Got a taxi from Koblenz to Hahn after our 1-1 in Gelsenkirchen. Cost €110 back then.

Are you sure it was Hahn, it never had a train station til now LOL It's an ex airbase devoid of anything around bar a couple of small towns. As I say the Koblenz line is about 20 miles away on the Mosel and while it's a scenic area, it would be a royal pain to get there from Cologne and then still needing to find a way to the airport, where you'd need a taxi company's number or your fooked unless a local drives you. Living locally in the area and no way would I ever consider going from Cologne down to Hahn except with a car and even then there are better airports nearby Cologne.

Thessalonika through Luton on Thursday and will get bus (think train likely to be out of action) early on game day. Back from Athens to Cologne, and then train to Frankfurt Hahn. Should make a grand total saving of about €7 on flights, and likely come out much dearer with other transportEmbarrassed...but first time in a while heading alone and quite enjoy the travel.

eh Beavis, are you sure you don't mean Frankfurt am Main LOL

There is no train anywhere near FF Hahn airport. Well you have the Trier Koblenz line about 20 miles away at Traben-Trarbach but that's some serious dog-legging with local trains, and you'd still need to book a taxi if you can find one there. From Cologne by train is three and a half hours via Koblenz with two changes if you go that way, and then that's if you don't have delays with the trains. Also the Cologne Trier line is banjaxed due to the flood so you can't even shorten the route by going that way.

You can catch a bus from Frankfurt to Hahn but it's a fair distance, 2 hours driving in a car, so slower again with a bus. You should take a look at something like Bla Bla car if you can get somebody to drive you from Cologne to Hahn airport, otherwise its not worth the hassle.

There used to be a direct bus from Cologne to Hahn airport but it must have been cancelled at some stage. There's a bus direct from Koblenz to Hahn now though, taking about an hour and a half.

What areas are people booking accom in?

Booked in a place called Athens studios near the acropolis museum. Sports bar next door and looks alright. Flying in through Vienna and back through Brussels, reasonable prices.

When would we expect the away ticket portal to open?

Staying near Omonia metro station in the middle of the city.

Booked early enough so got a hotel with a pool (it'll be needed for the heat) for a reasonable price.

As for away portal, I'd guess early May probably

Interrailed twice and this was the worst area I've stayed in. Like a far more dodgy Talbot/Oconnell Street at night. People openly shooting up heroin on the streets, prostitutes everywhere and all sorts of unsavoury characters. This was circa 2010. Passed the area on a bus tour 4 years ago and it looked a lot cleaner and more civilised to be fair.

Looks like it's cleaned itself up a bit, a few upmarket hotels around the square.

Staying to the south of it near the Central Athens "Varvakios" Markets , about a 5 minute walk from the Metro

Reviews of the hotel and those nearby it, majority reference the location as a positive
