Agree song is brutal, but the rugby fans create more of an atmosphere in Croke Park then the soccer fans...

That's because the rugby team have been doing better than the soccer team the last 5 years. When the soccer team are playing well and to their ability; the rugby atmosphere wouldnt come close apart from when Ireland beat England at croker. Ireland's call is a sham and it's even more of a sham that they dont play it at away games. The more i hear about the Ulster fans and their ridiculous carry on at away games, the more it puts me off giving a sh1te about our rugby team

Oh, I do so dislike Rugby and the fixation the upper crusts of our society have with it. I used to play Rugby for the school (Sandymount High School) at Lansdowne Road but when they asked me to stick my head between two fella's asses I said I ahd enough and just left.
On the subject of national anthems. If Ireland can't play the IRISH national anthem at Irish games why do Norn Iron play God save the Queen at soccer games????
On the subject of a compromise so as not to offend sensitive souls who turn up at the Rugby why don't they play "All Kinds of everything remind me of you". And they could have Dana singing it and the players would look suitably embarrassed as they actually know it and can mouth the words.
HAS THE F-N WORLD TAKEN A TURN FOR THE SURREAL!!!

This is exactly why i NEVER want a 'united' Ireland football. Im sorry but if it was my choice Norther Ireland would have thier own rugby team which can play the agadoo as thier anthem if they so wish and the people of that part of the land can choose who they want to support.
Its a f**king disgrace for an Ireland team to line up to an English language anthem (IMO)

The G.A.A is the only truley working class sport left in the country. I can identify 100 times more with Alan Brogan than i can with Robbie Keane or Brian O'Driscoll. the D4 brigrade strut around thinking dey r better than us because they follow the egg chasing. I really believe that Irelands Call is as much for the upper class Dubs to say they have their own anthem as it is for the northerners. Although to be honest i didnt think we sang OUR national anthem particulary passionatly on Wednesday night.
