Stephen Kenny trusted our younger players and it didn't work out the way we hoped it would. Ferguson hasn't really transferred his club form to us either (referring specifically to when he was playing really well for Brighton). None of which is to absolve O'Shea when it comes to not giving lads like O'Brien, Ebosele and MacNulty a chance.
On paper we should be a better team than Northern Ireland but watching them recently against teams like Romania they look like a way more cohesive unit and are a comparative joy to watch. Who we get as manager is more crucial than promoting Vata and Lawal and hoping they show more than lads who have been playing one or two divisions above them. Which is why it'll be a disaster if we appoint O'Shea. We need someone like Michael O'Neill. If that means we have to settle for a pound shop O'Neill in Neil Lennon, so be it.

I've been thinking for months we need to integrate him. A good young defender who whilst being a natural CB seems like he is making it work at LB very well. We need to be so much better at integrating young players with high potential even outside of getting multinationals on board. Wales have done it really well for years and NI are bringing through a solid core of young players who have will have played and developed together for several years which will end up much better for them than it would of otherwise. We bring a young player in a we don't trust them until they are about 25 or are expected to be levels above everyone and when their inexperience shows we write them off.
As far as I'm concerned he's one of the best options for LB we have. Then play one of our more mobile CBs at RB and we sort out the pesky full back/wingback problem we have and use our better players which are CBs. Maybe not ideal but would probably be no worse defensively than our back 5 and our current WB options don't contribute creatively and with goals enough which they need to to make that system work. So 4 CBs sounds fine to me until Ebosele is playing more consistently and we get a few of the likes of Curtis, Adaramola, Murphy etc through. Edited by SC92 - 04 May 2024 at 4:27pm |

Yup have to show foresight Wales and N.I do it a million times better than us. We need to see Conor Bradley start ahead of Trent before we can bring him in ahead of Doherty for example. It’s a joke. Minute Garcia McNulty moves to Real Betis or Leicester (which he’s been linked to) let’s say Spain are gonna start taking note and zero effort has been made by us to get him into the squad prior to that.

Wouldn't have been a bad idea to have him around the squad on merit for the games against Belgium's C team and Switzerland if he would've been amenable to a call up.
The links to bigger sides in bigger leagues keep getting stronger. The idea of someone like him playing for Spain isn't as outlandish as it would've been years ago and he's already batted his eyelashes at them. Another own goal for the O'Shea interim reign.

Southampton reported today to be interested in signing him. The other two Championship clubs previously interested were Leicester and Leeds. Leicester at least will be in the PL next season, one or both of the other two might be.

Spanish report saying that while Betis have been keeping an eye on him there's a possibility if he signs he can go out on loan to another Spanish team. But does say he'll be given the chance to impress first as both senior LBs could leave this summer.

Not to be predictable but hope he avoids the Championship love it as a league but however competitive it is I think we would be better off with players in a variety of leagues. Based on O'Brien and Ebosele's experience though it's probably easier to get capped that way though.
Brugge an interesting one not as good as the league he is in now bit would get european experience and it's a popular 'selling' clubs of young players to bigger clubs. Of course Betis would be ideal with the strength of the league and it's club he developed at. But it's a big step upwards and hard to know if he would get enough gametime.

Scored his first ever senior goal in a 2-1 win against Excelsior tonight. (Parrott was still out injured)

Because hes a promising 20 year old doing well in his second season of senior football, its not that much of a stretch given the examples above. IF they had as much talent coming through in defense as they do midfield, sure, admittedly it'd be very unlikely. But when they're relying on a 27 year old from a mid table La Liga side declaring for them to be their first choice LB, then you can see why it could be likely if MacNultys career was to continue his upward trajectory. A move back to Betis or a club of that level in La Liga and he'd 100% be in the frame when theres lads from Osasuna, Socidad etc.. making the Spanish squad. Gone are the days of the Spanish squad being almost entirely made up of players from prime Real and Barca teams.

Bazunu, Collins and Ferguson would all have the potential to play for Spain one day if they were eligible. GK, CB and ST are areas that they are weak in. Our midfielders wouldn't get a game for their U21s though.

We are talking about a player playing at a low level and likely will never be even average at that ltype of level. We have 0 players that could play for Spain I don't get why people think this particular player is the one who could. Beyond his natiinal ties. I hope he does but can't see it personally

Its an area they're far from blessed in, they're still playing a 38 year old Jesus Navas at RB and they had to get La Normand and Laporte to declare for them.

He is n9t getting anywhere near the Spanish team lads. He is a good young player not anywhere near the elite team level.

I doubt he has either. From reading up on his background it's either Ireland or Spain for him. |

Thanks for clarifying. Wasn't sure. In any case, I'm fairly certain his senior career will be with us, which Spain might well end up regretting a few years down the line.

I don't think it ever crossed his mind to play for Austria. Just an illustration of how multiple national eligibility can be in this day and age.

Unless he had his Austrian citizenship sorted back in 2019 before he played in the U17 Euros he becomes ineligible for Austria next month when he plays another game for us.
