Id take the draw and look to do them at home. Same with the Dutch. The fixture scheduling done us no favors looking at it here again. Greece away in June. France followed by the Netherlands in a double header, 3 days apart. I couldn't imagine us being able to go again 3 days later with another all out performance similar to this weeks. No game on the final match day. France play Greece presumably already qualified with a half arsed performance / B team out.

They would be in and around our level. Would be a big disappointment if we actually lost to them, as they are not superior to us. A draw would be the most likely result based on current form.

Would be a result similar in magnitude to beating Austria 1-0 in Vienna, and would require a similar level of performance.

Looking at Greece's results over the last 2 years and they haven't really had any bad results. Dropped some points against the likes of Georgia at home but also beating teams who we would be struggling to beat.
Will be a huge result if we could actually win there. Think this is one of those where a draw wouldn't be a bad result but if are realistic about trying to get 2nd we have to get the 3 and lay down the marker. Would be one of the better Ireland results of the last 10 years if we achieved it.

As I see it, there are 4 dodgy groups at this point in time and we need two of them to go our way. The key head to heads are as follows. We need 2 of Wales, Austria, Israel and Bosnia/Iceland to win out. Early days, but so far so good, bar Israel's group, although it's worth noting Romania have done nothing more than you'd expect at this point beating Belarus at home and Andorra away. The clashes between the sides listed will have a huge bearing. GROUP D - Wales vs Turkey - Turkey beat Armenia away 2-1, but then lost at
home to Croatia. Wales have taken a point away to Croatia and won at home to
Latvia, so good start for Wales GROUP F - Austria vs Sweden - Austria have taken 6 from 6 with home wins over
Azer and Estonia, while Swedes are on 3 from 6 having lost their opener at home
to Belgium before winning at home vs Azer. GROUP I - Israel vs Romania - Romania have won 2 from 2 home to Belarus and
away to Andorra. Israel dropped pts at home to Kosovo in a 1-1 draw and were then beaten
by the Swiss away from home GROUP J Bosnia or Iceland vs Slovakia - Slovakia had a good home win over Bosnia but
dropped 2pts in a home draw with Lux. Bosnia and Iceland are both
3 from 6. |

Thats based on their own projections, not how it stands. As it stands we're one place off. Though thats with the Netherlads taking up a playoff spot as they're currently 3rd in the group. If they finished 2nd we'd be next in line for their playoff. You can see the updated table as it stands here: Edited by Bandwagon - 29 Mar 2023 at 3:58pm |

The weather in Athens come June shouldn't be an issue for our team, but inevitably it will be used as an excuse if we only come out of the game with one point or even a defeat. The importance of a win in that game cannot be emphasized enough.

Athens can be very oppressive in summer, lots of air pollution and it is hot, much more uncomfortable than the islands. 945 ko should make things a good bit better though, mid 20’s probably.

9.45?...even better. I'm sure it varies but I've been in the Med in June and it still being chilly in the PM. From what I've seen average for that time is 22-24C for Athens. Humidity thing is always thrown around, and is often nonesense. It applies to tropical (hot and wet) places e.g. if playing in Malaysia or Brazil, and typically ties to precipitation. Ireland has higher humidity than most countries including Greece.

Greece have only played four home games in June in recent years. Two against Italy and Armenia in 2019, and two against Cyprus and Kosovo last summer It was 30 degrees against Italy: https://www.uefa.com/uefaeuro/match/2026090/ and 22 for the other three games |
