Yes, no idea how people thought he could have scored that, it bounced 2 foot over his head!

This is the content we come here for.
Should probably read before hitting enter. The main point was there was nothing he could do to score there and Murray was being ridiculous

You would need to be a cryptanalyst to make sense of your first post.

To be fair I couldn't make heads or tails of it myself on 2nd look LOL
Ferguson was decent. Movement is brilliant but some of the final ball to him was sloppy. Few times he was a simple pass away from being in. Had one chance late and should have hit it with his left but cut back and was disposessed.

Paul Rowan in The Times today.

Could Evan Ferguson go the same way as Declan Rice and Jack Grealish?

Ireland have to move fast to keep Brighton’s latest emerging talent away from England’s clutches

Brighton & Hove Albion are making a habit of producing the next big Ireland striker, but this time the brouhaha smacks of reality when it comes to the 18-year-old Evan Ferguson. It seems like only yesterday that we were flocking to the south coast to fete the arrival of the next Robbie Keane in the form of Aaron Connolly, and with Ferguson the comparisons have even stretched as far as Erling Haaland.

Far-fetched as that may sound, the comparison with the marauding Manchester City striker deserves dwelling on for a moment. Not, principally, because they are roughly of the same stature and share some common attributes when it comes to their aggression, physicality and poise in front of goal. Rather, it is because of the elevated territory that seems to come naturally to them and is perhaps even sown in their DNA.

Both of their fathers played professional football and suffered the vicissitudes of the game — Barry Ferguson when he was released by Coventry City as a teenager and Alfe-Inge Haaland, whose career was never the same after that infamous tackle in a Manchester derby in 2001 by a certain Roy Keane.

Their sons have eclipsed them when it comes to achievements on the pitch, but there is a level-headedness about them both which smacks of being pointed in the right direction and coming from what some football managers like to call a “good family”.

After scoring his second goal in consecutive Premier League games in the 4-1 victory over Everton at Goodison Park, Ferguson said all of the right things as he did his “man of the match” interview — and yet he still managed to sound engaged and interesting. Handling the hype and the pressure — not just from Ireland, but from around Brighton — seems to come naturally to this teenager, whereas there was always a question mark about whether Connolly could handle the fame game.

The Galwegian made an even more explosive impact than Ferguson at first. He scored twice on his full debut in a 3-0 home victory over Tottenham in 2019, but was clearly dazzled by the spotlight that followed, and had a particularly bad lockdown both for club and country, which highlighted a naivety and lack of discipline. Claims that he was reformed and had rid himself of some bad company, which he made before his summer loan move to Venezia, were treated with scepticism — particularly from those who knew him as an Ireland Under-21 player before his brush with the big time.

If all had gone well with the Serie B club Connolly might have earned a recall to Brighton, through the World Cup putting everything in the mix at the Amex Stadium — the Belgian Leandro Trossard has suffered a loss of form, while the Argentinian Alexis Mac Allister was late returning for obvious reasons. Instead, the Brighton manager Roberto De Zerbi turned to Ferguson, while Connolly has returned from Italy but has gone straight back out on loan, at Hull City.

We still hold a candle for Connolly, who remains an exciting talent as he turns 23 later this month, but the flame is flickering. Should Connolly do well at Hull, there could still be room for him back at Brighton, even though another young attacking Irish player, Andrew Moran, is also showing huge promise at the club. Brighton were four goals up at Goodison Park on Tuesday night when De Zerbi brought the 19-year-old Dubliner on with 11 minutes to go, but still it showed that Moran isn’t far behind in the manager’s mind.

There is an interesting discussion to be had centred around Ferguson; he was allowed to join Brighton as a 16-year-old, whereas his contemporaries at St Kevin’s Boys club in Dublin have to wait until they’re 18; an English mother and eligibility for a British passport meant the post-Brexit restrictions didn’t apply to Ferguson and had he stayed in Ireland it is most probable that his development wouldn’t have been anything like as rapid. However, that is a debate for another day, particularly if you are the Ireland manager Stephen Kenny and are planning a surprise for the first European Championship qualifying game against France in March.

Should Ferguson’s rate of progress continue exponentially, Ireland could have a rival for his services in the shape of England. Ferguson has two senior Ireland caps already, but Declan Rice had three before he made the switch to England and looked like he was forever wedded to the boys in green, having come through all of the under-age sides. Rice’s change of heart is still sorely felt by Ireland, but it would be a far greater shock were Ferguson to go the same way and become the first player with a strong Dublin accent to play for England.

While there is no indication that Ferguson would consider such a move and those close to him dismiss the idea, the England Under-21 manager and former Ireland international, Lee Carsley, is watching and wondering. The FA in London is also refusing to be drawn on the matter.

Even playing Ferguson in a competitive game won’t tie him down because of his age, but Kenny nonetheless will be minded to integrate him further in the Ireland set up. The latest Irish striking downturn, post-Robbie Keane — Troy Parrott, Michael Obafemi and Callum Robinson are all struggling for different reasons — makes the case for Ferguson’s increasing involvement all the more compelling.

In an ideal world Ferguson would prosper for Ireland, ably assisted by Connolly. Brighton wouldn’t be complaining, either.

Is this why there's a rush go get caps into him  ?

And is it why there's no rush to get caps into Hodge  ? Because he won't accept them.

One is ours to keep. One is ours to lose.

Yup, Southgate was caught standing outside his house boombox held in the air playing Careless Whisper hoping to woo him into playing for England.

Admits it has been dismissed by people close to him. Then says England U21 coach is watching but subtly you know he has no clue if he is or isn't and FA won't speak about it. Just sees his mother is English and looks for attention.
An embarrassing article out of Rowan filled with sh*te.

It was absolutely woeful. I saw the headline and expected to see something early in the article with references to a source telling him something about the FA and Ferguson. Nothing else made sense. All we got were a few columns about Ferguson's progress and then a final column filled with speculation. The article would be more at home in a tabloid.

His other Irish football article was strange too yesterday. He pulled some recent quote from Tam McManus about Stephen Kenny. Then stated that he had reached out to McManus to elaborate on his quote but McManus wouldn't oblige. So Rowan then regurgitated a load pieces from an article McManus spoke to the Daily Record for and used it to speculate whether the Irish players were buying what Kenny was selling. It is well over two years old.

This is the article and it is actually a positive message being conveyed ultimately by McManua. Reading the Times article you'd think he was just disparaging Kenny and implying he wouldn't hack it https://www.dailyrecord.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/inside-eccentric-methods-new-ireland-21817561?int_source=amp_continue_reading&int_medium=amp&int_campaign=continue_reading_button#amp-readmore-target

If he's going to publish something like that he really needs to have more behind it than Ferguson's mother being English. Especially when he contradicts himself half way down the article and says he has no intention to do anything of the sort.

As for this part -

The FA in London is also refusing to be drawn on the matter.

This is just a standard PR department blank the journalist response, we issue these all the time in our organisation.

Can you provide confirmation of whether you are planning to poach Evan Ferguson from Ireland?

We are refusing to be drawn on the matter.

Can you provide confirmation of whether you are planning to poach Marcus Harness from Ireland?

We are refusing to be drawn on the matter.

Etc.

We'll obviously cap him against France if he's fit and that will put an end to anything like this anyway.
