.NOVEMBER 1989: MALTA – REPUBLIC OF IRELAND 0-2
FIFA WORLD CUP (ITALIA 90)
GROUP SIX – QUALIFICATION MATCH

THE PICTURE

Team captains John Buttigieg and Ronnie Whelan exchange banners before the international match at Ta’ Qali. The match was played early in the afternoon as in the evening there was a full programme of World Cup qualifiers plus the friendly England vs Italy at Wembley screened live on TV. So the crowd attendance would have suffered.

John Buttigieg, who at the time was playing in the UK with Brentford, was substituting Ray Vella ‘Mundu’ as team captain in view that Vella was missing through a one-match suspension.

As for Ronnie Whelan he was captain of his country for the first time.  For the occasion, among the 6000 Irish supporters there was also his proud father, Ronnie Whelan senior, who had played football in the 50s, 60s and 70s with St. Patrick's and Drogheda.

The match officials from left to right are linesman Johannes Reijgwart, referee Jacob Uilenberg who was taking charge of his first ever qualification match, linesman Ignatius Van Swieten who passed away in May 2005 and substitute linesman Joe Cassar.

This was one of the last matches for linesman Ignatius Van Swieten as some months later, early in 1990, he was assaulted in his home whereby his assailant hit him repeatedly with a hammer on his head. Although he recovered from the ordeal he wasn’t able to referee anymore.

The nightmare turned worse for van Swieten, who was openly gay, as his assailant told the police that the referee had tried to sexually harass him. Sadly van Swieten was arrested, tried and convicted, only for his assailant to have a change of heart and confess that he made up the story and he did it to steal some money.

-------

Match Notes….

- During the Press Conference held on 9th November 1989, MFA President Dr George Abela announced that the MFA was renewing the contract of national team coach Horst Heese for a further period of two years.

- During the same Press Conference Dr George Abela denied some media reports that the Irish Broadcasting authorities were paying Lm45,000 to the MFA for Radio and TV transmissions. He said that although negotiations were still on-going, these were nowhere near that amount of money.

- Entrance tickets were priced at Lm2 at the North Side and East (Valletta) Side, Lm 5 at the unnumbered West (Ħamrun) Side A whereas children under 12 years paid paid Lm2. Enclosure Reserved Seats were priced at Lm 12. The circa 6,000 Irish supporters were seated at the South Side behind the goalposts and the numbered seats at the West Side B of the Enclosure.

- Tickets were on sale from Ġilardu Kiosk in Valletta, Eros Stationary in Paceville and from the Souvenir Shop at the Ta’ Qali Stadium Office. Tickets were also on sale from the Stadium gates on the day of the match from 11.00 a.m onwards. The Stadium gates opened at noon.

- In preparation for this last group match qualifier, Malta played three friendly matches, all in the month of October, losing both home matches against Austria (1-2) and East Germany (0-4) and in between earning a goalless draw in Cyprus. Oddly enough, although Heese was aware that his captain Ray Vella would be missing this Republic of Ireland match through suspension, he still included the player in all three friendlies.

- The Irish contingent, comprising also the Irish Under 18 side who were playing against the Malta Under 18 at Corradino, arrived in Malta on Monday 13th November at 15:35 after a one hour delay. The Irish received a roaring welcome at the Airport from thousands of Irish fans who were already in Malta and who for the occasion wore vests with the words ‘The team that Jack Built’ with reference to their Team Manager Jack Charlton.

- The Irish Senior squad players and officials were staying at the Hilton Hotel whereas the Under 18 side was accommodated at the Corinthia Palace Hotel. At 5.00 p.m. of that same day the Irish did the first training session at the Ta’ Qali Training Grounds.

- The Maltese players were staying at the Selmun Palace Hotel as from Sunday 12th November.  John Buttigieg, who was playing in the UK with Brentford joined the squad on Sunday whereas Carmel Busuttil, who was playing with KRC Genk in Belgium, joined the squad a day later.

- Being on the brink of qualifying for the 1990 World Cup, about six thousand Irish fans made the trip to Malta. This was the highest number ever of foreign fans to visit Malta for an international match, the previous being the match against Sweden in November 1973 when about 3,000 were present.

- Some of the Irish had gone through an ordeal just to get to the ground on time, as they had been held up in the Dublin airport by a solid bout of fog. It wasn't until about 50 minutes from kick-off that the last group of Irish fans arrived in Malta.

- By way of this victory, the Republic of Ireland qualified for the Italia ’90 World Cup final tournament. It was their first ever qualification for a World Cup tournament. Actually Ireland still needed Spain to defeat Hungary to secure their World Cup spot. The Spaniards did not disappoint as they doled out a 4-0 hammering in a match which kicked off at the same time.

- Ireland had Mick McCarthy missing through an injury. He was replaced by evergreen David O'Leary. Moreover, during the match the Irish lost influential centre half Kevin Moran to an injury which he had picked up during a challenge in the Maltese box, coming off some ten minutes after the knock. Moran had just been voted 'Irish Player of the Year',

- As for injuries, the Maltese had Edwin Camilleri missing whereas Jesmond Zerafa was in doubt but recovered on time and made the first team.

- John Aldridge obtained both Irish goals despite the odd fact that he had scored one solitary goal for Ireland in his previous 27 appearances. He almost got his first international hat-trick in the dying minutes, but Degiorgio placed on the goal line outstretched his foot and stopped his header.

- The Irish received a £30,000 bonus each for obtaining qualification for the World Cup Final tournament whereas the Manager Jack Charlton received £100,000. The Maltese were on a bonus of Lm600 each only in case of a victory.

- Besides the senior and under 18 football matches between Malta and the Republic of Ireland there was a third encounter between the two countries as local journalists played against the Irish journalists at the Independence Arena. The Irish won this match 3-2. The local journalists’ goals came from Stephen Borg and Stefan Sultana – few years later a Maltese national football player himself.

I think I read in this thread previously that there's a bus from St Julians. Taxis probably just as cheap with a group though

Return them to ticket office. Only fair that you don't get the credit on your account for them
