10/4/23

Championship

Sam Szmodics - Blackburn 5

Drifted all over the place and tried to make things happen. Had a few efforts on goal but they were saved by Vaclik. Booked.

Kevin Long - Birmingham 6

Won the majority of his ground and aerial duels. Competed well with what Stoke had in attack, with the likes of Smallbone, Campbell, Gayle and Powell all capable of causing problems at this level.

Jack Bonham - Stoke 6

Gathered a Long header comfortably in the second half and judged the basics fine until some panicked moments in the closing stages.

Will Smallbone - Stoke 6

Took up some good positions with clever runs. Final ball didn’t always match.

Mark McGuinness - Cardiff 7 (Star Man)

The best of the bunch at the back. Headed everything, put in some good tackles and positionally very good against a strong forward line. Blocked a number of shots and crosses, too.

Luke McNally - Coventry 6.5

Exposed by having to mark two men as Watford countered for their first goal but defended aggressively and on the front foot for the most part. Blocked Louza’s shot but the ball fell back to the Watford player who slotted inside the far post from the edge of the box to double the lead.

Sean McLoughlin - Hull 9

Under lots of pressure, had to head and kick an awful lot of balls away. Terrific in the heart of the defence.

Andy Lyons - Blackpool 7

In for Jordan Gabriel and headed Blackpool in front with his fourth goal since signing in January. Could have had a second too.

CJ Hamilton - Blackpool 6

Pace down the left caused problems for Luton’s backline, but lacked a cutting edge in the final third.

Andrew Omobamidele - Norwich 8

An admirable return to the line-up after an extended absence. His conduct during that absence, according to David Wagner, is what earned him the armband for this fixture, and it's easy to see why the German felt his charge possessed the necessary qualities.

Looked every bit the leader needed in Grant Hanley's leave, which may be vital given the extended spell the Scot's set for on the sidelines. Brought the ball out well, battled with aggressive former team-mate Jordan Hugill and swept up well when the Millers chipped over the defensive line.

Adam Idah - Norwich 5

Struggled to make any real impact on the game in another laboured performance. Teed up by Christos Tzolis late on but controlled poorly and couldn't get a shot away.

Tom Cannon - Preston 7

Six in six now for Tom Cannon as he's showing he's more than good enough for Championship level. He will be thinking what might have been after missing a few chances in the game but his head didn't drop and he opened the scoring.

Troy Parrott - Preston 7

Parrott is a real grafter and that will be appreciated by his teammates. Doesn't offer much of a goal threat but the ball doesn't seem to be landing his way. An admirable shift nonetheless.

Robbie Brady - Preston 7

Looked like a player determined to leave his mark on the game when he came on and he did just that. Immediately looked to beat players and deliver to the box and his deep corner for the head of Hughes led to the winning goal.

Jeff Hendrick - Reading 4

Another game in which the play seemed to pass him by. Couldn't impact the game at all and when he did get on the ball he didn't always retain possession. Had a decent effort late on which was turned around the corner.

Jimmy Dunne - QPR 6

Employed as right-back and did have some difficulties early in the game. Much better second half.

Ryan Manning - Swansea 8

Made plenty of defensive interventions and was so productive on the ball, as evidenced by his role in Swansea's second goal. Linked up so nicely with Jamie Paterson. Plenty of tackles and interceptions too to make life easier at the back.

Max O'Leary - Bristol City 7

An early let-off when he misjudged a header back across goal. Apart from that, solid throughout when called upon. Had no chance with Aaron Ramsey's header or the equalising goal. Distribution was impressive. Made a really good save late on to salvage a point.

Josh Cullen - Burnley 7.5

Solid distribution of the ball throughout the encounter as midfielder kept Clarets ticking over nicely.

John Egan - Sheffield United 4

Booked in the first half which meant he was unable to commit and found Barnes hard to handle. Could not get enough on his headed clearance for the second.

League 1

Marcus Harness - Ipswich 5

In from the start in place of Broadhead and had by far Ipswich’s best chance of the first half - but couldn’t hit the target after being slipped through by clever work from George Hirst and Chaplin. Town looked to get him into the game but the neat interplay which characterises this side just didn’t click, with loose touches and balls bouncing the wrong way. Replaced at the break.

Eiran Cashin - Derby 6.5

Did what was asked of him and took few risks. Brought out the crossfield pass that he loves to unleash on a couple of occasions too.

Jason Knight - Derby 7

Buzzed around midfield and never gave the visitors much peace. The pass that created a chance for MK Dons was an absolute peach in the first half.

Conor Hourihane - Derby 6.5

Some of his set-piece deliveries were bang on the money and it was from his corner that Derby opened the scoring. Looked really hungry in terms of his effort off the ball.

David McGoldrick - Derby 6

Grabbed his 21st goal of the season and won't score many easier. Got robbed a couple of times when in midfield, but flashed a shot wide after the break.

James Collins - Derby 6

Popped up on the right wing, then the left, worked hard down the middle and just seemed to be everywhere. Hit the post and should have scored. Will be kicking himself that he didn't.

Conor Grant - MK Dons 6

Came on at the break and helped Dons get more of a foothold.

Jack Taylor - Peterborough 7.5

He's still running hard when others have stopped. Not at his imperious best in this game, but enough good moments to win the sponsors' man of the match award.

Tyreik Wright - Plymouth 5

After previously playing games in a 'number 10' role and at left wing-back, Wright started this match up front with Ryan Hardie. Was lively early on and looked like he would cause Lincoln plenty of trouble but could not sustain that threat.

Finn Azaz - Plymouth 5

His first touch of the ball as a 61st minute substitute saw his cross into the Lincoln box headed wide by Ben Waine. The Pilgrims need him to rediscover the form he showed earlier in the season.

3/4/23

Premier League

Seamus Coleman - Everton 7

Had to make some crucial interceptions and was a willing outlet going forward for the first 60 minutes before having to dig deep after the sending off.

4/4/23

Premier League

Evan Ferguson - Brighton 8

What a finish for his opener. Instinctive and clever backheel. Four Premier League goals now for 18-year-old and eight in all competitions. Missed a fine chance in the second half when he blazed over from 10 yards.

7/4/23

Championship

Sam Szmodics - Blackburn 6

Tried to create overloads in wide areas but couldn't make anything happen. Works hard but that final spark is missing again.

CJ Hamilton - Blackpool 6

Denied by the keeper’s legs with a shot on his weaker right foot before Josh Bowler tapped home Blackpool’s goal.

Mark McGuinness - Cardiff 7

Was stretched by Morgan Rogers a little early on in the game but was solid enough. Good in the air and on the ground.

Jimmy Dunne - QPR 5

Shaky throughout and both Dunne and Balogun were at fault for the second goal when they failed to deal with a routine ball over the top. Farcical defending.

Alan Browne - Preston 7

Played well before being forced off just before half time. A worrying knock for him, with the captain hobbling off the field. Had brought intensity and energy to PNE's performance and hit the post with a curled shot from inside the box.

Robbie Brady - Preston 8

Backed to start and didn't let his manager down. A steady first half performance and then delivered the inviting cross for Cannon to convert. Put a real shift in and used the ball well.

Troy Parrott - Preston 6

Ran himself into the ground, always on the move across the front line. Carried the fight to QPR's defenders and tracked back brilliantly towards the end, to stop a QPR break from resulting in a goal. Saw two good chances go begging first half.

Tom Cannon - Preston 9 (Star Man)

His goals ultimately won the game for Preston and that composure and class in the final third is gold dust. His header was emphatic and the second as clinical as it gets. To produce those two moments after a quiet first half, shows the confidence and focus in him.

Jeff Hendrick - Reading 5

A passenger in the midfield who really had very little impact on the game. Overrun in the first half and while he improved somewhat in the second, he gave the side very little to work with.

Kevin Long - Birmingham 7.5

Covered behind Roberts to make an important tackle near the bye-line in the opening 45. Seemed to be in the right position for almost the whole game. A composed and unfussy display.

Scott Hogan - Birmingham 5

Didn't have much impact.

John Egan - Sheffield United 6

Comfortable afternoon for the Republic of Ireland international for most parts. Marshalled his defenders well and dealt with the threat of Ashley Fletcher, who was replaced on the hour mark. Only slight blot on his copybook was a mis-cued clearance that put his side under pressure and led to the cross for Aasgaard to head goalwards but was grateful to Foderingham for his finger-tip save.

Jack Bonham - Stoke 6

Out quickly to put pressure on Wells in one-on-one. Beaten by a looping header for equaliser.

Will Smallbone - Stoke 6

Helped Stoke dominate the opening stages but couldn’t maintain his influence through the afternoon.

Max O'Leary - Bristol City 7

Had no chance with the opening goal but made an important save close to half-time to deny Campbell's header. Made another decent stop from Laurent at the near post.

Ryan Manning - Swansea 7

Put in a fine cross for Darling early on and linked up well with Liam Walsh. Very lucky to get away with a loose pass that was intercepted by Hamer though. The most likely to create something at times, as his cross for Liam Walsh at the start of the second half proved.

Luke McNally - Coventry 7

Make a welcome return to form on a day when he had his work cut out trying to keep tabs on wide forward Liam Cullen and more than played his part in the clean sheet.

Sean McLoughlin - Hull 6

A tough, tough night. Didn't play all that badly despite the goals against. Had to withstand a fair amount of balls into his box.

Darragh Lenihan - Middlesbrough 5

Off night for the usually-commanding defender. Barnes gave him a contest and he had a couple of lapse moments in and out of possession.

Josh Cullen - Burnley 8.5 (Star Man)

Tremendous. Executes every part of his game excellently and effortlessly. Recovered the ball on countless occasions when Boro threatened to break, continuously taking it upon himself to do the dirty work, which allowed Josh Brownhill and Johann Berg Gudmundsson a little more freedom and flexibility in their roles, while his quality on the ball allowed the visitors to assert some control. Unfortunate to concede a penalty, as replays showed.

Michael Obafemi - Burnley 5

Replaced Tella before full-time. Booked for kicking ball away.

League 1

Eiran Cashin - Derby 6.5

It was his superb crossfield pass that played such a crucial role in the opener. Kept his composure and will have enjoyed a much-needed clean sheet

Jason Knight - Derby 6.5

Did a lot of chasing and buzzed around midfield in an attempt to close Rovers down. Covered a lot of ground and showed good energy levels.

Conor Hourihane - Derby 6

Dropped in between the centre-backs at times in a bid to get Derby moving in the first half but then popped up in the final third where he had a shot blocked.

David McGoldrick - Derby 7.5

The pass to set up Collins for a chance in the first half was levels above League One and showed some delightful touches across the 90 minutes. Got the goal his performance deserved.

James Collins - Derby 7.5

Had an electric start which saw him win and score the penalty that gave Derby the lead with barely a minute gone. Put his bundle in both offensively and defensively. Led from the front.

Marcus Harness - Ipswich 6

Looked to get involved without making a major impact.

Paudie O’Connor - Lincoln 7

Consistent as ever from the Irishman as he played his part in another clean sheet for the Imps.

Danny Mandroiu - Lincoln 7

Showed some very clever touches, and worked extremely hard up front to win the ball back.

Olamide Shodipo - Lincoln 7.5

Fantastic when he came on. Was a shame to lose Bishop, but Shodipo filled his shoes more than adequately. A constant threat down the left, and he had a couple of great runs on the ball.

Conor Grant - MK Dons 5.5

Starved of the ball in the first-half, his main contribution was an air-shot from the edge of the box. Withdrawn for Holland early in the second-half.

Joe Rafferty - Portsmouth 6

Hands full with Eisa and had to rein in his attacking tendencies as Pompey defended deeper and deeper.

Sean Raggett - Portsmouth 9 (Star Man)

Wand of a right foot! Opened up MK with a lovely assist for Ogilvie’s goal. Should have done better with a header, but was an absolute colossus as he stood firm in the face of MK Dons’ second-half onslaught.

Tyreik Wright - Plymouth 6

A surprising choice to play in the 'number 10' position behind the two strikers in Argyle's 3-4-1-2 formation as he made his first appearance since the 0-0 draw with Fleetwood Town at Home Park on February 18. Did not create too much for the Pilgrims and later moved to left wing back after Mickel Miller was taken off as the visitors chased a second goal.

Jack Taylor - Peterborough 8

Struck the post early on with a fine drive and scored in the final stages after a well-timed run into the penalty area. In between he was classy, often taking the ball under pressure from an opponent, but rarely losing it.

8/4/23

Premier League

Seamus Coleman - Everton 5

His individual mistake gifted United their second goal as he failed to control a Lisandro Martinez long ball which slipped under his foot and enabled Rashford to square to Martial which was cruel after he had carved out an enticing opportunity for Simms when the game was still goalless and had largely dealt well with the pacy Sancho.

Evan Ferguson - Brighton 6

Added a physical presence up front but his job was made harder by Spurs sitting back and getting men behind the ball to cut off his options.

Gavin Bazunu - Southampton 4

Palmed away an early effort from Jack Grealish but could do little to stop Haaland's powerful header from the six-yard line. Did well to stop Grealish's initial effort for the second goal but put it straight back to the England international to follow-up. The second time he's conceded four against City this season.

Scottish Premiership

Liam Scales - Aberdeen 7

The Irishman looks comfortable in Robson's preferred three man back line, and went about his business very well.

Jonny Hayes - Aberdeen 6

Plenty of industry but the veteran could have made more of some opportunities when he found himself in dangerous situations.

