Any word on dates / opponents for the November Friendlies? Think we have one home and one away?

It would be leaving it fairly late but wonder would they wait until after the euros draw on October 9th to see who we are playing (and not organise a match with an opponent who you then draw).
Have a feeling we will play one of USA or Iran. Maybe even both!

Yeah, it’s a good point but it would be leaving it very late, maybe they will plan but not announce until after that and switch if needed?
If it’s a big name in Dublin, they will want to get tickets sold asap though I’m sure. |

Id say Italy could be on the cards since we were planning to play them in March instead of Belgium only for them getting sucked into the playoffs.

I think we can only play other teams that haven’t qualified, right?
There’s only a week between finish of European leagues and the start of the tournament… |

Hopefully Brazil, so if we beat them it would be the biggest moment in Irish sports since...well, Romania 1990 (or yesterday, if you were to believe the hype).

In seriousness, along with the tournament in Iceland in 1986, beating Brazil in 1987 was a bit of a springboard in developing the confidence of an emerging Irish team, and is a major part of the legacy of Charlton. If we were to beat Brazil in November, I suspect most on here would delight in winning it and also see it as further development for Kenny.

But it would be quickly forgotten if we had a disastrous qualifying campaign next year finishing anywhere below 3rd spot. Johnny Sexton was completely right in keeping the NZ win in perspective and to keep improving going into the world cup next year. It's exactly the rhetoric the rugby fans and media in this country need to hear and I've never really heard that before after Ireland had these 'historic' test wins. Its a nice landmark to beat NZ when very few teams have done it in their own backyard and I certainly wouldn't begrudge the players and coaching staff enjoying a fantastic win. The fairweather rugby barstooler fans on the other hand..... |

But rugby fans do acknowledge chronic failings at the RWC. Even in 1999 before we started to turn the tide we had the disaster out loss to Argentina. Or in 2007 when after a lot of talk, we didn’t get out of the group. Or when we failed to show up in the 2011 and 2015 Quarter Finals, albeit the latter with significant injuries. Fans are aware that this is a path trodden before, where 18 months before the RWC the Irish team enjoys a bit of a spike, only for it to flop at the tournament.
But, this particular result and achievement is not being taken lightly as it is an achievement considering the difficulty in doing so, and the lack of precedent for the Irish team and limited precedent for other teams. So much so that it has left the fabric of New Zealand rugby in a bit of a tailspin at there seems to be a lot of finger pointing going on. |
