Taylor was awful tonight. But looking through the Celtic forums, while there is pretty much universal agreement among their supporters that Taylor is useless, surprisingly few think Scales is the answer to their problems at left back.

Being honest, they'll have seen a lot more of him since he went there than I have - if they don't think he's an upgrade on Taylor that's probably a sign that he's not the answer for us at this point either.

Scales best position is LWB, not LB and thats where he'd be playing for us.

His main attribute is his attacking threat and ability to drive forward rather than his defensive capabilities which can be questionable at times.

A bit like Doherty playing RB in a flat back 4 compared to RWB with a back 3.

They can both do a shift there but they can be vulnerable and exposed at times while also having their best attribute effectively removed in favor of their defensive duties.

If his defensive capabilities are questionable against Ross County, St Johnstone and Livingston he'll  struggle against Scotland, Ukraine and Armenia?

Scales has played plenty at centre back as well as left wing back, so left back really shouldn't be a problem for him. I don't think he's anywhere near to Doherty's standard at this point in time. Even Doherty switching across on his weaker side, he's still well ahead of Scales for now.

At times being the key word and thats when deployed at LB where he has that responsibility.

I've no idea how he plays in Scotland on weekly basis but I've watched him close enough for Rovers, UCD and the u21s over the last 5 years to know what kind of player he is and his best position.

As I said, at LWB he doesn't have the same defensive responsibility as a LB and thats where he'd be playing for us.

Put it this way, hes better than McClean is at defending who is starting for us in the same role.

But it is, as I said he can fill in if needed in both those roles but they're not his best position.

I wasnt comparing him to Doherty either, you missed my point there. I was comparing Dohertys ability when playing at RB to when played at RWB to that of Scales when played at LB and LWB. It suits neither of them. Their biggest assests are their attacking threat and ability to get forward rather than defending in a flat back 4 where they dont get over the half way line, where they have to defend a lot more over 90 minutes and are at times exposed.

Ange's solution to the left back issue today seems to have been to move Juranovic across to left back, drop Taylor to the bench and leave Scales out of the match day squad completely.

Might be due to his attacking style of play. They need goals. Either way good to see.

Been watching the game here and he looks a bit too slow, immobile and flat footed to become a first team regular for Celtic. He’ll probably be a squad/fringe player for the foreseeable future unless there’s a serious improvement.

Not sure he's an option for us as a left wing back unfortunately. Possibly would be better focusing on playing centre back, but we have loads of those so he won't be much use to us there either. It's a pity because I've always liked him as a player in Ireland, but this seems like too much of a step up for him unfortunately.

Hes no centre back. He doesn't look inferior really to any of the other Celtic players if you ask me. He looks a decent attacker. Can score. I think he could have a decent career outside the LOI wherever he evtually ends up if its not at Celtic.

Shocking last night along with a number of his teammates. Thought James McCarthy did more in 5mins than Bitton did in 90.

At least McCarthy got on in the second half tonight but he seems to be a bit player as far as Ange is concerned.