Bazunu is turning it around. Same thing happened after a wobbly start at Rochdale. He had the benefit of the doubt due to his age. Which he still has in a PL context. But if he can do well this year and Southampton go down then maybe someone recognises he can do it at this level. Otherwise a season below is no harm.

31/3/23

Championship

Josh Cullen - Burnley 7.5

Republic of Ireland international very good on the ball in the middle of the park. Booked after break but looked a harsh yellow card.

Michael Obafami - Burnley 6

Came on for Barnes. Showed good energy from the bench.

1/4/23

Championship

Alan Browne - Preston 9

Absolutely everywhere. The PNE captain set the tone in the opening exchanges and ran himself into the ground on derby day. Moved the ball well throughout and won his tackles.

Tom Cannon - Preston 8

Busy throughout the game and chased every lost cause. Dropped in to link play when the chance to do so arose and had a penalty appeal turned down early on. Took his goal - which killed the contest - emphatically. Such a precise finish.

Troy Parrott - Preston 7

A couple of loose moments but a committed shift from the Irishman and had a few openings in the final third. Wanted the ball and always tried to present an option to his team mates. Lacked that final piece of decision making.

Robbie Brady - Preston 6

Introduced in the closing stages and brought his typical bite on to the pitch.

Andy Lyons - Blackpool 5

Got his side on the front foot well when needed, but that often resulted on him being caught out on the break. Spurned a good chance from a header in the box that went over the crossbar.

CJ Hamilton - Blackpool 4

Left gaps at the back as he got forward from LWB, but linked up well going forward in the first half.

Kevin Long - Birmingham 8

Won 75 per cent of his ground duels and all of his aerial duels in what was his fifth home start since signing from Burnley in January.

Sam Szmodics - Blackburn 7

Looked the most likely to make something happen in the first half. Picked up some nice pockets of space and linked up with Dolan. Drifted out of the game.

Max O'Leary - Bristol City 6

Distribution has been called into question but was excellent today, sparking early counter-attacks by releasing the ball early with long throws. Relieved when Meite rounded him in the first half only for Vyner to head clear. Made a great punch under pressure. Caught off his line for the equaliser, his only blemish.

Jeff Hendrick - Reading 4

Very ineffective. Was there for short passes and kept things ticking over but overall his impact was very poor.

Mark McGuinness - Cardiff 4

Made a big mistake for the Piroe goal. The striker turned him straight from a throw-in and was allowed to hammer it past Allsop into the roof of the net. Piroe targeted him thereafter and it was a difficult afternoon for him because of it.

Callum O'Dowda - Cardiff 6

McGuinness needed a bit of help due to him being overloaded, but once Cardiff got their foot on the ball he began to provide his trademark crossing higher up the pitch. Off at half-time, presumably due to exertions during the international break.

Ryan Manning - Swansea 7

Started well and looked composed on the ball, but quickly got the run-around from Philogene who had plenty of joy on Swansea's left flank and was duly booked. Improved though and was vital in the second half.

Luke McNally - Coventry 5

Missed an important tackle 25 yards out from goal in the build-up to Stoke’s early goal and guilty of a couple of misplaced passes in an out of character first half from the Burnley loan player. Better after the break but the damage was done.

Jack Bonham - Stoke 8

Nervous moment when kick intercepted early on but brave to lurch into feet to grab cross. Eye-catching couple of saves in second half.

Will Smallbone - Stoke 8

Hard working, tenacious and continues to link Stoke as an attacking force and get into brilliant positions himself. Neat finish for the third goal.

Darragh Lenihan - Middlesbrough 5

Almost played as a midfielder in the first half with Huddersfield so deep. Gave ball away for the second goal.

Sean McLoughlin - Hull 7

Smart challenge to halt Jamie Lindsay in the Millers' first attack. Along with Jones, delivered another assured display.

Conor Coventry - Rotherham 7

Did well as Rotherham felt their way into the game after a sloppy start.

Chiedozie Ogbene - Rotherham 6

The away fans appreciated his effort but he was unable to deliver much service.

John Egan - Sheffield United 7

Fresh from facing Kylian Mbappe and Co. of France, Egan had an easier assignment here but will have approached it no less seriously and was imperious against Norwich's different threats - in the air, on the ground and everything in between. Looks a real leader in that back three.

Jimmy Dunne - QPR 5

Repeatedly caught out and dragged out of position in the first half, including by the long ball which led to the penalty.

League 1

Eiran Cashin - Derby 5

Got booked early on for a crunching challenge on Wes Burns. Has hit a bit of sticky patch in recent weeks and was outstripped for pace by Burns for the second goal.

Jason Knight - Derby 6

Didn't show that his international exertions had taken much out of the tank and buzzed around in the heart of midfield. Had shouts for a penalty turned down.

James Collins - Derby 5.5

Battled away to his credit and it was from a driven cross that nearly resulted in an own goal in the first half. Worked his socks off.

David McGoldrick - Derby 5

Not quite at his scintillating best. Much of his best work came facing his own goal or outside the box. Did plant a header into the side netting which was Derby's best chance.

Conor Hourihane - Derby 4.5

Didn't impact the game.

Marcus Harness - Ipswich 6

Kept the ball well for the Blues and was also on the end of a heavy tackle during his time on the pitch, which thankfully he got up from.

Jack Taylor - Peterborough 6.5

Just the occasional moment of quality on a difficult afternoon. Made a couple of good bursts into the penalty area, but the ball was played behind him on both occasions.

Joe Rafferty - Portsmouth 8 (Star Man)

Quality delivery for Dale’s goal, which summed up another eye-catching display. Defensively sound but also a huge threat from wide with the ball at his feet. Such a good player.

Sean Raggett - Portsmouth 7

Not required to defend much and very comfortable at the back as a result. Used the ball effectively too, vital in a match with Pompey dominating possession so much.

Danny Mandroiu - Lincoln 5.5

Bright in the first half but wasted a good chance. Faded in the second.

Conor Grant - MK Dons 6.5

Didn't get much opportunity to do what he does with Dons restricted to counter-attacks but didn't put a foot wrong.

Scottish Premiership

Jake Doyle-Hayes - Hibs 4

Kept in the starting XI after a very good performance at Celtic Park but didn’t replicate that here. Booked for the foul which led to the opener and hooked at the half.

Liam Scales - Aberdeen 7

With Considine's red card the Irishman was given more freedom to join the attack as the game went on, but was wasteful with the ball despite getting into some decent crossing positions down the left. But the Celtic loanee looked comfortable alongside his two new partners at the back, as Aberdeen wrapped up a third clean sheet in the last four matches.

Jonny Hayes - Aberdeen 6

The veteran winger is no slouch despite his advancing years, but was unable to combine his energy levels with some end product in the final third.

2/4/23

Premier League

Gavin Bazunu - Southampton 7

Kept Southampton in the game with some crucial saves.

18/3/23

Premier League

Gavin Bazunu - Southampton 6

Could do little to stop Porro's goal that was smashed past him from close range. Might be upset not to get something on Kane's header, while Perisic's effort was always heading in.

Seamus Coleman - Everton 7

Needed to rely on all his experience attempting to shackle the twin threats of Felix and Ben Chilwell down his flank but the captain produced another strong display in tough circumstances.

FA Cup

Josh Cullen - Burnley 5

Continued to graft but Burnley never had a grip of the midfield.

Michael Obafemi - Burnley 6

Worked hard with Burnley doing plenty of defending.

Championship

Andy Lyons - Blackpool 5

Much more reserved than he was in midweek in his wing-back role. Stuck to his task though even when the chips were down.

CJ Hamilton - Blackpool 5

Should have done better with his early chance when he hit the post. Pace caused problems but end product was poor.

Luke McNally - Coventry 7.5

Confident and assured in possession, the Burnley loan man continued his consistently high level of performance for the Sky Blues. Brilliant covering work when required from the exceptional talent.

Darragh Lenihan - Middlesbrough 7

A solid display that might not write the headlines but was important nonetheless.

Greg Cunningham - Preston 5

Forced off after picking up an injury in the build-up to Boro's early opener. Disappointing setback for him after a string of consistent performances. Boro had waltzed their way through all too easily for their first goal.

Alan Browne - Preston 6

Ran himself into the ground and tried to set the tone on Gentry Day. Played in attacking midfield, alongside Daniel Johnson, but spent most of his time defending.

Tom Cannon - Preston 6

Isolated up there in the first half but kept running the hard yards. Had a couple of efforts at goal and produced a fine save from Steffen in the second half.

Troy Parrott - Preston 6

Went up top with Cannon and saw one shot deflected over the crossbar after a nice piece of skill. Was busy up top but again, the ball was at the other end of the pitch for large parts.

Robbie Brady - Preston 6

Brought on for the final five minutes along with Woodburn. Pushed forward in pursuit of a consolation.

Jimmy Dunne - QPR 5

Honest and committed at least, but another Rangers player in dreadful form. Missed a decent chance when he headed wide in the second half.

Sinclair Armstrong - QPR 7 (Star Man)

Lacks composure in front of goal but his pace, power and enthusiasm at least gave the home fans something to be encouraged by.

Kevin Long - Birmingham 8

Long is slightly edged by his central defensive partner, but the January arrival is improving by the week. He played when he could and put the ball into Row Z when he needed to.

Jeff Hendrick - Reading 5

Was industrious in midfield and neat in possession, recycling the ball and playing simple passes to his teammates. However, his passing was more often than not backwards or sideways, with little penetration going forward.

Sean McLoughlin - Hull 6

Did well enough in the first half, looked to try and bring the ball out of defence when he could. A solid enough display.

Jack Bonham - Stoke 7

An outlet to defenders with the ball. Out quickly when needed and looked confident with basics.

Will Smallbone - Stoke 7

Good chance saved by Gunn in first half. Constant probing kept making chances.

League 1

Paudie O’Connor - Lincoln 5

Lost his temper in the second half and was exposed for his lack of pace at times.

Sean Roughan - Lincoln 5

Didn’t use the ball well enough down the flank.

Danny Mandroiu - Lincoln 5.5

Had a couple of good touches and moments. Sent a free kick just wide at the start of the second half.

Jack Taylor - Peterborough 8

Strolled around midfield areas in the manner of a player too good for this level of opponent. Passed the ball well and a strong drive into the penalty area led to a game-killing second goal albeit with the help of a home defender.

Conor Grant - MK Dons 6.5

A pretty quiet afternoon for the Irishman, didn't see a lot of the ball, but what he did with it was important and worked. Delayed and delayed and delayed to set up Kaikai for the goal.

Dawson Devoy - MK Dons 6.5

Came on when Dons were under a heavy spell of pressure, and helped alleviate that by offering a new outlet.

Joe Rafferty - Portsmouth 7

Largely dependable showing from the right-back, though got beaten to a coupe of crosses to allow efforts on goal for Rovers.

Sean Raggett - Portsmouth 7

Stood firm - in the way Sean Raggett always stands firm.

Eiran Cashin - Derby 3

Made a couple of errors that were unforced and having been a pillar of consistency throughout the season, he fell short of the lofty standards he has set this term. Marginally better in the second half but game was lost.

Conor Hourihane - Derby 3

Game totally passed him by and was hooked before half-time after Warne had seen enough to make changes. But in fairness he could have dragged all of them off.

Tony Springett - Derby 3

Physically outmuscled, a couple of errors, and just could not get into the game whatsoever. Was no surprise when he was substituted before the break. But he's young and he will learn.

James Collins - Derby 3.5

Never stopped chasing, but gave away a couple of needless fouls and didn't have one chance all afternoon. In fairness service into the front players was dreadful.

Jason Knight - Derby 4

Tried to inject some energy and some bite into the midfield.

David McGoldrick - Derby 5

Some neat touches, and a couple of efforts.

Marcus Harness - Ipswich 6

Some neat touches from the substitute, whose late attempts to wriggle free of the Shrewsbury defence often ended in him being fouled.

Finn Azaz - Plymouth 7

Always looked to be creative and positive whenever he got the ball but it was not easy to break down Forest Green when they mostly had 11 men behind the ball at times.

Scottish Premiership

Liam Scales - Aberdeen 7

A first start in over a month for the Irishman, who performed well alongside MacDonald and Pollock in a back three.

Jonny Hayes - Aberdeen 6

Full of energy as ever but had to be replaced at the end of the first half after going down with a suspected concussion.

Jake Doyle-Hayes - Hibs 8

A very impressive return to the starting XI. Consistently got his foot in to win tackles and disrupt Celtic. Subbed after running out of steam.

19/3/23

FA Cup

John Egan - Sheffield United 7

Had no choice but to try and play offside for the second goal, stepping out but Szmodics was onside. Gallagher and Brereton Diaz were a real handful and caused United's defenders problems but Egan won his fair share of the battle.

Sam Szmodics - Blackburn 7

Took his goal really well after being slipped through by Gallaher. Works hard off the ball and showed good quality on the break.

Evan Ferguson - Brighton 9 (Star Man)

This kid is going places. Made it 2-0 with an excellent finish after superb piece of control. Got his brace with another well taken goal. Denied opportunity to grab hat-trick after he was subbed off to a standing ovation.

Gavan Holohan - Grimsby 6

Battled well in the middle of the park and made it difficult for the Premier League side.

Alex Hunt - Grimsby 6

Pressed and worked well alongside Holohan but offered little going forward.

Championship

Ryan Manning - Swansea 8

The Irishman put in numerous teasing crosses from the left while he was very solid defensively, making a number of important tackles.

Max O'Leary - Bristol City 5

Should have done better with the opening goal on first viewing, allowing Cullen's tame effort across his body. Unsighted for the second and kicking could have been improved. Made a good save in the first half.

