Letter below from Indo............................
Sad to see Stan leaving top job
< =http://www.independent.ie/search/index.jsp method=post> >
There are not many people in Ireland today with a heavy heart following Stephen Staunton's sacking from the Irish team management position, to the contrary some of you are probably heading to the local to celebrate but I, for one, am very sad to see Stan go.
Now, I will have to admit at the outset that these feelings are as much to do with sentiment, as opposed to the performances of the team recently.
Nonetheless, I think the treatment he has received from the average Irish football fan and the sickening witch-hunt from the media has been atrocious.
The reason he is being lambasted by so many is more to do with his failings at being a 'personality', or his ability in an interview situation, rather than his footballing knowledge or experience. (Was one of the greatest managers in footballing history, Bob Paisley ever great value in an interview?)
When you hear non sporting people suggest that he "can't handle interviews" rather than analysing his footballing decisions you know something is not quite right.
Because he was in such a prominent position, you would expect his footballing decisions to be criticised, but the level of abuse and the disgraceful journalism are an absolute shame.
I know for sure that no manager in world football in charge of the Irish team would have overcome Germany and the Czech republic in our recent campaign.
The players were not good enough and some of our better ones were out of form or long term injured.
I know I am fighting a losing battle here, judging by the general consensus of the Irish public, but I have enormous respect for the man that is Stephen Staunton.
Hopefully, the next manager will wear colourful shirts, crack jokes with the media and is able to talk a good game. That should keep everyone happy.

nobody has a problem with stan as a man,we all recognise his service as a player to the country and credit him for it, BUT as a manager he was Sh1t,you only have to look at his records, he didnt get the boot cause of his interviews,he got the boot because of his results, end of story Wayne Kierans whoever the f*ck u r.

The thing is we could have naviagted this group!
If we'd have claimed 6 points against cyprus, and those 2 dropped away points against slovakia we would be level on points with czech republic and germany albeit having played once more than both teams. I also feel that Stan will have been dissapointed not to have taken 3 points at home against both higher ranked teams because we were the better team on both occasions!

What planet is this guy on? The reason Stan took so much flak was almost exclusively down to his managerial and tactical 'skills'. The dog in the street could have picked the team in every game. Stan puts maybe the most consistant right back in the premiership at left back, gives andy keogh 2 starts on the wing, lets Reid and Hunt rot on the bench and brings on Johnathan bleedin' Douglas in a must win game.
All well documented that maybe but the so called witch hunt was nothing to do with the guys personality.

This man clearly hasn't got a clue what he's talking about. Stan's record as manager is the worst of any manager since we became a 'professional' association. (since we didn't rely on picking teams from the Irish league). I wish he'd log on to this forum whoever wrote that letter.
