The result that is most beloved of Irish football is the 1-1 victory
It is the result that is most in keeping with our national character A classic 1-1 victory plays out as follows: We are playing a big away qualifier or a finals match We go behind early on and look outclassed, but somehow don't fall further behind The longer the game goes on, the more the traditional Irish fighting spirit comes to the fore And then, at some point in the last 20 minutes, a bolt from the blue, an equaliser arrives Such a match is typically accompanied by a memorable facial expression pulled by a player or the manager - which will be later immortalised in an RTE montage - or a memorable commentary line It is typically symbolised by an Irish lionheart, a Mick McCarthy, a Kevin Moran, a Paul McGrath, a Steve Staunton, a Richard Dunne, a John O'Shea, a Shane Duffy The one constant in all Ireland's great 1-1 victories is Mr. George Hamilton We celebrate as if we have won, which we have On this poll I am restricted to eight choices But this does not do justice to the depth of this genre I've had to leave out so many classic 1-1 victories Left on the shelf are: England 1990 at Lansdowne Road Denmark 1993 The night in Belfast when Alan McLoughlin scored Cameroon 2002 Poland 2015 Bosnia 2015 Austria 2017 Denmark 2019 Switzerland 2019 The Czech Republic at Lansdowne Road in 2006, the last game I ever attended at the famous old stadium, was a 1-1 victory, even though we briefly led, amid one of the most raucous atmospheres at the stadium in modern times And then there's Paris 2009, the ultimate 1-1 defeat, but smothered in moral victory, it is in a category all of its own Then there are the lesser spotted 0-0 and 2-2 victories 0-0 victories were: Denmark 1992 Spain 1992 Norway 1994 France 2004 Russia 2011 Sweden 2013 Denmark 2017 Belgium away in 1986 is the classic 2-2 victory Holland 2000 deviates from the script a bit in that we led 2-0 but was celebrated like a victory Italy 2009 at Croke Park was a sort of 2-2 victory Vote early for your favourite 1-1 victory, vote often Edited by sid waddell - 21 Oct 2020 at 2:20pm |

I have voted for Germany 2002
It had all the elements We were supposedly a rabble after the Irish football civil war We fell behind early against a footballing superpower who would go on to outclass us, and we stared down the barrel of elimination Our fighting spirit came to the fore, but we missed chances, and our chance had gone Until the proverbial bolt from the blue A memorable facial expression became an indelible part of folklore The RTE studio panel was in its pomp and Eamon Dunphy was on top form The country spent the afternoon and evening and night drinking it out of dirty boot in celebration And the whole thing was wrapped up in a memorable RTE montage soundtracked by "Acquiesece" by Oasis, which played for the following six days That 1-1 victory, like the Treaty, gave us the freedom to go on and achieve an actual victory, which we did in the next match

Yeah the 1-1 with Germany in 2002 was both the most impressive and most important.
Impressive because it came against the side that went on to be in the final, and important because it meant that all we were required to do in the final group game was beat a terrible Saudi side to guarantee progress.

Agreed. It was the only goal Germany conceded on their way to the final.

Both the German ones were probably the most impressive. Germany being world champions and at home in 2014.
But the occasion of Germany 2002 and what it meant in basically preventing us from being out of competition, the celebrations, etc. it was definitely our best 1-1 victory

Performance wise I reckon it's between Russia in '88, England in '91 and Germany in '02. If we're including extra time, the France game in '09 also has to be in with a shout, although losing the tie obviously takes the gloss of that one.

The best 1-1s are the games in which the opponent doesn’t recognize our game as playing football at all. 1-1 v the Dutch at italia 90 is the best possible. The quality of their team, their arrogance, and the brutal equalizer from Bonner and Quinn. Perfect

There was a distinctly upbeat tone after it as there was a widespread view beforehand that we could be in for a thrashing First place had already gone, but second place felt more likely after it We should have got something that night

1991 against England in Wembley 1-1. Niall Quinn scored and Ray Houghton missed a great chance towards the end. Jimmy Hill wrote us off before the game and at half-time. Terry Venables basically asked Jimmy was he watching the same game as the rest of the punters etc. Ireland were brilliant. Paul McGrath was awesome. Mick McCarthy sent Gazza into space with a typical tackle. Mcgrath hit Gazza with another bruiser - game over for him. I was in the main stand among a group of Irish business men who hadn't a clue what was going on. The one chant that got all of us fans going was "you'll never beat the Irish".
Needless to say, I had a go at the yuppies beside me, and eventually they joined in. Met Brian Kerr on the way out and later at a great function organised by the London RISSC in Nelly's of Willesden Green. He was very impressed with that performance. Been to a lot of drawn games, but the result and atmosphere at that game was incredible.

In 2nd place - 1-1 v Denmark at home in qualifier for USA 94. Without that draw we were toast and the game in Belfast would have been meaningless. In first p!ace, the 1-1 with the Dutch in Palermo. Without that there would have been no Walkinstown Roundabout and the nation wouldn't have held its breath. Ole, Ole, Ole, Ole..

Neither Mick McCarthy nor Gazza played McCarthy was injured, I don't think Gazza could have been, he was in his pomp with Spurs in the FA Cup at the time McGrath got booked for chopping Bryan Robson from behind in the first half Gazza didn't play at Lansdowne either, Taylor put Sid Cowans in in place of him I think Taylor felt that Gazza could not handle the pressure I think that was a crazy decision but at the same time what Gazza did in the FA Cup final shortly afterwards sort of proved Taylor right |