Mark Sykes - Bristol City 6

Was pinned back in the first half with problems down City's right and moved to right-back in the second half. Involved in the action both offensively and defensively but wasted a really good crossing opportunity.

12/3/23

Premier League

Gavin Bazunu - Southampton 8 (Star Man)

Got a big right hand on the ball to palm Marcus Rashford's effort away after 15 minutes before coming off his line to gather shortly after. Did just as well to deny Raphael Varane at the back post following a free-kick. Made an excellent fingertip stop to deny Bruno Fernandes on 70 minutes.

Nathan Collins - Wolves 5

Collins was a surprise substitute and Wolves struggled to adapt to a back three. Newcastle seized their opportunity and made Lopetegui pay for his change.

Scottish Cup

Ryan Nolan - Raith 6

Nolan was excellent other than his own goal but, at 2-0, it killed off any real chance of Rovers getting back into the game.

14/3/22

Championship

Andy Lyons - Blackpool 9 (Star Man)

What a buy. Took his two goals well and could have even more as he enjoyed himself playing as a flying wing-back.

CJ Hamilton - Blackpool 9

Terrorised QPR all night long. Involved in a number of goals, his pace a huge threat in behind.

Jimmy Dunne - QPR 4

Another Rangers centre-back whose decline this season has been stark. He was terrible again as Blackpool looked like scoring every time they ventured forward.

Danny McNamara - Millwall 7

Not as effective as he can be going forward but stuck to his work down the right flank and covered well when Millwall poured players forward at set pieces.

Ryan Manning - Swansea 6

Some good use of the ball and had a decent header saved in the first half. Desperately unlucky with the deflection that led to Andreas Voglsammer's goal. Fired wide at the end.

Greg Cunningham - Preston 7

Another committed shift from the Irishman. Started the game with aggression and made sure he was competitive in his duels. Could've done better for Rotherham's goal.

Alan Browne - Preston 7

A decent shift from the skipper upon his return to the team. Set the tone in the engine room and provided the cross which led to Cannon's opener.

Robbie Brady - Preston 7

Started a little bit erratic but settled into the game and worked tirelessly. Lovely composure with his cushioned header which set up Cannon to score the opening goal. Supported attacks constantly down the left.

Tom Cannon - Preston 9

He is getting better and better. In the right place at the right time for his goal, but a great evening's work aside from that. Had one chalked off and hit the crossbar too. Always on the move in the final third and linked play up efficiently.

Troy Parrott - Preston 6

Added fresh legs at the top end of the pitch and was a willing runner. Retained possession more often than not. Strayed offside once or twice when the chance looked on to kill the match.

Kevin Long - Birmingham 5

Long struggled in the first half and Davis breezed by him for Watford’s second goal. He improved in the second half and tried to play on the front foot. He took a booking to stop Davis in a dangerous position.

Scott Hogan - Birmingham 5

The striker missed a gilt-edged chance at the start of the second half.

Luke McNally - Coventry 7.5

Defended on the front foot, reading the game really well to intercept danger and winning all of his challenges in another faultless display from the outstanding Burnley loan signing.

Sean Maguire - Coventry 6

Worked hard in the No.10 role, pressing well and dropping into pockets of space to make himself available, as he did when fed by Hamer in the 27th minute and hitting an angled shot that was desperately cleared. Gave the ball away sloppily in his own half to invite danger on one occasion. Withdrawn at the break.

Darragh Lenihan - Middlesbrough 6

Tested defensively by a Stoke side that showed more attacking intent than most teams at the Riverside. Solid.

Jack Bonham - Stoke 6

Theatrical save to stop a Ramsey header. Some brave keeping at times.

Will Smallbone - Stoke 8

Nipped in to nick possession in useful areas and got into good positions to pull back.- Tempo instrumental to Stoke’s game. Fierce shot well saved.

League 1

Jack Taylor - Peterborough 8

Some majestic moments on the ball including a superb pass to help create the final Posh goal. Did the dirty work as well.

15/3/23

Premier League

Evan Ferguson - Brighton 7

May start the next game off the back of his cameo as he arguably did more than Welbeck in 12 minutes than the 32-year-old did in nearly 80.

Gavin Bazunu - Southampton 6

Growing in confidence following his display at Old Trafford and looked comfortable here. Saved well with his feet from Bryan Mbuemo early on but could do little to stop Toney's opener.

Championship

Sam Szmodics - Blackburn 7

A busy performance from the summer signing. He got into some good positions and again the move just lacked the final touch. His best run of form since coming to the club.

Jeff Hendrick - Reading 5

Kept things ticking over in the midfield with some nice short passes and found pockets of space.

Shane Long - Reading 6

Started out on the left side of a front three and worked the Rovers defence hard with his direct running and strength. Put in a very good shift and appeared to pick up cramp late on.

Mark McGuinness - Cardiff 7

With a wing-back one side of him and a right-back the other side, Cardiff needed his height, reach and physicality. Can hold his head up high after that one.

Callum O'Dowda - Cardiff 5

Stuck in a couple of crosses, but had no targets of note to really hit, which was disappointing. Might have done better to stop Jed Wallace's cross for Dike's goal.

Dara O’Shea - West Brom 8 (Star Man)

A superb defender and a superb servant to the Baggies team after being pictured last week purchasing a retro West Brom shirt in Birmingham. The 24-year-old is a real anchor to the Albion defence and showed yet again tonight registering three clearances, three blocked shots, won two of his two ground duels and three of his six aerial challenges.

Jayson Molumby - West Brom 5

A sturdy presence in the middle of the pitch but this wasn’t one of his better games in an Albion shirt.

Josh Cullen - Burnley 8

Oozes class. A lot of what he does might not be visible to the naked eye, but he’s so influential and integral to the mechanics of this Burnley side. Reads the game ever-so-well, breaks up play, wins the second balls, orchestrates passing sequences from deep, whether as the pivot or dropping into the hole to feed the full backs, and provides an extra layer of protection for his defence. He has everything you’d wish for in a midfielder in his mould.

Max O'Leary - Bristol City 7

Had no chance with the opening goal as Morris' header found the corner. Saved Pring's blushes with a good tackle following a short backpass. Kept City in the game with a save to deny Morris in the second half. Stood up to Luton's aerial threat.

Mark Sykes - Bristol City 7

Made a crucial block on the line to deny Luton from doubling their lead after 12 minutes which was almost as good as a goal. Handed a good test up against Doughty and dealt with him well throughout the game. Managed to get forward when possible, and provided an opportunity for Weimann for City's first shot on target.

John Egan - Sheffield United 5

A mix-up with Robinson for the opening goal and was turned on a couple of occasions. Was also beaten too easy on occasion when his man ran at him. Caught out of position racing forward plenty of times.

5/3/23

Premier League

Seamus Coleman - Everton 7

Pushing forward and overlapping to good effect, he was adamant he’d won his side a second penalty when going down under a challenge from Jack Colback, who seemed to catch him twice but while referee John Brooks didn’t want to point to the spot in front of the Trent End again, we all know that Everton’s captain is no diver.

7/3/23

Championship

Max O'Leary - Bristol City 6

Nothing to do in the first half except punch a corner clear. Called into action once or twice in the second half but everything that came at him was comfortably dealt with. Made a great stop with his legs in the 90th minute.

Mark Sykes - Bristol City 6

Struggle to make a big impact in the first half, although did have a header saved at the back post. Boundless energy on the touchline, which shouldn't go unnoticed given the amount of football he has played. Made a good run down the middle but scuffed his strike on goal.

Jeff Hendrick - Reading 6

Helped cover the backline and his passing was tidy as he helped to keep things ticking over in the midfield. Needed to offer more in the final third, though.

Shane Long - Reading 7

A typically hard-working display by the veteran who was involved in plenty of the action by being strong in the air and pressing the visitors' defence. Had half a shout for a penalty early in the second half too.

John Egan - Sheffield United 7

Sloppy pass in the first half and up against Andy Carroll, who won plenty in the air but Egan produced an excellent slide tackle to deny the home side what would have been a glorious chance shortly before Ndiaye's opener.

Dara O'Shea - West Brom 7

Confident, with a number of passes out to the flanks. Will have been disappointed not to have scored when he met Swift's free kick from the right. Generally had the beating of Fletcher. Won some important headers in his own box as Wigan ended strongly.

Jayson Molumby - West Brom 7

So important to how Albion operate, especially on nights like this when they needed a spark to set their performance alight. Quickly moved on from his bad miss early on to play off Dike and help generate the passage for his goal. Understandably looked disappointed when coming off.

League 1

Joe Rafferty - Portsmouth 6

Grabbed an assist with a lovely ball for Bishop, coped well in the large part with Norwood.

Sean Raggett - Portsmouth 7

Looked strong in the air and despite the Blues conceding three looked comfortable in the backline.

Paudie O’Connor - Lincoln 8

Another clean sheet for the Irishman, and another commanding performance at the centre of defence.

Olamide Shodipo - Lincoln 6

Showed good endeavour in the first half, was not supplied much service.

Danny Mandroiu - Lincoln 4

Failed to really get into the game.

Marcus Harness - Ipswich 6

The former Portsmouth man has become a regular from the bench of late and has made a succession of positive contributions in this role. He nearly found the net, flashing a near post header over from a corner.

Jack Taylor - Peterborough 6

Could have scored early on with a header. Kept making himself available for the ball, but it wasn't his best night of passing.

Finn Azaz - Plymouth 7

Argyle struggled to get him on the ball in the first half but they fared much in that aspect after the interval as he started to make things happen for them. That included winning the penalty from which Ryan Hardie put them 2-1 up after he enticed Harvey White into making a challenge on him inside the box.

Eiran Cashin - Derby 5.5

The Derby defender's mantra was safety first and he took very little risk whenever there was a hint of pressure in the first half. But cruelly he was the unlucky one who deflected Wright's shot past Wildsmith.

Conor Hourihane - Derby 5

Played with such composure in the first half and just facilitated the ball calmly and cooly. But Plymouth didn't give him the same time after the break as they upped the tempo. Subbed.

Jason Knight - Derby 6

Ran, ran and ran some more. There was one moment when he cleared the ball inside his own area and then ran the full length of the pitch to chase down the goalkeeper.

David McGoldrick - Derby 5.5

Showed ingenuity to produce an overhead kick that set Mendez-Laing away to score the opener. Struggled to impact the game in the second half.

James Collins - Derby 4

Had minimal impact when he came on.

Tony Springett - Derby 4

Crossing was poor.

10/3/23

Championship

Jack Bonham - Stoke 5

Was a busy presence in his own area but beaten by Blackburn’s first two shots on target in the closing stages.

Will Smallbone - Stoke 8

Should have had a penalty, long range cracker well saved and led the press to put Blackburn on back foot. Should’ve scored two too, hitting crossbar early on and firing over in second half.

Sam Szmodics - Blackburn 6

Probably the best of the outfield players but still below his recent levels. Set up the best chance of the night for Brereton Diaz with a nice through ball.

11/3/23

Premier League

Seamus Coleman - Everton 8

A more defensive display from the captain than we’ve seen at Goodison Park in recent times, he nevertheless used all his experience and know-how to keep tabs on Brentford’s fleet-footed attackers.

Evan Ferguson - Brighton 6

Had a really good, physical tussle with Leeds United centre-back Max Wober. Does a lot of unselfish work for the team but didn't get many opportunities to score in the box.

Championship

Max O'Leary - Bristol City 6

Didn't have a save to make in the first-half although would have been relieved to have seen Yates dribble the ball out of play. Made an easy save in the second half but had little else to do.

Mark Sykes - Bristol City 6

Got into some really good positions, particularly in the first half, but crosses were wide of the mark. Was far from happy with Mehmeti in the first half when he opted to go for goal instead of feeding Sykes free inside the area. Worked in tandem with Tanner to keep Rogers out of the game.

CJ Hamilton - Blackpool 5

A cameo to forget. Catching the ball before it had gone out for a throw-in led directly to Bristol City’s second goal.

Kevin Long - Birmingham 8.5

The veteran centre back produced a sharp finish befitting a clinical striker. The Irishman turned in an assertive display.

Josh Cullen - Burnley 8

A class act on the ball in the middle of the park. Involved in most Burnley attacks and rarely gave possession away.

Michael Obafemi - Burnley 6.5

Notched assist for Foster's first Burnley goal.

Luke McNally - Coventry 7

Defended well and used the ball well but rarely troubled in the first half, during which he headed narrowly over the bar from a Bidwell corner. Worked well with Doyle when City switched to a back four.

Sean Maguire - Coventry 5

Busy and hard working in the No.10 role where he showed promising signs.

Sean McLoughlin - Hull 8

A repeat of previous performances in the first period. Another really solid showing.

Greg Cunningham - Preston 7

Was beaten a couple of times but on the whole a committed and solid display to help keep the back door shut. His pass led to the opener.

Troy Parrott - Preston 5

Chased lost causes and put himself about but erratic at times. Lost his footing in the final third on a few occasions and made way at the same time as Woodburn. Had seen a low shot saved in the first half.

Tom Cannon - Preston 7

Busy and lively up top as always. Had a lack of service but his work rate was rewarded in the second half. Saw a good chance go begging but kept hunting for chances and took his goal exceptionally.

Robbie Brady - Preston 6

Brought intensity to the performance and helped North End improve as a team.

Mark McGuinness - Cardiff 6

His positional awareness was generally on the money. Only blot on his copybook was a yellow card for stopping a counter attack.

