Nine players receive their first U21s call up for the training camp. Surprised at a couple like Conor Carty and Darragh Burns being brought back in.

Carty's inclusion is certainly a surprise, Burns not so much given he was in squads during the last campaign. Nice to see Dylan Duffy get a call up following his move and impressive late season form for Lincoln. Killian Cahill a first time call up too? Abankwah, Curtis (again highlighting our lack of options at RB), McJannet, Vata and Vaughan all call ups from U19/17. Henry-Francis too? Good looking squad, Cannon is really the only notable omission, I guess Odubeko too given that he played games at this level in the last campaign, but he may be injured? |

Pretty young squad, but plenty of talent. With Ebosele and Cannon out, there are only 8 2002 born players out of 26 with 6 born in 2004 or later.
Asides from Cannon and Ebosele, Corcoran, Healy, Leavy, Hayes and Jay McGrath are the others to miss out having previously been selected in the squad for the Iceland game.
2005 - Curtis, Vata 2004 - Vaughan, McJannet, Abankwah. Grehan 2003 - Cahill, Adaramola, O'Riordan, Henry-Francis, Moran, Roughan, Armstrong, Kenny, Lawal, Keeley, Garcia-McNulty, O'Neill 2002 - Duffy, Hodge, Burns, Brooks, Furlong, Carty, Phillips, Okoflex |

Just throwing this up here for posterity:
Interesting to see Lawal listed as a midfielder when he lined out in Cork alongside McNulty at CH. Assuming Hodge and Phillips are the centre pair, you are then looking at backups in the form of McJannett and Henry-Frances, so maybe Lawal is in there as more experienced cover for the main two? Up front, with Cannon MIA, I'd be looking at Kenny centre with Moran right to start (Festy in that right berth when fit with Moran as the #10...maybe Burns instead of Festy for now?). I liked the look of Vaughan when he played on the left for Hull, so would have him ahead of O'Neill. Armstrong a capable backup for Kenny.
But we should see everyone given a good go over the three matches and come out with a solid best 11. Hope they are televised... Edited by Fozz - 07 Jun 2023 at 1:53pm |

Lawal was also listed as a midfielder for March's game.

I think a lot depends on the formations used. Moran and Vaughan are both at their best as 10's imo, you could play both in a box midfield, Vaughan is busy, but he lacks the pace to play wide imo. If we go with just one 10, then Vaughan will be an able deputy at worst for Moran, he really is a tidy combative busy little player. For me, with Cannon out, I'd look to Sinclair Armstrong first, maybe to accompany Kenny if it's a front two, or he can also play as a wide attacker in a 3. I dont think Kenny is ahead of Armstrong by any means. At the back, I'd say he'll stick with the Lawal/Mc Nulty partnership at least initially, regardless of where Lawal was named on the squad sheet - there are 4 CMs named as you have pointed out and only 3 specialist Centre Backs in Mc Nulty, Grehan and O'Riordan, although both Abankwah and Roughan can do a job there also. We do have the option to play 3 at the back also with Curtis/Ebosele at RWB and Furlong/Adaramola at LWB. A 5-4-1 with a box midfield might look something like this and would roughly mirror how the senior side set up vs France: Brooks Lawal McNulty Roughan Curtis (Ebosele) Furlong Phillips Hodge Moran Vaughan Armstrong (Cannon) The problem with that is it doesnt utilise wide attacking players, of which we have a lot at this age group Duffy, Okoflex, Costelloe, Burns, O'Neill, Vata, Hayes, Springett, even Ebosele and Armstrong are all decent wide attacking options, so he'll likely stick with a 4-2-3-1 for now. It's a very good squad that could easily qualify if Cannon and Hodge dont either defect or get promoted to the seniors (Moran and Ebosele are candidates for promotion too) over the course of the campaign. Ollie O'Neill to return to Fulham after his loan spell at Derry City ends, 1 goal and i assist in 18, disappointing enough stint tbh. Just shows how average the standard in PL2 is, given Ollie scored 7 and assisted 6 in 12 PL2 games prior to joining Derry.

It's Ollie's first foray into men's football so too early to say what his ceiling is but I guess you cold argue he got some valuable experience anyway. The upcoming U21 campaign willl reveal more as to his place in the pecking order and what qualities he has.
He would seem to be in competition with the likes of Moran, Okoflex, Ebosele, Burns and even the likes of Vata for a wide-attacking role, and while he has the experience from the previous campaign, I don't see him standing out above the lads listed there. |

That's fair I think. Just a little disappointed with his loan spell, as I thought he looked the real deal as a youngster during the last campaign. Hopefully he gets himself a decent loan, maybe L1 level ahead of the new season to build on the experience gained at Derry.

Given Crawford's stated preference for players playing first team football it always seemed a bit of an anomaly that O'Neill was regularly called up in the last campaign, before he went to Derry. Especially as he was underage for this campaign and he wasn't getting a sniff at Fulham. To be fair to him he chipped in with a few important moments in the qualifiers but the Derry loan makes it look like there's nothing major there to make him stand out from the many other attacking midfield options we seem to have at this age group.

Aidomo Emakhu and Dara Costello called up to replace Johnny Kenny (injury) and Rocco Vata (family reasons). Pity about the two lads missing as Kenny made an impact in March and Vata has impressed me most amongst the 2005 attackers.

On the subject of defections, can anything be read into Vata not showing up? Says family reasons so hope all is ok that way

His Da is having a mini feud with the head of Albanian football and released a few statements recently which were very criticising of Albanian football. Seen a few things were Albanian fan pages were pointing out about his ma liking comments about how he'll never represent Albania. So in conclusion, its pie in the sky stuff but he's going to switch to Albania/Scotland.

Think that feud with Rudi and the Albanian FA goes back years His mother is fairly active on Twitter, and always posts his call ups, but not this time, It states family reasons in the FAI statement, and in fairness I think this is the first squad he’s withdrawn from, probably just paranoia with me given events elsewhere Edited by Howdo - 11 Jun 2023 at 8:38am |

No, sounds like a personal matter and no point speculating but hope all turns out well. Vata is a 2005 so likely well down the pecking order for this squad but he looks a clever player and hopefully he gets some gametime in the campaign to set him up for the one after. |

Friendly vs Gabon now off as Gabon decided they didn't want to show up for it.
