Probably the most recongnisable song from the most famous band from Limerick. And Limerick is home to Thomond Park. Plus it’s very singable. People love to sing when in crowds. Add in a bit of local connection and it’s all the better.

Not sure if it was mentioned here but it's been said the Stade de France play that song regularly after French sporting events so it made sense they'd play it. It's very popular in places like south Korea and Japan also. Probably a worldwide thing.

The European Ryder Cup fans have adapted old songs to create chants for the players. Zombie was a good fit with Rory. Rose has Gold as his. |

It's an interesting choice of theme song for a man whose Great Uncle was killed by a loyalist death squad.

McIlroy has always been a strange one in that respect - a Catholic unionist. Likely assimilated by the overwhelming majority of unionists in that part of the north, similar to a lot of descendants of unionists who found themselves in the free state after partition who would be nationalists today.

Why? Your family and history shapes you but doesn't necessarily define you.

Given the flag he was waving at the end, i don't think the song Zombie would have offended him is my point

Stockholm Syndrome. You assimilate to the area you grow up in. Sam Maguire was a protestant as was Wolfe Tone etc.. Padraig Pearse was born Patrick Pearce son of an Englishman. Religion does not equal politics. On a side note I was at an EIRE international last year and there was a Unionist Orange Band with a giant Edward Carson banner playing directly opposite the Schoolhouse pub. There'd be a load of unionists in Donegal/Monaghan etc.. as well. I would say most assimilate but some staunch people of both persuasions will not. I can't see working class protestants ever assimilating into a United Ireland and will be big trouble makers.