Callum O'Dowda - Cardiff 6

Didn't have as many opportunities to open up his legs as he would have liked early on, but did so more often after the break. Had a lovely opportunity after a link-up with Wintle, but his effort was blocked.

Jimmy Dunne - QPR 8

Had a fine game at the back as Rangers stood firm to collect the points.

Jeff Hendrick - Reading 3.5

Brought some energy to the middle of the park but struggled to make any meaningful impact on the game. Had one half volley blocked and again, lacked any creative vision.

Shane Long - Reading 4

Worked the channels but for very little reward. Also lost the ball on a few occasions when the team needed a breather and time to get up the pitch.

John Egan - Sheffield United 5

Never looked entirely comfortable up against Luton's frontline. Came closest to scoing an equalier late in the game but saw his shot blocked in amongst a scramble from a corner.

Ryan Manning - Swansea 6

Started well and got the assist for Joel Piroe's opener after trying his luck with a driven shot. Had to do far more defending after that as the visitors had so much of the ball. Had a number of efforts at goal though and made some key passes.

Darragh Lenihan - Middlesbrough 7

Marshalled a solid back line that, other than the sloppy early goal, didn't concede many clear-cut chances.

Dara O'Shea - West Brom 8 (Star Man)

A strong showing from O'Shea, who dominated his duels and kept the West Brom defence together when Huddersfield threatened to test Griffiths.

Jayson Molumby - West Brom 7

Got around the pitch well and kept good distances between midfield partner Yokuslu.

League 1

Luca Connell - Barnsley 8

Missed a golden chance before Phillips breakthrough. Came to party in second half.

Finn Azaz - Plymouth 4

Had played some good balls forward from deep positions in the first half to set up attacks, usually for Mickel Miller or Ryan Hardie, but when Argyle came under sustained pressure in the second period Azaz could not find a way to get on the ball and show his creative side.

Marcus Harness - Ipswich 7

On just after the hour and put himself in good positions, having one low shot saved and firing another wide which could have well-and-truly killed the game. Played a good part in Ipswich keeping control of this game.

Dawson Devoy - MK Dons 6.5

Shot-shy from the Irishman, had a few sights of goal but didn't look confident in pulling the trigger.

Conor Grant - MK Dons 7

His first start since December, and looked to take full advantage. Clever runs and touches in the first-half especially, Grant impressed.

Eiran Cashin - Derby 6

Unleashed one howitzer with his right foot which drew a save from Eastwood. Ripped into an early challenge in the first 10 minutes and always gives you blood and thunder.

Conor Hourihane - Derby 6.5

Conjured up another assist for Louie Sibley's equaliser which the attacker took with real class. Could see him show leadership in the first half when he was asking for calm heads.

Tony Springett - Derby 7

The young Norwich loanee made his first start and was impressive. Buzzed around the pitch, teased a couple of decent crosses into the box and it was his cute pass to Hourihane that had a big hand in the equaliser. Keen as mustard.

James Collins - Derby 6.5

Playing up front on your own is probably the hardest job as a player as you have to be good at everything. But he kept on plugging away and it was from his header that Long scored an own goal.

Jack Taylor - Peterborough 4.5

He at least showed some energy, but his quality was lacking. Cautioned for simulation late on which was poor to see.

Joe Rafferty - Portsmouth 9 (Star Man)

Uses the ball so well in attacking positions, particularly along the ground feeding the strikers to their feet. Such a key return to the side following injury - and defensively excellent. on receiving end on one awful Jaden Brown challenge.

Sean Raggett - Portsmouth 7

Such a dominant defensive display and also had his moment in opposition box. Book for strong second-half challenge on Dele-Bashiru which had the Owls fuming.

4/3/23

Premier League

Evan Ferguson - Brighton 7

Couldn't quite fashion him the attacking chances he would have liked in the box but worked his socks off for the team in a selfless performance.

Nathan Collins - Wolves 7

Collins had a few nervous moments and trod on the ball with one of his first touches, but he was very solid alongside Dawson and Kilman once he had settled down.

Gavin Bazunu - Southampton 5

Barely tested in the first half despite Leicester's pressure. Played out an awful pass straight to Kelechi Iheanacho on the hour mark that almost saw him punished. Flapped at a late corner that saw Harry Souttar smash the crossbar from.

Championship

Sam Szmodics - Blackburn 9 (Star Man)

After a superb performance in midweek, he followed it up with an equally impressive display. Works so hard for the team but he also showed great quality in the final third with his decision-making. Deserved a goal and came very close by hitting the bar.

John Egan - Sheffield United 4

Sam Gallagher gave him a tough time. Blackburn striker was a real handful and got the better of him. His booking for pulling Gallagher down two minutes from time summed up that battle.

Mark McGuinness - Cardiff 6

Missed a good chance late on in the first half as he headed wide and was caught out at times but formed part of a solid Cardiff defence who will be delighted with a clean sheet.

Callum O'Dowda - Cardiff 6

Met with a chorus of boos when he came on but had the last laugh.

Max O'Leary - Bristol City 6

His handling was excellent throughout as Cardiff concentrated a lot of their attacking efforts on launching balls into the box. The City No1 also swept up well behind the defence but the goalkeeper will be disappointed with Jaden Philogene’s goal which beat him at the near post from outside the box.

Mark Sykes - Bristol City 7

By far City’s best and most consistent attacking force. He enjoyed a lot of the ball down the right, as Cardiff seemed preoccupied in squeezing Bell and keeping an eye on Mehmeti. His energy and fitness levels are remarkable but if there’s an obvious criticism, it’s that he needed a bit more finesse with his final ball.

Josh Cullen - Burnley 7.5

Good distribution on the ball in the middle of the park. The one to get things moving throughout the game for the Clarets.

Michael Obafemi - Burnley 6.5

Went to left flank after coming on and made impact from the bench.

Luke McNally - Coventry 7

Had he not been booked in the first-half, the defender may have scored higher marks, but a robust challenge saw the 23-year-old go into David Webb's book. Solid performance.

Sean Maguire - Coventry 5

Didn't have much to do with the game already wrapped up when on.

Ryan Manning - Swansea 7

Worked hard the entire afternoon, and got himself into some promising positions in the final third. Final ball, though, was largely lacking. Made some good defensive contributions.

Darragh Lenihan - Middlesbrough 7

Another leader's display at centre-back. Reading didn't ask too many questions, but Lenihan did everything required with minimal fuss and kept his side on the front foot with balls out of defence.

Jeff Hendrick - Reading 4

Had very few touches on the ball and mostly drifted around in midfield. Lost possession on a couple of occasions.

Shane Long - Reading 5

Brought into the starting line-up to replace Junior Hoilett who is out with a hamstring injury. Should have had a penalty after he was grappled to the floor inside the box by Tommy Smith when one-on-one with the goalkeeper.

Danny McNamara - Millwall 7

An energetic display again on the right against a side that love to make use of the flanks.

Will Smallbone - Stoke 9 (Star Man)

Superb. Great work for the opener, playing a one-two with Brown as he sprinted to the by-line to find Laurent. Critical work in second half too. So useful on counter.

Jack Bonham - Stoke 7

Surprise appearance at half-time and did basics well enough to see the job through.

Greg Cunningham - Preston 7

His experienced shone through all game. Solid in his defending - in the right positions and making wise choices on the ball. Made a big tackle in the first half as Sarr looked set to break.

Alan Browne - Preston 7

Decent display from the skipper, who led by example in terms of energy and intensity. Was constantly hunting the ball down, reading the game and applying pressure.

Troy Parrott - Preston 7

Used the ball well and looked after it when played into his feet. Frustration for him in the first half, with the number 15 making smart runs off the ball but rarely being picked out. Was wiped out by Porteous in the second half and left baffled at the referee's decision not to award a free-kick.

Tom Cannon - Preston 6

Added a freshness to PNE's attack and tried to get himself into the game. Had he gambled with a run at the end he could've had a tap in from Diaby's low cross.

Kevin Long - Birmingham 6.5

One untidy moment shortly after the Bacuna goal when he and Colin collided near the touchline but other than that he seemed pretty comfortable on the right of a back three.

Scott Hogan - Birmingham 4.5

Once again completely starved of service and it seemed to affect his hold-up play. A missed penalty summed up a poor display.

League 1

Joe Rafferty - Portsmouth 7

Not his usual standard on delivery, but wasn’t alone in awful Blues first half. Always wants to get in attacks, though, never goes hiding, and defensively so sound.

Sean Raggett - Portsmouth 8

Comfortably the pick of Pompey’s defenders and another towering display as his recent upturn in form continues. Won everything aerially and a great far-post block 15 minutes from time.

Eiran Cashin - Derby 5

Couple of passes went astray that were fortunately never punished. Made one thumping challenge that was mistimed after the break that earned him a yellow card.

Conor Hourihane - Derby 5.5

Caught the eye with some glorious crossfield passing and registered yet another assist for Roberts' goal. Didn't have that same time after the break as Shrewsbury pressed with intensity.

Jason Knight - Derby 5.5

Played a vital role in McGoldrick's goal as it was his header that set the striker free and he took care of the rest with a clinical finish. Worked so hard.

David McGoldrick - Derby 6

What more is there to say? The forward is an ice-cold assassin when the chances arise and took his goal with such lethality. His 19th of the season in all competitions.

James Collins - Derby 5

Volleyed over the bar late on.

Marcus Harness - Ipswich 7

Forced two saves from the Burton keeper during his 20 minutes on the pitch, looking to make an impact.

Paudie O’Connor - Lincoln 7

Strong and composed in defence against a physical Oxford side.

Sean Roughan - Lincoln 6

Did okay down the left, held his own defensively.

Mide Shodipo - Lincoln 5

Worked hard down the wing and had one good effort on goal.

Danny Mandroiu - Lincoln 8 (Star Man)

By far Lincoln’s most dangerous threat all game. Everything good that City did came through him, and he bagged the winning goal to cap his good performance.

Finn Azaz - Plymouth 7

Was often the source of the passes which saw Ryan Hardie repeatedly running in behind the Charlton defence as he demonstrated his vision to set up attacks when given any time and space on the ball.

Jack Taylor - Peterborough 6.5

Glided around the pitch for 45 minutes without showing too much creativity. Struggled to get into the game in the second-half as Wednesday improved markedly.

25/2/23

Championship

James McClean - Wigan 6

Strong shift down the left, set-pieces caused concern in the North End ranks.

Will Keane - Wigan 5

Just couldn't get into the game and hooked after the hour, a move which was inexplicably cheered by a section of the away end.

League 1

Jordan Shipley - Shrewsbury 9

Arguably the best player on the pitch with Saydee, he linked up brilliantly with Bayliss in the second half and provided such a good attacking outlet on the left side.

Killian Phillips - Shrewsbury 8

The youngster was fantastic playing alongside his skipper Leahy. He showed real composure and calmness on the ball beyond his years.

27/2/23

Championship

Ryan Manning - Swansea 7 (Star Man)

Swansea's best performer in the first half as he played a fine pass to create an opening for Ollie Cooper before testing Viktor Johansson with a free-kick soon after. Brilliant assist for Joel Piroe and did plenty of defensive work too. Fantastic shift but was subbed in the second half.

28/2/23

FA Cup

Jack Bonham - Stoke 6

Back in for cup-tied Sarkic. Smart save in second half and good stop with his foot to stop Mitoma.

Will Smallbone - Stoke 6

Full of running as expected as he tried to limit space for Brighton in the middle.

Evan Ferguson - Brighton 7

Won the tie with a simple finish but also worth noting he actually won possession back for his side at the start of that move.

Sam Szmodics - Blackburn 9

He could have had a hat-trick. He was brilliant at pressing from the front and forced Leicester into several errors at the back. Scored a brilliant goal and could, maybe should, have had more. Perhaps his best performance for Rovers too.

Max O'Leary - Bristol City 6

No chance with the opening goal. Made a good save low down to deny Alvarez in the second half but again, had little chance with Foden's second goal and beaten by a brilliant De Bruyne strike.

Mark Sykes - Bristol City 7

Should have won a penalty in the first-half when he was clumsily bundled from behind. Moved to right-back in the second half and made a crucial interception against Alvarez.

Championship

Alan Browne - Preston 7

Committed shift from the skipper, who battled away in the middle of the park. Almost played Cannon through with a delightful pass in the first half and sent a stooping header at goal in the second.

Tom Cannon - Preston 6

Started the game a little sloppy with some loose touches, but grew into it and worked tirelessly off the ball - closing down defenders and making runs in behind. Was waiting for that one golden chance, with a couple of efforts blocked in each half.

Troy Parrott - Preston 6

Chased lost causes and tried to provide that spark in the final third. Imposed himself on the match a bit more than Delap.

Luke McNally - Coventry 7

Went in hard on excellent Man United loan man Fernandez in the first 30 seconds to introduce himself and was right on top of his game, winning his challenges. Backed up McFadzean brilliantly when Cannon gave him the slip, dispossessing the lively striker.

League 1

Eiran Cashin - Derby 6

There was one stray pass that presented Ryan Broom with a chance but he atoned for that error by making a vital block. Aside from that did fine against a very limited Robins attack.

Conor Hourihane - Derby 6.5

Had a big hand in the opening goal as it was his cross that was deflected into the path of McGoldrick just before half-time. Popped up in some good areas and teased a couple of lovely balls into the box.

Jason Knight - Derby 7

Industry was there as he chased a few lost causes and helped out in the midfield battle. Dropped into some good positions and played a part in the second goal.

David McGoldrick - Derby 8

Derby needed something to drop to the forward having struggled to break Cheltenham down in the opening 45 minutes. Took his chance superbly. Conjured up a brilliant assist for Dobbin.

