FBD Connacht League: Horan off to winning start as Sligo are held

16 January 2011

James Horan's reign as Mayo manager got off to a winning start when his new-look side accounted for GMIT by 2-8 to 1-5 in the FBD Connacht League at a wet McHale Park last night.

In the first ever floodlit game at the Castlebar venue, second half goals from last year's minor star Cillian O'Connor, who top-scored with 1-6, and Mark Ronaldson ensured Mayo of the win.

An Eric Monaghan goal had given GMIT a 1-1 to 0-3 lead at half-time, but the home side came good in the second half and put the result beyond doubt when Ronaldson slotted home a late penalty following a foul on Aidan Campbell.

At Ballinode, the all-Sligo affair between IT Sligo and Sligo finished in a 1-9 to 0-12 draw.
Danny Cummins netted for the students in the first half, but Sligo held a slender 0-7 to 1-3 lead at the break.

Mark Breheny registered 0-7 from frees for Kevin Walsh's side, but points from Adrian Croal, Adrian Faherty and Eugene Keating ensured IT Sligo of a share of the spoils.

Great tally for young O'Connor, even if it was v GMIT. McHale Park looked class Clap

I think the GAA should make as many night time fixtures as possible. I think more people prefer them to Sunday games, especially those travelling. Good buzz, and good for local economies too. Would love to play Dublin in town under lights. WOuld be a good buzz around town

Great start for the Glensmen.

Beat St Marys handy enough in the McKenna Cup and the Hurlers have beaten Westmeath in the Walsh Cup.

Hurlers were without the Loughgiel Shamrocks players who are in the All - Ireland Semi Final next month against the winners of O'Loughlin Gaels (Kilkenny) and Oulart-The-Ballagh (Wexford) of Leinster.

Big year for both teams, Bradleys 3rd year in charge of the footballers - two consectutive league promotions and impressive enough championship performances. Goals will be to retain div 2 status and make a decent run though the qualifiers. Ulster semi / final isn't unrealistic.

Hurlers, with Dinny back in charge again of a young side, will hopefully try a bit harder in the league and get back to div 1. Excellent last year in championship - hopefully more of the same with a better run through Leinster.

What's the story with that, is it straight knockout and first round losers go into a shield yeah? Would make up a decent comp in fairness as there are a few colleges involved? DCU are fairly strong too I think!

Yup. A lot of the colleges and universities are fairly strong as they have first call on the inter county players AFAIK.

Yeah all the colleges get first choice, I think it's great as a load of players get a good opportunity at a high enough level that way.

Yeah and the 2-3000 will be all Offally supporters LOL

I know alot of those donegal lads and the noise they're making is that they do plan to take it alot easier on the beer this year, they seem to be taking it alot more serious.
remains to be seen though
