42nd goal for France for Olivier Giroud now. He overtakes Michel Platini as the second top goal scorer in France’s history, 9 goals behind Thierry Henry now.

He was actually playing league 2 up to 23 years old.
Never played for France youth teams and got his first senior cap at 25.
He has done very well to achieve so much in the game.

Has Beckham been mentioned? If he was average looking lad or looked like Rooney do ya think he would be as famous? Good crosser and decent free kicks was about it.

Surprised no one has mentioned Paul Scoholes.

So he kept me soul for ransom.

If we are going back along then Stevie Me/Hollywood. Media darling over here, so was never criticised, but 300 shots a game, loved a dive, tackled worse than Scholes and was only world class at running about a bit. In fairness, he was brilliant at running about a bit, as long as it wasn't backwards.LOL

Somehow forgot about Gerrard, definitely overrated.

Deschamps was overrated too! Can see why he plays Giroud so often.

Deschamps was very limited, but knowing his limitations got him a decent career. I think he is the sort of player coaches and managers love as he is their voice on the pitch.

Peter Schmeichel, especially when spoken of in terms of the "Greatest Ever".

In fact, I there are a lot of keepers that have their abilities aggrandised by fans and commentators when there are external factors preventing them from having their flaws come to light.

Interesting call on Deschamps, which I'd agree with.

I never go for this "greatest ever" nonsense as there's too many players across too many eras but Schmeichel was in no way overrated. He was a world class goalkeeper who commanded his box and would run and catch dangerous crosses beyond the 6 yard box which you don't really see today. Absolute world class even if he was a bit shaky in his earlier days.

My username will indicate bias but he is the best goalkeeper I've ever seen hands down.

Ya Schmeichel was overrated. Are you mixing him up with his son cause you must be.

Not such a great recommendation, goalkeepers don't save much with their hands down

If I was making a world 11 he would be my keeper. No question even.

Played to the crowd a bit... ended up with a shiner from the boy Roy.

Gary Bailey just as good but the lads back then liked getting pished too much in Paddy Crerand's pub in Altrincham...should have broke the 1967 hoodoo before Fergie's era.

You can't argue with what Didier Deschamps has done in football

World Cup winning captain, World Cup winning manager, European Cup winning captain

Only Monaco losing the European Cup final in 2004 when he was manager prevented him from having the full set

He is a FOOTBALL MAN