James Collins - Derby 5

Tried to unsettle the Robins' defence.

Tony Springett - Derby 5

Showed plenty of willingness to press.

Paudie O’Connor - Lincoln 8

A defensive masterclass in the second half. Simply outstanding from the Irishman.

Sean Roughan - Lincoln 7

Solid in an unfamiliar position and didn’t put a foot wrong.

Danny Mandroiu - Lincoln 8

His moment of quality looked to have won the game for City, and he also hit the post late on.

Dawson Devoy - MK Dons 6.5

Helped change the complexion of the game with his forward play. Teed up Kaikai with a brilliant ball which was squandered.

Jack Taylor - Peterborough 7

An A for effort, application and hard work, but his more creative attempts were average. Didn't always find his man. One great late run ended with a shot on target that was easily saved.

1/3/23

Premier League

Seamus Coleman - Everton 5

Arsenal posed little threat down the right and appeared to focus elsewhere more, leaving Coleman with limited duties, which he handled well. His performance looked better after his departure, with Arsenal repeatedly exploiting space down Everton’s right as they converted their dominance into goals.

FA Cup

Gavan Holohan - Grimsby 9

Held his nerve at the crucial moment to convert the penalty on the brink of the half-time break, and battled well in the middle with some crunching tackles. Ice in his veins again for the second penalty. Just brilliant.

Alex Hunt - Grimsby 8

Saw plenty of the ball and moved it well to help Town on their way in transition, not an easy task in the middle as asked to cover a lot of ground on and off the ball, but did well.

Josh Cullen - Burnley 8.5

Class act in the middle of the park, fluid movement and precise use of the ball in possession. Quality on show for all to see.

Michael Obafemi - Burnley 6

First start for Burnley since January loan move from Swansea City. Plenty of energy on show and movement but few chances to speak of.

3/3/22

Championship

Sean McLoughlin - Hull 8

A busy opening, grew into the game and got a goal from Ozan's corner when he headed City 2-0 in front, although it was given as an own goal.

Dara O'Shea - West Brom 3

Began confidently, but could he have been tighter to Tetteh as he brought the ball down in the build up to his goal? Lost his aerial battle to allow McLoughlin to double Hull's lead at a crucial time.

Jayson Molumby - West Brom 4

Went about his business in the early stages as he'd left off against Middlesbrough. Bobbly pitch but Molumby was one of many culpable of being too loose on the ball. Avoidable yellow means he's one from a ban.

25/2/23

Premier League

Seamus Coleman - Everton 7

Another purposeful display from Everton’s captain but whereas he was able to push forward with regularity in the first half, he found himself penned back more after the break.

Gavin Bazunu - Southampton 5

Wasn't called into action all that much in the first half despite Leeds' dominance. Held his own when required before Leeds' goal which squirmed underneath him. Should have done better.

Championship

Luke McNally - Coventry 8

Made a terrific tackle on Clarke in the box as the wide man threatened to cut in on goal and made two solid challenges in the middle of the park to win possession before slipping a lovely ball to play in Gyokeres to set up Allen for the first goal. Good save to deny Diallo at his near post after the break. Superb throughout.

Kevin Long Birmingham - 7.5 (Star Man)

Outstanding first half display when he was on hand to head or clear everything, a one-on-one tackle in his own area against Carlton Morris was very composed. The Irishman was also a threat in the Luton box and didn't deserve to be on the losing side.

Scott Hogan - Birmingham 5

Finally, after two or three games, a chance came his way, unfortunately he headed it into the stand. He had another in the second half too but hit the bar. Blues need their leading scorer to be more clinical.

Max O'Leary - Bristol City 7

Had nothing to do in the first half but was called into action in the second period when he made a good save with his feet at the near post. A quiet afternoon but an important clean sheet.

Mark Sykes - Bristol City 7

Managed to get so much space behind his full-back with some really well-timed runs. Final ball frustrating at times but got into some excellent areas. Had a strike blocked in the second half but certainly playing with confidence.

Sean McLoughlin - Hull 8

Brilliant block to deny Mark Sykes from close range. Brilliant one midway through the second half to deny Sykes.

Cyrus Christie - Hull 7

Plenty of energy in the first half, lacked defensive cover from Ozan in the opening stages. Seemed unlucky to me with the penalty shout.

Josh Cullen - Burnley 8

Kept things ticking over well in central midfield for the Clarets. Cool and calm in possession throughout.

Michael Obafemi - Burnley 7

Made positive impact from the bench, scoring fourth goal.

Mark McGuinness - Cardiff 5

A few uncharacteristically wayward passes from the centre back. Just didn't look his 100 percent best for whatever reason.

Callum O'Dowda - Cardiff 6

Another who started well with a couple of strong bursts upfield. His influence waned as Cardiff's early dominance dissipated. Continued to put crosses into dangerous areas, though.

Greg Cunningham - Preston 5

A slice of misfortune with the own goal but an error nonetheless. That aside, he was committed as ever and put in a shift.

Alan Browne - Preston 7

Tried to inject some life into the first-half display and kept getting back in to defend when danger arose. The skipper did a job in the engine room and played the ball over the top for Cannon to go on and score.

Troy Parrott - Preston 6

Quiet in the first half and loose in some of his play, but improved in the second. Decision making let him down at times, but he showed some signs of linking up with Cannon and had a few runs at Wigan's back line.

Tom Cannon - Preston 7

Sent a dipping shot wide in the first half and then scored his first for the club in the second, with a lovely taken finish. His pass led to the winning of the penalty too. A solid performance from the Everton loan man, who stepped up when his team needed him.

Robbie Brady -;Preston 4

Introduced for the final 15 minutes or so and was shown two yellow cards.

Jimmy Dunne - QPR 5

Struggled at the heart of the Rangers defence. That area is a problem for Ainsworth.

Sam Szmodics - Blackburn 7

Scored his first goal since October at a crucial moment in the game. Did really well to beat Dieng to the ball and slip it through his legs. Ran his socks off.

Jeff Hendrick - Reading 6

Back in the side after missing the Cardiff game because of illness. Did not have a massive impact but covered in front of the defence well and was always available for a pass.

Shane Long - Reading 6

Helped see the game out.

Andy Lyons - Blackpool 6

Had a quiet first-half where we didn’t see a lot of him, but became much more of an attacking threat in the second.

John Egan - Sheffield United 8 (Star Man)

Tough gig up against Keinan Davis, who was a real handful last season in the colours of Nottingham Forest. Davis got in midway inside the first half but fluffed his lines, other than that Egan had him with his back to goal for much of the match. One moment in the second half where he was one on one against him but stood up well and his reading of the game was excellent.

Will Smallbone - Stoke 6

Industrious without reward and Millwall dealt relatively comfortably with set pieces.

Dara O'Shea - West Brom 8

Maybe could've dealt with a first-half Boro move at source when he lost a battle for the ball when pressing high, but otherwise this was another showing worthy of his season. Used his body to keep Boro at bay when a high bouncing ball caused uncertainty. Went close with a header from a corner.

Jayson Molumby - West Brom 8

Delivered exactly why he was brought back into the side. Bite and energy aplenty. What might've been if he'd connected properly with Townsend's pull-back.

Darragh Lenihan - Middlesbrough 5

The game was ultimately lost in those three minutes when Boro conceded twice. Usually well-organised at the back, Boro just couldn't get to grips with the West Brom attack and Lenihan and McNair allowed Dike to run in between them for both goals.

League 1

Eiran Cashin - Derby 4

Has been a pillar of consistency throughout the course of the campaign but looked rattled here as Barnsley pressed although in fairness, the midfield offered little protection in the first half.

Conor Hourihane - Derby 4

Fell asleep for the second goal and should have just followed Phillips but was too late by the time he realised the danger. Did have a hand in McGoldrick's goal and his free-kick should have led to a goal in the second half.

Jason Knight - Derby 4.5

The only midfielder who appeared to want to fight and scrap as one thunderous challenge in the first half proved. Also saw a shot saved.

David McGoldrick - Derby 4.5

Came close with a free-kick and scored with a brilliant chip to make it 2-1 which looked to have handed Derby a route back into the game. Not as influential as he usually is.

James Collins - Derby 4

Striker was a toe away from pulling it back to 3-2.

Tony Springett - Derby 4

Crosses failed to find their target.

Luca Connell - Barnsley

Was the least spectacular of the midfielders but contributed to a central three who clearly outshone former Reds captain Conor Hourihane and Spurs loanee Harvey White - both of whom the Reds tried to sign this season.

Dom Bernard - Forest Green 5

Didn’t contribute in attack and was replaced at half-time.

Corey O’Keeffe - Forest Green 6

Threatening in the second half, could have had a penalty but should have scored when put through on goal.

Paudie O’Connor - Lincoln 6

Consistently solid and led the back-line well.

Sean Roughan - Lincoln 6

Comfortable despite playing out of position in central defence.

Olamide Shodipo - Lincoln 5

Struggled to get on the ball and wasted a huge opportunity for Lincoln to kill the game off in the first half.

Dawson Devoy - MK Dons 5.5

Returned to the side after illness, but failed to fully fire and went missing for long periods before coming off.

Darragh Burns - MK Dons 5.5

Wasn't really able to get much traction when he came on.

Jack Taylor - Peterborough 9

He makes the odd error, usually with an ambitious pass, but he has been a complete class act since the change of manager. Bossed midfield with his tackling, anticipation and forward runs. Scored one, might have been denied a second one by his goal-poaching captain.

Finn Azaz - Plymouth 5

Played alongside Jay Matete in central midfield after replacing Matt Butcher in the 33rd minute. His corner from the left was headed home by Macaulay Gillesphey to make the score 3-2 in the 58th minute.

Joe Rafferty - Portsmouth 8

Involved in the build-up for both the opening goals, while continues to impress with his crossing from the right. Really has provided Blues with a new dimension.

Sean Raggett - Portsmouth 8

Barely put a foot head all afternoon, while never lets Pompey down in the air. A dominant presence and deserve plenty of credit for protecting Macey so well during the Robins’ much-improved second half.

Ronan Curtis - Portsmouth 7

Capped a lovely move to earn Pompey’s third goal and always in the thick of the action. Yet wasted several great openings in the second-half to increase their lead, usually with a poor pass.

Scottish Premiership

Jonny Hayes - Aberdeen 5

Replaced Ryan Duncan late on but never really got the chance to run at the Livi back line with his pace.

18/2/23

Championship

Will Keane Wigan 7

Might have done better with his one-on-one chance, but manager was at pains to point out his all-round contribution.

James McClean Wigan 7

Fired into the side-netting in the first half when he might have crossed, but set the tempo for others to follow.

League 1

Jordan Shipley Shrewsbury 6

He lashed one excellent effort over the bar in the second period when he connected beautifully with a half-volley and it was a positive showing from the left wing-back.

Killian Phillips Shrewsbury 6

Another energetic display by the loanee who kept trying to get his Shrewsbury team on the front foot, there was not quite the quality there he has shown but the work rate was.

20/2/23

Championship

Dara O'Shea - West Brom 5

Rolled by Davis in the build up to the opening goal. Guilty of overplaying when his pass for Pieters was cut out and Griffiths came to the rescue.

Jayson Molumby - West Brom 6

Like with last Wednesday, it was a story at either end for Molumby, who deflected the ball into the path of Sarr for Watford's second, before he created Albion's second with a lovely flick. Brought the energy Albion had been missing.

Sam Szmodics - Blackburn 7

Came back into the starting team and worked really hard. Looked like a man with a point to prove and he didn't let the game pass him by.

Danny McNamara - Millwall 8

Superb down the right flank for Millwall. Darted forward on occasion and made some important challenges.

Josh Cullen - Burnley 7

Generally a solid showing in the middle of the park, aside from mistake in first half went unpunished when gifting possession to Flemming.

Kevin Long - Birmingham 7.5

Stood up well in one-on-one situations when pulled wide. A brilliant goal-line clearance was the highlight of another convincing display.

Scott Hogan - Birmingham 5.5

Poor bloke had barely any ball in the first half, a large portion of which was spent trying to press for an error. Looked more of a threat after the break as Blues came on strong but still no real opportunity to poach a goal.

Conor Coventry - Rotherham 6

Growing into the Barlaser role.

Chiedozie Ogbene - Rotherham 6

Still not right on top of his game but showed hunger at times.

Georgie Kelly - Rotherham 6

Made Washington's chance which was missed.

Ryan Manning - Swansea 6

Got up the left wing well and put in a fine cross for Whittaker in the first-half in addition to testing Matija Sarkic from the edge of the box. Tougher second-half and naturally found himself deeper after switching to a back four.

Will Smallbone - Stoke 8

Set the tone for Stoke’s response to early goal with excellent energy and pressing. Popped up at both ends and even serenaded by fans for his 23rd birthday.

17/2/23

Championship

Mark McGuinness - Cardiff 7

A little lucky, perhaps, not to see red for a late challenge on Amadou Mbengue. Otherwise, as solid as you'd like.

Callum O'Dowda - Cardiff 9 (Star Man)

Cardiff's most dangerous player. Tore Junior Hoilett apart down City's left and stuck countless crosses into dangerous areas. Kaba could have done better with one or two.

Callum Robinson - Cardiff 8

Just a classy operator and looked really dangerous in that No. 10 role. Created and linked up with the strikers well. Smashed one effort into the crossbar in the second half.

18/2/23

Premier League

Evan Ferguson - Brighton 6

Had a few good battles with Tim Ream and fashioned a few half chances for himself but Fulham's defence made it difficult for him at times.

