Had hear Russia could have lost up to 1000 men. Is that possible? Seems like all we are hearing about the last couple of days is Ukrainian counter offences and Russian losses. How long more can they possibly sustain this?

While the Russians have retreated further from Kharkiv they haven't been pushed all the way back to the border. They fell back to other defensive positions. Hopefully in the next week weeks they'll be pushed right back into Russia.

the institute for the study of war said yesterday that russia has run out of combat ready reservists. at the current rate of losses military experts and ukrainian intelligence expect the russian army to collapse at some point between june and september. when it happens it'll happen suddenly, they are running on fumes.

NYT- “…estimates based on publicly available evidence now suggesting that well over 400 Russian soldiers were killed or wounded while trying to cross the Donets River” this is likely to be a conservative figure, the true numbers may never be known. a lot of these lads are lying at the bottom of the river or were blown to bits. as i said in my previous comment if the war continues we're likely to see a russian army collapse in the next few months. they've lost strategically, the question is how bad will the collapse be if the war continues.

The Russians fairly settling in Kerson now issuing permits to residents. It won't be easy for Ukraine to retake this region. I'm starting to think not blowing up the bridges in the beginning of the invasion will prove to be a very costly mistake

Ruble at its highest level against the euro in over 6 years. Huge rebound from the initial fall after invasion.. Likely to surge further.

Due to countries having to buy Russian oil and gas in rubles. What happens when they no longer need to buy?

Ok I've woken up now tell me why it's boosted? Just so you know the rubble isn't actually worth a whole pile as it is. You're talking about a hundred of them for one euro. But do explain the increase and how it's going to fair when one of their biggest customers buys oil and gas elsewhere?

Where are all these infinite supplies of energy? Energy is a finite resource and Europe is heavily reliant on imports. How long will Europeans accept the massive increases in cost of living? The risevof the ruble against Western currencies suggests that Russia does hold some aces and that the sanctions have been withstood. Issue with sanctions is that eventually they start affect the countries applying the sanctions. Let's just hope we have a mild winter.

If the sanctions were effective, surely it should have continued to fall??

Putting capital controls on your currency will make it strong short term, but its not an effective strategy long term for the ruble to remain at its current level.
We are also right at the beginning of sanctions, the longer these go on a country who imports at the level Russia does will also see significant problems within its economy. Job security fear must be at an all time high.

explain to me the benefit of a strong ruble when russia's imports have completely and utterly collapsed, and the states main source of budget revenue is dollars from exporting oil and gas? a strong ruble means less money for budget.

European economy is surely at risk if there is long term sanctions on their primary energy provider? The average European worker is going to pay hard for these sanctions The sanctions caused a huge tumble in ruble initially. It is noteworthy how it has rebounded. That coupled with the skyrocketing inflation in Europe. Its not just Russia that will be affected. |

1. REPowerEU - just yesterday the european commission laid out plans to reduce consumption of russian gas across the bloc by 66% by the end of this year and break its dependence completely before 2027. how will it do this? by saving energy, finding alternate sources and speeding up the transition to renewables. google REPowerEU for the finer details. 2. 85% of europeans believe that the eu should reduce its dependency on russian gas and oil as soon as possible to support ukraine - the european commission 3. the ruble tumbled for a multitude of reasons linked to the invasion of ukraine. since you haven't answered my question i can tell you the strengthening of the russian currency is in part due to entities paying for russian energy in euros which the russians convert to rubles. as i previously stated this is not necessarily a good thing for russia.
