Amateurs can agree pre-contracts with firms, which they can collect when they turn professional. This rule change came into force in recent times allowing amateurs to recoup monies paid for their training, often in other countries. This article explains some of it. My nephew was at a golf school for two years. He entered an agreement which would have seen his parents recoup the costs. He's not turning pro so they won't get anything,

I would assume he had a deal in place, small, for amateur competitions, they wouldn't affect his status. I imagine he would have had a clause for exposure at major events.

I think Dunne already has sponsorship from Underarmour. It may have just been a one off because he was at the Open.
Would I be right in saying that amateurs can take money from sponsors but not competition prize money? |

It won't matter a jot. Should he win today, he would probably get the biggest ever endorsement seen just for turning pro. To put golf endosement loot into perspective. Woods made $50m last year without hitting a golfball and Rory Mac is on a 10 year deal with Nike worth $250m. I don't think he will win. There'll be such huge pressure on amateur shoulders today that it would be the most extraordinary achievement in the modern world of golf for him to triumph. Did anyone notice him collecting his own divots a couple of times yesterday? He is an amateur in the truest sense. Similar to Justin Rose in '98 in Birkdale, I hope he plays reasonably well today and can stay with the leaders. |

As much as I fumed about him yesterday I reckon Dustin Johnson can go very low today. Pressure is off him. He's had his bottler day and he can't get any worse.
Probably went home, snorted a few lines off his wifes stomach, rode her senseless and then went off to bed ready to rick n roll for today.