Gavin Bazunu - Southampton 8

Strong first 45 minutes from Bazunu who was off his line several times to win the ball. Kept that up in the second half under more pressure and claimed several high crosses when crowded by Blue shirts.

Seamus Coleman - Everton 9 (Star Man)

Sensational strike from the captain to beat Illan Meslier from the tightest of angles out wide, he’d already been getting forward to good effect for most of the afternoon.

Championship

John Egan - Sheffield United 4

Lost Bradshaw for the opener, who ran across him to fire Millwall in front. Then gave a sloppy pass away that put his side in trouble but luckily Millwall wasted the opportunity. United's defence were all at sea early doors and he was caught ball watching for the third as Bradshaw had the simple task of slotting home unmarked for the winner.

Ryan Manning - Swansea 7

The Irishman's energy on the left caused Blackburn problems while his ability to press and win the ball at crucial moments helped keep Swansea on the front foot. Tackled for fun, to his credit.

Andy Lyons - Blackpool 6

Lyons had a quiet first half attacking-wise. He dealt with a tough customer in Tyrese Campbell and was taken off as he looked tired.

CJ Hamilton - Blackpool 6

After coming off the bench at half time, Hamilton had a chance just before the hour mark, but dragged the ball wide of the target, when he should’ve been doing better.

Will Smallbone - Stoke 6

Should have buried first-half chance. Let down by lack of teammates attacking balls in final third. Close with free-kick into side netting.

Scott Hogan - Birmingham 5.5

Another match in which he was unable to make much impact, with Town going long he couldn't press and Blues' inability to play through Huddersfield's press meant there weren't any goal-scoring opportunities.

Sean McLoughlin - Hull 7

One howler in the first half of relative control. Had more to do second half when Troy Parrott came on, but was solid.

Cyrus Christie - Hull 7

One terrific piece of defending on the cover sticks in the mind from the first half. Kept going but was well-managed going forward.

Greg Cunningham - Preston 7

Made an important tackle on Pelkas in the opening exchanges and went about his business in assured fashion - firstly in the middle of the back three and then at left centre-back.

Alan Browne - Preston 7

In central midfield again and competed fine over the piece. Got up and down and tried to create things in and around the box.

Tom Cannon - Preston 6

Isolated for large parts of the game and had little to feed off, but kept running the hard yards and tried to look after the ball for his team. Created the big chance for Parrott.

Troy Parrott - Preston 6

Did impact the game in the second half. Went looking for the ball, brought others into the game and ran at defenders. Spurned PNE's big opportunity of the match, which he will be frustrated with.

Josh Cullen - Burnley 7

Energetic in the middle of the park and generally reliable in possession.

Darragh Lenihan - Middlesbrough 8

Rock solid once again at the back for Boro as he marked Chris Martin out of the game and made some big blocks as is standard for the stand-in skipper.

Jimmy Dunne - QPR 8 (Star Man)

Having switched sides with Rob Dickie to play on the right of the centre-back pair, Dunne produced an excellent performance, winning several challenges.

Luke McNally - Coventry 7

Continued to impress by playing on the front foot, attacking the ball and winning his challenges. Particularly good in the air and read the ball very well, getting a foot in well as Rotherham pressed late on.

Max O'Leary - Bristol City 7

Had little to do in the first half but showed great anticipation to come off his line to intercept a dangerous pass forward. No chance of keeping out the opener. Kept City in it with a smart save with 12 minutes to play.

Mark Sykes - Bristol City 7

Could have won a penalty in the first-half when he goes down in the area after nutmegging his man. Played a superb cross to the back post in which Mehmeti should have gambled on. Moved to wing-back for the final 20 minutes.

League 1

Eiran Cashin - Derby 9 (Star Man)

Man of the match display at the back and deserved his goal. The more the young defender is entrusted by Warne, the more he'll blossom. Won everything thrown at him and, with a win, goal and clean sheet, is doesn't get much better.

Jason Knight - Derby 7.5

Mr Reliable once again for County. Continued to be a powerhouse in the middle, looking to set up an attack or offer his services in the final third when needed.

Conor Hourihane - Derby 8.5

Once again a major presence on the pitch for Warne's men in the heart of midfield. Followed up Tuesday night's goal with two assists, winning the penalty and providing the delivery for Cashin's goal.

David McGoldrick - Derby 8

Scored his first goal since his hat-trick against Morecambe and was lively throughout. Dropped deep when needed to help his side and was a constant menace for the Charlton defence to deal with. Definitely should have scored more than his one goal though.

Paudie O’Connor - Lincoln 8

A man mountain at the back, headed everything away and shouldered the responsibility of being Lincoln’s rock when Jackson went off injured.

Sean Roughan - Lincoln 6

Put a fantastic ball over the top to Diamond in the first half which should’ve resulted in the opener. Did well defensively in the first-half, but struggled more in the second.

Olamide Shodipo - Lincoln 8

Best game in a City shirt for the winger. Looked confident after opening his account in midweek, and worked so hard down the left flank.

Danny Mandroiu - Lincoln 6

Hit the woodwork with an outstanding strike, but looked a little rusty after a prolonged period out of the side.

Joe Rafferty - Portsmouth 9 (Star Man)

Continues to look a class act since returning from long-term injury. Defensively excellent, letting nothing past, while comfort on the ball means he’s always willing to assist in attack.

Sean Raggett - Portsmouth 8

So strong on his Lincoln return. Won everything in the area and, apart from one dicey first-half moment, was largely fully in command in defensive situations.

Ronan Curtis - Portsmouth 7

As ever, in the thick of the action, winning free-kicks and even having a penalty shout against him. Also had very good goal-scoring opportunities. Never quiet.

Jack Taylor - Peterborough 8 (Star Man)

Moved classily through this game against vastly inferior opponents. His goal entered the roof of the net via a deflection, but was on target anyway. Won tackles, got Posh moving forward impressively. Man of the match.

Tyreik Wright - Plymouth 6

Put in a couple of dangerous crosses in the first half but there was not enough of them to put the visitors under any real pressure.

Finn Azaz - Plymouth 5

The loan signing from Aston Villa did not have his usual spark about his attacking play, although he did have one good second half strike blocked by Toto Nsiala.

Scottish Premiership

Aiden McGeady - Hibs 7

Got an assist in his half-an-hour and played another couple of dangerous balls. Pulled up after taking another touch on the break instead of playing through Elie Youan.

Jake Doyle-Hayes - Hibs 6

Came on for Jeggo with the game done.

11/2/23

League 1

Jordan Shipley - Shrewsbury 7

The wing-back offered a good outlet down the left side, and got forward well. He will be pleased with his afternoon’s work.

Killian Phillips - Shrewsbury 9

Got his first Town goal and was absolutely brilliant all afternoon. He seems to be loving his time at Salop since arriving early in January. Immense.

13/2/23

Premier League

Seamus Coleman - Everton 5

Always gives everything but while he rolled back the years against Arsenal the were times here on his 400th appearance that it’s painfully obvious Everton’s warrior captain in his 35th year as he – and other defenders it must be said – were left chasing shadows.

14/2/23

Championship

Scott Hogan - Birmingham 5

Totally on the fringes of the game. Spent his evening looking for scraps and making runs that weren't fed.

Mark McGuinness - Cardiff 9 (Star Man)

Up against the formidable Lukas Jutkiewicz and gave as good as he got. Not put a foot out of line since re-joining, really. Taken a load off the manager's mind with another giant display.

Callum O'Dowda - Cardiff 8

Added to City's attack and stuck to his task well in defence. Another who looks comfortable in this role at wing-back. Won the free-kick for Ng's goal.

Callum Robinson - Cardiff 8

Flicked a clever ball in for Wickham with his first touch. Then took on a number of players before smashing home a goal of his own.

Luke McNally - Coventry 7.5

Continued to impress as he played on the front foot with bags of confidence with another consistent display on the right of the back three. Kept his cool amid the late Millwall pressure when he cleared off the line to deny Shackleton an equaliser five minutes from time.

Sean McLoughlin - Hull 6

Similar to Stoke, had to head and kick lots away in the first half. Nothing changed in the second half, and had to do a lot of work.

Cyrus Christie - Hull 5

Completely done by Hernandez for the Norwich equaliser, improved after that, and did his work well before going off injured.

Jimmy Dunne - QPR 5

Always committed, but the mistakes keep coming, including when he misjudged a routine ball over the top in the first half and it almost led to a goal.

Sinclair Armstrong - QPR 6

Introduced in the second half. Exciting but the end product isn’t there yet.

Josh Cullen - Burnley 7.5

Great vision shown in the middle of the park and fantastic energy too. Very reliable in possession.

Michael Obafemi - Burnley 6.5

Came on towards the end. Was booked but in the right place to net dramatic late leveller.

Jeff Hendrick - Reading 5

Went close early on with a low shot which was on target but was well blocked and also had an effort just after half time which was saved at the near post.

Shane Long - Reading 4

Offered next to nothing up front aside from his usual intense pressing and high workrate. Admittedly, he was starved of service. Withdrawn at half time.

League 1

Dawson Devoy - MK Dons 6.5

Helped Dons create some good threatening attacking moments.

Marcus Harness - Ipswich 4

Back into the side and, like his fellow attackers, found the going tough as the Blues had good spells of possession but weren’t able to create too much with it. Had a couple of efforts on goal but couldn’t force the issue.

Eiran Cashin - Derby 6

Had some good moments, but then some uncharacteristically bad moments. Gave the ball away on a couple of occasions.

Conor Hourihane - Derby 7

Scored the goal to get Derby back on terms.

Jason Knight - Derby 6

Got on the ball a good amount in a deep role in the first half.

David McGoldrick - Derby 8 (Star Man)

Superb from the Rams’ talisman once again. Showed a touch of quality whenever he was on the ball and took the shot that fell to Hourihane.

James Collins - Derby 4

Offered very little in the first half and couldn’t influence the game up top. Hooked at the break.

Paudie O’Connor - Lincoln 7

Helped City hold out for a point and defended doggedly alongside his two other centre-halves.

Sean Roughan - Lincoln 9 (Star Man)

One of the performances of the season from the youngster, was absolutely superb and didn’t put a foot wrong as he kept one of the league’s most dangerous attackers in Nathaniel Mendez-Laing quiet.

Olamide Shodipo - Lincoln 7

Was at the right place at the right time to convert his first goal for the club since arriving in January. Looked offside but he won’t care.

Jack Taylor - Peterborough 6

Struck a great shot that the goalkeeper tipped onto the crossbar superbly in the early stages, but he also struggled to open up a packed defence after that. Sidefooted a decent chance wide.

Joe Rafferty - Portsmouth 7

He marked his comeback with a fantastic outing at right-back. Wouldn’t have known he’s been sidelined for five months.

Sean Raggett - Portsmouth 7

Great aerial presence as always, there were plenty of questions about the defender after his performance at Plymouth, but remained strong throughout the evening.

15/2/23

Championship

Max O'Leary - Bristol City 6

Usually so good defending his area, he had a couple of nervy moments from crosses including missing one in the first half which almost proved costly. Had little chance with the equalising goal. Made a good save against Lang in the 80th minute.

James McClean - Wigan 7

Received his customary 90-minute booing from the opposition fans but didn't let it get to him.

Will Keane - Wigan 6

Played his part as Latics improved after the break.

Greg Cunningham - Preston 6

Operated in the middle of PNE's back three and then in a central pair following the red card. Didn't do a great deal wrong over the course of the game and got stuck in. One dodgy pass in the second half which allowed Luton to break.

Alan Browne - Preston 6

Neat and tidy enough on the ball and put himself about in the middle of the park throughout. Went back to right-back in the second half. Picked out Parrott in the first half with a clever lofted pass.

Troy Parrott - Preston 7

Stepped up and delivered from the spot with an emphatic penalty. Isolated up there for large parts but had a couple of moments over the piece.

Tom Cannon - Preston 5

Grafted away up there but a difficult night on the whole. Struggled to look after the ball but admittedly had a lack of support or service - especially in the first half. Sent a shot narrowly wide after PNE's equaliser.

Will Smallbone - Stoke 7

Worked hard, linked play and put in some useful corners, including for Jagielka goal. Clever crossfield pass that led to opener.

Ryan Manning - Swansea 7

Operating at left wing-back, the Irishman got forward at every opportunity and put in a number of dangerous deliveries into the Blackpool box, one of which saw him claim an assist for Sorinola. Did more defending late on after a change of shape.

Andy Lyons - Blackpool 6

Another steady game. Not quite as adventurous going forwards as we’ve seen in the past but didn’t do a lot wrong.

CJ Hamilton - Blackpool 5

Helped Blackpool get up the pitch with his pace down the left flank but his end product left a lot to be desired.

John Egan - Sheffield United 5

Will be disappointed with the equaliser. Committed to Akpom but he went past him far too easily and also had two bites at the second goal but was unable to clear.

Darragh Lenihan - Middlesbrough 8

Couldn't beat McBurnie in the air for the early Sheffield United goal but didn't lose a single header after. Some crucial tackles throughout.

Dara O'Shea - West Brom 7

There were a few nervy moments at the back as Albion considered their passing game in their own defensive third, something which heightened the anxiety of the crowd, but O'Shea came out of it with a display of high confidence. Good with his balls into the channels and as fearless as ever.

Jayson Molumby - West Brom 7

Might've scored before he did, when he hit the post with a shot from range. In the right place for his first Hawthorns goal, but late conceding of the ball was costly when it led to the free kick.

