So there’s no Irish teams in the Europa League. That’s a bit of a bollox.

The winner from Linfield Vs Fola Esch will face the loser between Kairat Almaty (Kazakhstan) or Alashkert FC (Armenia) in the playoff round of the Europa Conference League. Just like shamrock rovers it proves the champions path is a lot easier route for Irish clubs.

Jesus, it's the best part of 4,000 miles from Belfast to Almaty, and even Yerevan is 2,500 miles away! Either will take a huge chunk out of Linfield's prize money. I hope.
True enough. But as against that, UEFA should surely have retained an element of regionalisation for the third round draw, as they had for the first (and second?) rounds, to avoid the easternmost team in the competition meeting the westernmost. Either that or tell Kazakhstan to sod off back to the Asian Confederation, where they belong.

Larne conceded right before the break in hilarious fashion against Pacos Ferreira. Utterly dreadful goalkeeping. |

Really enjoying this competition. Some propper old school European games between proper football clubs.

A lot of criticism given to this competition from the prem fans but it is absolutely brilliant for our league.

How so? As far as I can tell our teams enter at the EXACT same stages of a lesser competition, are up against the EXACT same opposition and are earning LESS money than what they would have been if they were still in the Europa League. The single and only "benefit" I can see is that the LOI Champions can get a bye into the 3rd round if they lose their CL Qualifier where as they'd have previously dropped into the EL 2nd round. Not a massive benefit, really. If this was last year, Bohs and Dundalk would have been in 3rd Round of the EL with a good chance Rovers could have been too pending who they'd drawn. Our teams progress in Europe this year has nothing to do with the format of the new competition. The whole Conference League nonsense is nothing but a dressed up ploy from UEFA to squeeze out the smaller nations yet again. I really wish a few people would read into it, the lads on LOI Weekly and Cawleys Call were lauding it as good thing for Irish football and were pretty oblivious to it too. |

Prize money (per game) is exactly the same & we’re not playing the exact teams we would’ve in the Europa. That said, I do agree it was created to appease the bigger clubs than the smaller clubs and makes it even more impossible for us to have a make the champions league group stages or Europa league group stages

Let's be honest, our clubs are not ready for the EL yet (Rovers possibly are, but the rest aren't). 2 qualifications for the group stages in 5 years does not change that. The ultimate long-term goal is obviously consistent qualification for group stages, but that's a pipe dream at the moment. It gives our teams a platform to showcase their abilities to a wider audience (if RTE/Virgin could be bothered). It gives the talented young players in our league an opportunity they wouldn't get playing under 23's football at an EPL or Championship club, before being discarded when their contracts expire. Players will attract interest from clubs in other leagues, and the clubs will hopefully reinvest this money into their academies/facilities to maintain long-term success. Bohs have earned about 850k after 2 rounds. Any club qualifying for the group stages stands to make 2-3 million. It may be a lesser competition as UEFA look to make the EL more exclusive , but it's a massive incentive for our clubs. My biggest criticism of this competition is clubs, after 3 rounds of qualifying, now need a play-off to reach the group stages. The most immediate goal for the clubs is to benefit from the finances involved in this lesser competition. As for wishing a few people would read into it, the same applies to yourself seeing as you didn't know the money on offer was the same as the EL. |
