As far as I know, and correct me if I am wrong here...

It all started with Henry VIII making a country from England & Wales.
Greater (shortened to "Great" but short for bigger, not better) Britain adds on Scotland to above.
NI is in neither - it is part of the United Kingdom (or Queendom, as it was for most of our lives but nobody cared).