James McClean - Wigan 7

Wife Erin gave birth to the couple's fourth child before kick-off, never any chance he wouldn't have played - and made an impression.

Will Keane - Wigan 6

Not one of his stand-out games but played his part in the link-up play.

7/2/23

Championship

CJ Hamilton - Blackpool 5.5

Back in more familiar role on the left wing. Put in a few decent crosses from that flank but overall lacked much impact. Brought off after 70 minutes.

Andy Lyons - Blackpool 7

Played at right-back and had tough evening defensively up against Jack Rudoni. Tried to get forward when he could though and scored sublime equaliser for his first goal in English football.

FA Cup

Josh Cullen - Burnley 7

Improved the tempo of the play from deep.

Marcus Harness - Ipswich 7

The attacker played from the left side and worked hard to link play for his team, having a shot of his own saved and producing a really nice touch which freed Leigh and Jackson to create a chance for the latter, before being replaced.

Louie Watson - Luton 4

Tough evening for the youngster as on a difficult pitch and up against a Grimsby side who roared out of the blocks to suffocate him of time and space, struggled to get into the game. Flighted one good cross in for Adebayo but didn’t react well to stop the ball reaching Orsi for the second goal. Late challenge saw him booked which meant he made way with Thorpe at the break.

John Egan - Sheffield United 7

Saw a header at the back post saved by Lainton after a dangerous Osborn corner. Organised the defence and kept a tricky customer in the form of Mullin reasonably quiet. Some key tackles and interceptions.

8/2/23

FA Cup

Shane Duffy - Fulham 7.5

Duffy showed no signs of rust in just his second start for the club, shown by a gorgeous cross-field pass within the first five minute towards Manor Solomon. His passing was generally of good quality and he was rarely beaten in the first half. While his legs seemed to wear second half, he still popped up with a valuable late assist for Fulham’s third goal.

10/2/23

Championship

Kevin Long - Birmingham 7.5

Looked to be the weak link in a defence that wasn't hugely tested in the first half, an under-hit back-pass almost caused his team problems. However, to his credit he was solid in the second half.

Scott Hogan - Birmingham 7

Worked hard on the press but wasn''t sharp enough to take his one half-chance in the first period. Had a better opening in the second but headed wide. Not his razor-sharp best.

Dara O'Shea - West Brom 6

The mix of brawn in Jutkiewicz and fleet of foot in compatriot Hogan was a tricky enough prospect for young captain O'Shea to deal with, but he coped well enough for the most part and looked to remain as composed as possible in a difficult environment.

Jayson Molumby - West Brom 5

Usually runs himself into the ground but he was chasing shadows at times here up against the excellent Bielik and Hannibal in the middle. Without doubt one of Albion's unsung heroes this season who has improved under Corberan, but this one fell short of his high standards.

11/2/23

Premier League

Evan Ferguson - Brighton 5

The Irish striker made his return from injury as he was introduced from the bench. He put in a shift, but like Undav, didn't have any real chances of note.

Gavin Bazunu - Southampton 6

Had very little to do in the first half. Slightly more involved in the second period but was denied a clean sheet by Jan Bednarek's comical own-goal, before conceding the second late on.

Championship

Andy Lyons - Blackpool 7

Rewarded for midweek goal and performance with start. Was positive going forward, but caught out at times defensively.

CJ Hamilton - Blackpool 6.5

Got in behind the Millers several times on the left flank and caused problems. However, lack of end product from winger and was take off on 65 minutes.

Conor Coventry - Rotherham 6

Did a steady job in midfield.

Chiedozie Ogbene - Rotherham 5

Pretty anonymous until hitting the crossbar in stoppage time.

Max O'Leary - Bristol City 8

Obviously playing with plenty of confidence at the minute, especially coming out and commanding his area. Made a good low save to deny Pukki at the near post in the first half. Kicking slightly wayward on occasions but other than that, another solid performance.

Mark Sykes - Bristol City 8

Another goal added to the tally for the in-form winger who slipped the ball under Angus Gunn to open the scoring. Worked incredibly hard, particularly defensively alongside the excellent George Tanner.

Josh Cullen - Burnley 9

Sets the tempo in this team and is an instrumental part of the Burnley success.

Michael Obafemi - Burnley 6

Given 20 minutes for his debut and showed promise.

Alan Browne - Preston 6

Saw a scuffed shot saved soon after Burnley's opener. Tough task up against Zaroury - who caused the PNE skipper problems. Headed a Cannon cross wide in the second half.

Robbie Brady - Preston 5

Brought some intensity early doors on derby day but Tella then grew into the game and asked him massive questions with his blistering pace. PNE's number 11 didn't really have any answer to that.

Tom Cannon - Preston 6

Pressed with pace and purpose, but Burnley managed to play their way out all game. Had a couple of runs down the left and created two chances for Browne with crosses.

Troy Parrott - Preston 5

Played in the pocket behind Delap and Cannon but just couldn't get into the game.

Mark McGuinness - Cardiff 6

Positionally excellent and made some big challenges early on. Barely put a foot out of line all afternoon - again.

Callum O'Dowda - Cardiff 5

So unlike him to give the ball away for Boro's second goal. Was his typical, consistently good self until then and afterwards, to be fair.

Callum Robinson - Cardiff 6 - Star Man

Really smart to intercept Zack Steffen's pass before setting up Kaba for his goal. Moved out to the wing in the second half and looked better as the game went on.

Darragh Lenihan - Middlesbrough 8

Super at the back as standard. He won everything that came his way, allowing Boro to quickly reset and get back to the attack.

Luke McNally - Coventry 7

Had a tough test against the big and physical Elijah Adebayo who was a real handful but stood up to the challenge well in a testing first half. Intercepted a ball brilliantly and drove forward and had a shot early in the second half but unable to get enough power to test the keeper.

Jimmy Dunne - QPR 5

Was caused problems by Millwall’s attack – and missed a late chance to equalise when he fired over.

Sinclair Armstrong - QPR 6

The 19-year-old striker lacks an end product at the moment but his pace and strength were a problem for Millwall and got the crowd going.

Danny McNamara - Millwall 7

Offered real positivity on the right flank and was well-positioned defensively to cut out a number of R’s attacks.

John Egan - Sheffield United 6

Solid once again from the Republic of Ireland international. Reading of the game was good and important, too, with the way Swansea pass the ball and look to slip runners in behind the defence. Unlucky not to score with a bullet header from a corner.

Ryan Manning - Swansea 5

Lively in the opening stages but, as with others, got pushed back. Will be disappointed not to have done better in the build-up to the Blades' opener. Worked hard defensively, making plenty of tackles and had a good spell in attack in the second half but didn't have the end product.

Will Smallbone - Stoke 6

Tied together some attacking moves and showed energy without being a threat.

Sean McLoughlin - Hull 8

Him and Jones saw far too much action early on, but defended well. Both him and Jones were very good.

Cyrus Christie - Hull 6

Marked out of the game going forward in the first half, but settled in and did his defensive work diligently.

Aaron Connolly - Hull 6

Not in the first half of the first half, before fizzing an effort wide after taking a delicious touch from Ozan's ball. Blazed the game's best chance over the bar early in the second half. Was not happy at being brought off.

Jeff Hendrick - Reading 5

Drifted around the middle of the park but had very little impact on the game. Provided an option at the edge of the box when Reading were deep in Sunderland territory.

Shane Long - Reading 6

Drifted into open space to invite balls through on the counter attack early on and was found on a couple of occasions but nothing gained. Played a clever backheel from the byline to Baba Rahman inside the box.

Sammie Szmodics - Blackburn 6

Brought on for fresh legs for Dack.

League 1

Marcus Harness - Ipswich 6

Some good work in dangerous areas during his spell in the game, as well as some good defensive work at times.

Paudie O’Connor - Lincoln 6

Was solid for most of the game except one poor sequence in the second half which led to him playing Rushworth into trouble.

Sean Roughan - Lincoln 7

Found lots of space down the left-hand side. Quality wasn’t always the best, but also put in a great defensive shift.

Olamide Shodipo - Lincoln 6

Did his job tracking back, but couldn’t get on the ball as much as he would’ve liked.

Dawson Devoy - MK Dons 7.5

Linked up really well with Eisa in the first-half especially.

Conor Grant - MK Dons 6

Chased and harried late on.

Jack Taylor - Peterborough 4.5

A disappointment after a couple of first-half midfield thrusts. Made a couple of poor decisions when in possession. Cautioned for a poor challenge and quite rightly substituted as the game was lost by then.

Finn Azaz - Plymouth 7

Replaced Callum Wright in the number 10 position behind the two strikers in the 67th minute and made an almost immediate impact, scoring Argyle's second goal with a cool, low finish after he pounced on the loose ball after his attempted through ball for Ryan Hardie was blocked.

Sean Raggett - Portsmouth 6

A bit of a mixed bag. Some excellent moments and exposed for others, but relishes a battle and that’s what it was at times for the Blues, particularly when up against Sam Cosgrove.

Eiran Cashin - Derby 6

When the space presented itself, Cashin stepped into midfield to find a couple of neat passes. Produced a brilliant clearance in the second half.

Jason Knight - Derby 5

Wycombe's midfield stopped Derby's from really putting their stamp on this game in the first half, but he was given a bit more space in the second half.

Conor Hourihane - Derby 4.5

Wycombe did not make the mistake they did in the first game between the sides earlier this season by allowing him time. That said had a decent chance early on.

James Collins - Derby 5

Battled away up front which led to him chasing a lot of lost causes, but he hung in there and managed to draw Derby level from close range.

David McGoldrick - Derby 5

Tried his best to influence the game and it looked like it was going to be one of those afternoons, but showed that one moment of class that led to Collins' equaliser.

29/1/23

FA Cup

Evan Ferguson (Brighton) 8

The impressive 18-year-old had an early chance cleared off the line by TAA and perhaps should have scored. A strong physical battle with Konaté. Provides a focal point that's been missed since Glenn Murray. Forced off after a nasty challenge from Fabinho.

Jack Bonham (Stoke) 6

Claimed set-pieces well. Not always the most confident with distribution. Point-blank save to stop Sweeney late on.

Will Smallbone (Stoke) 7

Some good reading of the game and athleticism to go with it as he nicked the ball in the final third. Should probably have scored from Campbell cut back. Growing more into the season.

Anthony Forde (Wrexham) 7

Played his part in what was an outstanding cup tie.

Tom O'Connor (Wrexham) 8

Pushed Paul Mullin close for the man of the match award, scoring a goal and playing his part in defence.

John Egan (Sheffield United) 6

Many home fans were baying for a red when he upended Mullin as he looked to race through on Davies' goal but a covering defender probably saved the Irishman's skin. Then popped up with the equaliser at the other end with a great finish to force a replay.

30/1/23

FA Cup

Conor Hourihane (Derby) 6

Clipped a lovely ball down the line early on for Barkhuizen, but had a moment when he gifted possession to Antonio. Had a long-range shot that flashed wide.

Jason Knight (Derby) 6

The energy was there, but West Ham showed the difference between the top flight and League One in that they never made an error when under pressure.

James Collins (Derby) 6

Came up against Premier League centre-backs and found them difficult to unsettle despite his best attempts. Put his bundle in, but West Ham kept him under wraps.

Eiran Cashin (Derby) 5.5

Won a couple of headers and made a vital clearance. It's great to see him back.

Tony Springett (Derby) 5

Tried to get involved but West Ham saw the game out comfortably.

31/1/23

League Cup

Gavin Bazunu (Southampton) 5

Let down by some poor defending for Longstaff's goals. A couple of nervy moments when exchanging passes with the defence and resulted to playing long balls. Made a terrific save from a volley from outside the box.

FA Cup

Kevin Long (Birmingham) 6

Slightly better from the Irishman although he was treading water as Jack Vale flew past him early in the second half. Should have done better than a weak volley after Trusty's flick.

Scott Hogan (Birmingham) 5

His partnership with Khadra did not look a natural fit. This was a fitful display from Hogan, although there were some bright moments on the press.

Sammie Szmodics (Blackburn) 6

Brought on late for Dack, and made the difference going forward as his cross led to the own goal.

Scottish Premiership

Aiden McGeady (Hibs) 5

Always available in wide areas. Kept the defenders on their toes without cutting them open, but delivery not up to scratch and fluffed a chance.

Championship

Mark McGuinness (Cardiff) 7 - Star Man

Pick of the bunch. Was everywhere when the danger started to come City's way. Headed countless balls away from the box and stood up to the physical challenge.

Callum Robinson (Cardiff) 5

Was a willing runner and looked spritely early on, but he didn't manage to get in the game much after that. Set up Wintle with that good cross into the box.

1/2/23

Scottish Premiership

Jonny Hayes (Aberdeen) 6

With the early red card to teammate McCrorie, the veteran was not able to go and support the attack as much as he would have liked, and was almost caught out a couple of times defensively.

3/2/23

Championship

Dara O'Shea (West Brom) 8

Excellent performance, particularly when you consider he was up against one of the most renowned attackers in the division. Took a blow to the face from Hamer's rasping strike but continued immediately unnerved, as you'd expect from him. So confident on the ball and is picking his passes.

Jayson Molumby (West Brom) 8

You know the score with Molumby by now. He's energy and pressing and tenacious in the battle with bite in the tackle, but he's definitely becoming more refined under Corberan. Lots of confidence clearly, as he was bringing out some lovely skill under pressure.

Luke McNally (Coventry) 7

Picked up from where he left off against Huddersfield with a confident display early on, including making a vital block to deny a goal in the 12th minute but missed a header and opportunity to clear the long throw in for the first goal along with Doyle. Showed his physicality when he took the ball and the man to stop the troublesome Jed Wallace breaking down the left. Made a brilliant tackle to deny Thomas-Assante.

