Bazunu's fault for me. Keepers responsibility to cover that side of the goal. Between that and the clearance that led to Xhaka's shot off the post, Caoimhin is moving ahead

shocking positioning there
Not much he could have done. Technically his positioning is correct.

The Swiss made their own wall adjacent to the Irish wall. If he was to go to the end of that wall he'd have been standing to the side of the goal. I'd blame the Irish defenders for allowing the Swiss to make that wall unchallenged. Throw someone in the middle of their wall to create a gap/eyeline for the keeper ffs
Agree but doesn't Gav influence/ direct the wall?
His walls primary job is to block the side to Bazunus left. They're in position. If they move they open up that side and Bazunu can't necessarily direct the Swiss wall can he?

It’s a terrible wall facing a left footer. Need to be 3 yards to the other side thus narrowing the target

Caoimhín probably concedes there too. It's a perfect free kick routine to the swiss' credit

His distribution has been genuinely woeful.

This was my main takeaway tonight rather than the goal, really a strength of his generally but poor tonight

CK looks a lot more comfortable on the ball and more accurate passing from what I can see. He moves ahead for me

My biggest worry is we probably can't score goals instead of two very good keepers and a third backup who is decent too

It was. Yet still more accurate than Kelleher vs Belgium.

Kelleher:

13/27 passes completed (48%)
3/16 long balls completed (18.7%)

Bazunu:

25/40 passes completed (63%)
3/18 long balls completed (16.6%)

I don't think our tactics helped either GK in that regard.

JOS was happy for us to mix it up and play more percentage football at times Hence more long balls and fairly poor stats.

Bazunu did make one poor error with the ball that fell to Xhaka.

That's not really more accurate - just Bazunu made more short passes.   Kelleher 10/11 and Bazunu 22/22 in short passes.   Kelleher 3/16 and Bazunu 3/18 in long passes.   The difference is marginal.

Just a tactical choice, which could easily be down to the manager.

What was stopping Kelleher from playing more short passes?

He was more accurate with his passing. That is a fact.

The manager maybe?   As, you know, I put in my post.

The way the opposition played could also impact on a keeper's decision to go short or long.

But ultimately both keepers were more or less equally accurate over short and long range passing.

Ultimately, one passed the ball more accurately than the other. A Rafa Benítez fact.

Both keepers were more than happy to boot it long. They both were poor at it. Bazunu still passed the ball more accurately overall with a higher volume of passes too.

Bazunu is used to playing short passes at Southampton.

I have no issue with lads wanting Kelleher to start games at the moment. He's the better overall GK at this moment in time.

But there's a weird narrative that he's better on the ball than Bazunu, which isn't true. I've disproved it multiple times over the past few months.

Distribution isn’t one of Bazunus issues. ball playing goal keepers will make those dodgy passes every now and then when they try and pass out. Kelleher did something similar the other night although not quite as bad.

Lots of talk about Kelleher needing to get out of Liverpool but Bazunu really needs to try and kick on from Southampton in the summer if they don’t go up.

A season down the Championship has been good for him to regain some confidence as last year really hurt his confidence. You’d like to see him get into a top level League this summer.

If Southampton's GK coaches aren't going to address his positioning in terms facing of long distance shots, he should hire his own personal one to work on it. It's his main weakness.

Lots of footballers work with personal trainers and specialists outside of club training now. I know a lot of Irish players work with Training121 coaches in Dublin. They put videos up on TikTok.

You’d hope it’s something he’s already trying to work on. It was a good free kick last night. Id be more critical of his lack of ability to organise the wall than not saving the shot.

Also Johnson jumped out the way of the free kick. He jumped out of numerous tackles against Belgium too.

Bazunu had "a higher volume of passes" because the ball came to him more often.   Do you think that's a reflection on his ability as a keeper?

Do you think if, say, Belgium closed down the short pass outlet better than Switzerland (forcing Kelleher to go long more often) that that reflects on the keeper too?

Your bottom line that Kelleher isn't necessarily being better on the ball than Bazunu is fine.   But that's no excuse to mis-use stats.
