Have The EIRE ever come back from a  2 goal deficit in (i) Their history (ii) the last 35-40 years
to draw 2-2 or win?

Not sure but we've done the opposite a few times - i.e led 2-0 and ended up drawing 2-2. Against the Dutch in WC 2002 qualifying and Israel in WC 2006 qualifying both immediately spring to mind.

Pedantry Alert!

If it has never happened, or only very rarely, then it is not an "anomaly", rather it is the norm:

Anomaly

  • noun: Deviation or departure from the normal or common order, form, or rule.

Closest I remember was the Russia game in 2010 where we were 0-3 down at home and got it back to 2-3 in a funny game!

Its normal for international teams to at some stage int heir history to have come back from 2 goals down at some stage.  I'm sure even the likes of Slovenia or Estonia have come back from 2-0 down at least once.

Another anomaly is we extremely rarely go 2-0 up on teams of any decent standard and if we win its 1-0.  Holland 2000, Turkey 1991, Poland 1991?  (can't remember if we went 2-0 up in that 3-3 draw).  We can beat minnows like Tuaisceart Eireann 3-0 or 4-0 but that doesn't count as it has to be decent opposition at the time.

Apart from the 7-0 win against Gibraltar in 2014, I am convinced that our upper limit in terms of goals scored is 5. Since the Charlton era, it was the upper limit, even against some really woeful teams (1990s Lichtenstein, San Marino), and that we almost stepped down once we hit five.

This is the best list I can come up with. There may be other games if any one can think of them.

1958, v Poland, 2-0 down, drew 2-2

1959, v Sweden, 2-0 down, won 3-2, Johnny Giles with a wonder goal on his debut to start the comeback

1964, v Poland, 2-0 down, won 3-2

1968, v Poland, 2-0 down, drew 2-2

1968, v Austria, 2-0 down, drew 2-2

1979, v USA, 2-0 down, won 3-2, three goals in four minutes

1982, v Spain, 3-1 down, drew 3-3

2000, v Mexico, 2-0 down, drew 2-2

special mentions:

1934, v Hungary, 2-0 down, lost 4-2 after getting it back to 2-2

1973, All-Ireland XI v Brazil, 4-1 down, lost 4-3

2010, v Russia, 3-0 down, lost 3-2

games when a 2 goal lead was lost:

v West Germany, 1951, won 3-2

v Turkey, 1976, drew 3-3

v Denmark, 1978, drew 3-3

v Holland, 1983, lost 3-2

In terms of playing style, 18th November 2009 was certainly an anomaly.

The match finishing 1-1 on the night, was not.

We beat Malta 8-0 in 1983, it was a dead rubber

Malta then lost 12-1 to Spain the next month, eliminating Holland - it was 3-1 at half time and Spain needed the 11 goal margin

The win over Gibraltar was strange because we were 7-0 up early in the second half of that game, and didn't score any more goals. Two more and we would have broken our record score.

And the 8-0 over Malta was a high point. It took us another 15 or 16 games to score 8 more goals.

That was because they replaced the sheet of paper they had in nets with a human.

And we had a proper striker who scored a HT within 20 mins
Hoolahan was very good that day too.

They both went off around 60 mins and we didn’t score again.

Yeah Spain in 82 came to mind.

Kevin O’Callaghan had a stormer if I remember correctly and was rewarded with a part in Escape to Victory as the goalkeeper.

Didn't they break his arm in order to let Stallone play in goal?

Proof that it was proper football back then, when players made any and every sacrifice for the jersey. No millionaires, just honest pros, like Pele, liberating France with an overhead kick.

It's a little known fact that they actually broke his arm during filming to make it more realistic.