Sean Maguire (Coventry) 4

Put himself about as City battled on in search of an opening.

4/2/23

Premier League

Seamus Coleman (Everton) 8

Had got his work cut out against Gabriel Martinelli who cut loose on few occasions but the Everton captain led by example, shackling him in determined fashion while setting up Calvert-Lewin with a slick cross in stoppage time.

Gavin Bazunu (Southampton) 6

Rounded by Yoane Wissa inside the first ten minutes but was relieved to see the forward hit the crossbar. Did well to claim the ball after a flick on from a long throw while Christian Norgaard closed him down. Could do little for the goals conceded as Brentford players were allowed time and space to pick out their spots.

Championship

Josh Cullen (Burnley) 8

Started really impressively and continued to tick Burnley over.

John Egan (Sheffield United) 6

Solid in the middle of the three and won most of the crosses that came his way. Up against new signing Hugill and he got little change out of the Republic of Ireland man.

Sean McLoughlin (Hull) 7.5

Steady enough first half, aside from one moment when his flick almost cost his side. Excellent in the second.

Cyrus Christie (Hull) 8

Enjoyed plenty of joy from the first minute down the right flank, and even more in in the second. Came close to scoring before he eventually did with a curling effort. A threat all afternoon.

Aaron Connolly (Hull) 7

Ran his socks off in the first period, like a terrier. Never gave the visitors a minute, was a real menace. Deserved a goal but was sacrificed in the final 10 minutes.

Mark McGuinness (Cardiff) 6

Another decent performance, in fairness. Solid in the heart of the defence. Won everything in the air all afternoon.

Callum O'Dowda (Cardiff) 6 - Star Man

If Cardiff were going to find a breakthrough, it surely would have come through him. Showed plenty of zip out wide and was one of the few able to open up the Hull defence. Only possible criticism is that he was arguably partially culpable for allowing Christie the space to score.

Callum Robinson (Cardiff) 4

Head clearly dropped after the penalty miss. A frustrating day at the office for the forward. Subbed.

Will Smallbone (Stoke) 5

Silly foul by corner flag gave Luton good free-kick chance then booked late on.

Darragh Lenihan (Middlesbrough) 7

Another typically solid performance, albeit against a side that didn't have much attacking intent. So unlucky not to break the deadlock when he hit the bar early on.

Andy Lyons (Blackpool) 6.5

Got forward at times from right wing-back role and put in some dangerous deliveries from set pieces. But was pinned back defensively for much of game due to Boro's attack.

CJ Hamilton (Blackpool) 7

Caught out defensively at times but added some pace going forwards for the Seasiders. One of main attacking outlets for the Seasiders, particularly after the break.

Alan Browne (Preston) 7

Committed shift from the skipper, who looked as sharp as anyone in home colours. Created the early chance for Cannon with a cross to the back post and saw a left-footed volley saved. Got up and down pretty well, even if everything didn't come off for him.

Robbie Brady (Preston) 4

Costly error for the first Bristol City goal. Kept plugging away down that left but it just didn't happen for him. Saw one shot deflect just wide in the second half.

Tom Cannon (Preston) 6

Full of running and determination, even if the final touch, pass or shot eluded him at times. Had a big chance to head PNE ahead but saw it saved early on. O'Leary kept his powerful volley out just after half-time.

Greg Cunningham (Preston) 6

Slotted in for Lindsay in the heart of defence with no real fuss. Back on the pitch and put in a steady 45 minute shift.

Max O'Leary (Bristol City) 7

A big save early on which came just a minute before City's opener when he denied Cannon from close range. Three top-class saves to deny Evans in the first half and Cannon at the beginning of the second. His one error led to a goal when he fumbled a strike from distance. An easy eight if it wasn't for the fumble.

Mark Sykes (Bristol City) 7

Gifted the opening goal when taking advantage of Brady's error but showed composure to round the keeper before firing into an empty net. Enjoyed space early on in the game but faded as the contest went on. Moved to wing-back for the final 20 minutes.

Jeff Hendrick (Reading) 8

Was tidy and neat for the first hour but began to stamp his authority on the game for the final 30 minutes, culminating in a stunning volley to draw the sides level.

Shane Long (Reading) 6

Ran hard, as you would expect, but saw little in the way of shooting chances. Won a clever penalty to kickstart the comeback.

Ryan Manning (Swansea) 7

The Irishman made a number of timely tackles to help keep Swansea on top. Always able to join attacks, such was his side's dominance of the ball and carried a real threat from the left in another fine display.

Kevin Long (Birmingham) 5

Looked way off the pace in the first half again, a weak early header inviting a shot from Piroe. Did OK after the move to a back four but Harlee Dean's return can't come quickly enough.

Scott Hogan (Birmingham) 5.5

Squeezed his penalty past Fisher but looked exasperated as Blues were so wasteful with what little possession they had in the first 45. After that he was never more than on the fringes of the game.

League 1

Paudie O’Connor (Lincoln) 7

Solid once again and made a great challenge on Liam Coyle late on to preserve City’s clean sheet.

Sean Roughan (Lincoln) 7

Had a slightly tougher time in the first-half against Longelo but improved in the second and produced an outstanding touch to put Lincoln two ahead.

Olamide Shodipo (Lincoln) 7

Struggled early on against Astley but seemed to gain confidence as Lincoln went further ahead and was at the centre of the action that resulted in Perritt getting sent off.

Dawson Devoy (MK Dons) 7

Played the key ball for Eisa to win the early penalty. Showed some muscle in the centre of the park.

Richard Keogh (Ipswich) 5

In to try and help Ipswich look after the physical threat of Joe Ironside, who Cambridge look to play off whenever possible. It worked to an extent, but Ipswich were guilty of backing off at times when that second ball came loose. Had a few occasions where he was seriously tested for pace and, though he was beaten, Cambridge either couldn’t take advantage or he did enough to rectify the situation.

Marcus Harness (Ipswich) 6

The third of the three half-time substitutes made a positive contribution during his time on the pitch, including a brilliant through-ball for Burns. He occupied a role which tried to link an under-manned midfield to attack and did a good job of it.

Eiran Cashin (Derby) 8

A triumphant return to the starting 11 and the young defender hardly put a foot wrong as normal service was resumed alongside Forsyth in the back four.

Jason Knight (Derby) 8.5

Such an energetic performance from the midfielder who just never stopped. A real livewire in the heart of midfield and even more important now Max Bird is injured. Sets the tone.

Conor Hourihane (Derby) 8

Had a solid game in the heart of midfield and just kept possession and moved the ball smartly in the heart of midfield. Just cleared the bar with a free-kick.

James Collins (Derby) 8

Some Derby fans may question his lack of goalscoring form, but his overall contribution to the team is so important. Works so hard and always occupies defenders hence why he won the penalty for McGoldrick's hat-trick. Scored from the spot too.

David McGoldrick (Derby) 9 - Star Man

Conjured up a wonderful finish right on the stroke of half-time which was the hallmark of a player that is far too good for League One. It's a treat to watch him when he's in this kind of form. A third hat-trick of the season and was unstoppable.

Tony Springett (Derby) 6

Buzzed away at the top end of the pitch.

Jack Taylor (Peterborough) 6

By his own high standards he was no better than average before limping off with a sore ankle.

Sean Raggett (Portsmouth) 8

Bernard’s arrival has created added pressure and the centre-half responded superbly. Rock solid throughout, dominant aerially and also used possession well.

Tyreik Wright (Plymouth) 6

Started the match in one of two the 'number 10' roles alongside Finn Azaz, and had a free-kick from the edge of the Owls' box parried away by Cameron Dawson. Moved to left wing-back from the start of the second half after Edwards was taken off.

Finn Azaz (Plymouth) 5

Argyle just could not get their attacking playmaker into the game, whether that was alongside Tyreik Wright in the first half, or on his own behind striker Sam Cosgrove and Ryan Hardie in the second half.

Scottish Premiership

Liam Scales (Aberdeen) 6

Was guilty of some stray passes early on, but grew into the game as it went on and threaded some nice forward balls down the left.

Jonny Hayes (Aberdeen) 7

A typical performance from the Irishman, who also registered an assist after setting up Duk for the opener. Unfortunately didn't see out the half and had to be replaced by Hayden Coulson.

28/1/23

FA Cup

Kevin Long (Birmingham) 5.5

Not especially convincing but he just about kept up his end of the bargain. Subbed when Blues went to a back four. Another display that didn't inspire confidence.

Max O'Leary (Bristol City) 8

Made a really good save with his feet to deny Dike just moments after City had doubled their lead. Excellent from crosses and commanding his area. A brilliant double save in the second half denied Thomas-Asante initially before clawing out an effort from the resulting corner.

Mark Sykes (Bristol City) 8

Had some joy down the right and linked up with Tanner really well at times. Played a brilliant cross that allowed Scott to grab City's second and could have assisted Wells before that. Quieter in the second half but still posed a threat and could have had a goal for himself but dragged his strike wide.

Dara O'Shea (West Brom) 6

Had a mixed game, dealing well under pressure but was unable to block City's counter-attack on a separate occasion.

Jayson Molumby (West Brom) 6

Lost the ball in midfield which led to Bristol's counter-attack, and would have been disappointed with the manner Albion conceded the second goal.

Marcus Harness (Ipswich) 7

Worked hard to pressure Burnley throughout his time on the pitch and had a good early effort bounce clear off the top of the bar. Had another big opening before the break when he picked up a loose ball and drove towards goal. He went alone and was crowded out, with runners either side.

Josh Cullen (Burnley) 7

Instilled more solidity and rhythm into the midfield.

Andy Lyons (Blackpool) 7

Caused issues at times for Saints when he got forward down right flank. Struggled at times defensively against the likes of Perraud, but looked good going forward when given the chance.

CJ Hamilton (Blackpool) 6

Pace helped when going forward, but question marks defensively and gave away free kick which led to opening goal. Had to be careful for much of game with yellow card hanging over him.

Alan Browne (Preston) 6

Lacked that one-v-one quality to hurt Spurs going forward, but loads of endeavour from the skipper at right wing-back. Started positively and tried to get North End going, even if that final pass or cross eluded him.

Robbie Brady (Preston) 6

Committed and organised with his defensive duties. Wanted to see more consistent quality with his crosses, but they were pretty hit and miss. Kept working away down the left before being replaced 12 minutes from time.

Tom Cannon (Preston) 6

Buzzed around and ran himself into the ground chasing lost causes. Didn't see much of the ball and put himself about and defenders under pressure. Had a chance to slip Evans in first-half but went solo.

Matt Doherty (Tottenham) 5

Didn't see much of the ball throughout his display but didn't do much with it when he did get it.

Championship

Luke McNally (Coventry) 7

Handed his debut in place of the ill Michael Rose and kept things simple early on with plenty of short and safe passes but showed his pace and strength in beating Duane Holmes over 20 yards and holding him off. Got his head on the end of a corner in Huddersfield’s box and took a no-nonsense approach to defending overall on a solid debut. Never put a foot wrong.

Sean McLoughlin (Hull) 7

Quiet opening as City dominated, but made two really important headed clearances as QPR bared their teeth for the first time.

Cyrus Christie (Hull) 7

Started brilliantly down the right, his terrific work set up Connolly's opening goal but could have done better with a couple of promising deliveries. Another good display from Mr Consistent.

Aaron Connolly (Hull) 9 - Star Man

On his birthday he got off to the perfect start with a goal after 10 minutes, a really confident finish. Could have scored just before that, too. Brilliant second goal, and a deserved standing ovation.

Jimmy Dunne (QPR) 5

Made some important blocks but it was a day to forget for the big Irishman on a terrible afternoon for the QPR defence.

Sinclair Armstrong (QPR) 6

One of the few Rangers players who can emerge with any credit. Came on at half-time and his pace and power caused Hull some problems as the visitors pushed for an equaliser.

Darragh Lenihan (Middlesbrough) 8

A solid performance at the back from the Irish international. He read the game well and made some important blocks, interceptions and headers.

League 1

Paudie O’Connor (Lincoln) 6

Did well in dealing with balls over the top, and was consistent in his defending.

Sean Roughan (Lincoln) 5

Solid enough defensively but was poor from set-pieces. Multiple deliveries were wasted by the young full-back, preventing Lincoln from building up a spell of pressure.

Danny Mandroiu (Lincoln) 5

Poor game from Mandroiu. Nothing worked for the Irishman and he made a few uncharacteristic mistakes in possession.

Olamide Shodipo (Lincoln) 6

Had a few bright moments in the first half but faded away in the second 45. Looked tidy with the ball at his feet.

Jack Taylor (Peterborough) 9

An outstanding personal performance. He won tackles and headers and passed the ball impressively. Some of his driving runs forward were a sight to behold. Should have scored with a close range header, but a minor quibble on the day.

Sean Raggett (Portsmouth) 7

The pick of the defence, although perhaps asked to do too much on the ball. Regardless, strong and dominating as ever, especially during tough second half at times.

Scottish Premiership

Aiden McGeady (Hibs) 7

Didn’t have as big an impact as some of his team-mates but a decent outing nonetheless.

Liam Scales (Aberdeen) 2

Another lacklustre showing from the Celtic loanee, who initially had a positive start to his Aberdeen career. Sent off and gave away the penalty for Hibs' fifth.

Jonny Hayes (Aberdeen) 2

Hayes will always do a job where and when required but he was woefully out of his depth at left back in Leith. Subbed.
