Are the refs worse for agreeing with these VAR calls when a lot of them esp yesterday are obvious to all of us? I know they have to make their mind up in a pressure situation but its bad when you hear commentators say "hes going to the monitor we all know what that means". Meaning hes going to agree with VAR no matter what. Although one of the refs stuck to his own decision yesterday. Cant remember the game looked a peno in the box. I only seen it out of the corner of my eye.

Ostensibly yes, but under the politics (small "p") of refereeing, they are very loathe to do so, since the refereeing hierarchy (FIFA, UEFA and PGMOL etc) has decided that VAR is a "good thing", and so feels compelled to support it come-what-may. (There's also been a lot of money spent on it)

And since the hierarchy decides which referees get preferrment, it take a brave referee to stand up for himself and tell the bigwigs in Stockley Park that it'is they who've got it wrong.

That said, Michael Oliver stuck to his guns and refused to overturn a decision yesaterday, even after being called over to the monitor.

I suspect he'll get away with that one, both because he's generally regarded as England's top young referee, but also because the outcry from the weekend's outrageous decisions has caused PGMOL to backtrack:

Naive from Arteta yesterday. Didn't have to go O'Neill vs Denmark with the subs at 2-1, they were still well in the game.

Flaws were exposed in Arsenal's system yesterday. Jesus was excellent in his hold-up play but then there's no focal point/threat in the box while he's doing that. Odegaard and Sake need to stop trying the little passes and take shots on when in good positions.

Zinchenko's inverted position works fine when you have the ball but Arsenal aren't City so will lose the ball easier. His position causes the midfielders to move wider, leaving big holes in the midfield which is where United's goals came from.

United were ruthless in front of goal in fairness.

Arsenal brought on 15 year old Ethan Nwaneri for his PL debut. Shocked

He's now the youngest player in the history of The PL.

Arsenal were excellent today. Saliba is classy.

Think it could be a procession to the title in this World Cup season
Don’t see it being a classic EPL season

He was part of a defence that conceded 3 to a poor United attack.

You could have thrown in any bang average centre back and he wouldn’t have had much trouble dealing with Rashford today.

The chiefs of the EPL will be hoping that there will be some title race this season. If City win by 20+ points, more serious questions will be asked about City’s financial affairs and the competitive nature of the league. City and the league were blessed that Liverpool challenged them over the past few years. However, things are beginning to look too heavily skewered in their favour.

I wasn’t only talking about today
He’s been very good in every game so far for City, including today
He’ll start when everyone’s fit the way he’s going

Don’t worry. Newcastle will start winning everything in about 5 years

Too late, I fear.

City's financial doping mostly occurred in the first few years after the Sheikhs took over - facilities, management, marketing, processes etc.

And whatever else you think of them, they applied this money very cleverly, unlike those other big Gulf dopers, PSG.

Meaning that with the basics in place, the success achieved from their results on the field (prize money, TV, CL and sponsorship etc), I suspect they're now a lot closer to paying their way within the present financial restrictions.

Swiss Ramble explains it better than I can in his analysis of their 2020/21 Accounts, including:
"MCFC swung from £125m loss before tax to £5m profit (£2m after tax), despite the adverse impact of COVID, as revenue increased £92m (19%) from £478m to club record £570m, profit from player sales rose £29m to £69m and operating expenses fell £11m (2%)."

Note the transfer profit, btw

Surely Haaland's going to break the record for most goals in a PL season. He has 14 already.

Only injuries can stop him achieving this because defenders can't.
