Rubiales quits on the Piers Morgan show, of all places.

She's been admitted to hospital. Maybe the doctors will make her see sense.

Rubiales is still holding on!
In the meantime, Linda Caicedo's goal against Germany was voted as the best of the tournament.

Same in any field. Those at the top have had to hand their soul in at some point. There are lost of great books on this topic, particularly in the political arena. But one of the best books on this subject in the sporting arena, is one of our very own. Champagne Football. Just mindboggling.

Rubiales' mother is reportedly on hunger strike, and the RFEF supposedly wants to be suspended by UEFA - due to Spanish government interference. Spanish clubs would be excluded from European competition if that happened.
There must be some house of cards ready to fall if the Spanish football authorities are so set on keeping Rubiales against all logic or reason. |

What world do football ‘suits’ actually occupy? They seem to have an almost disconnected view of their own importance and relevance to the actual football. Apart from the ludicrous world of MMA and the chumps around it, football suffers massively from the administrators vastly over-estimating their role and relevance. There also seems to be a culture of unaccountability.

He's going down in flames that lad. Probably thought he could ride it out but it's gone way beyond that possibility at this point.

Rubiales now faces a mass boycott of Spanish players, and FIFA has also intervened to suspend him from all football related matters for at least ninety days.

FIFA have updated their archive to include every game from this World Cup. The archive includes all the Women's World Cups going back to 1991 (and also has full games for the men's competition going back to 1966.)

Blazers are a special kind of prat, but Rubiales makes Delaney look almost benign in comparison. At least you could laugh at JD's attempts to ingratiate himself with fans.
For the Spanish players though, they've had to put up with a whole different level of arseholery.

BBC were reporting that Carmona’s father died on Friday but the family chose not to tell her until after.

Spanish Football President getting himself in trouble for kissing one of the players on the lips after the game. Sound like something JD might have done.

Sad news about the scorer or the winning goal in the final, Carmona, she learnt after the game that her dad has died.

It was an open first half with both side having chances. I think England had the right strategy, but the through passes to Russo weren't accurate enough.
The subs at half-time didn't make much sense to me. Does losing 1-0 really require such changes. It seemed like panic set in and England lost a lot of composure in the second half. Spain's two problems in this World Cup were profligacy in front of goal and getting caught out at the back, but England never really tested their defence in the second half, and the missed chances didn't matter in the end. Although Bonmatí and Caldentey were excellent, I think Hermoso was Spain's best player this tournament. A class player always at the centre of the action. Australia missed out on 3rd, and it's funny that while they adapted to having Kerr out injured, they didn't to Kennedy's absence. And for us... Ireland had an okay tournament. Seeding did not help us (or a few others). For example, Vietnam were ranked 32 for this competition, but they should have been 132. The draw for the tournament was held before every team had even qualified, so not a lot made sense in that department. In terms of peformance on the pitch, it was the second half against Canada that cost the team any chance of progression. After an excellent first half, the team spent the rest of the game running around like headless chickens. The gameplan just became so incoherent. In a bizarre parallel, the women's team shared some of the same problems the men's team has. Conceded goals and chances directly after half time in all three games. And the move that resulted in the concession of the penalty against Australia was almost identical to the second goal scored by Canada. A cross from the right into our box worked time after time against us. Only for some excellent saves from Brosnan, we would have conceded the same goal mulitiple times! Looking into the future, things do seem bright. There's some good young players there, along with the experienced heads, and it's now up to what happens with a new manager. |
