There are lots of players who looked good underage but just weren’t up to snuff or peaked early. Lightening quick wingers or anybody with a penchant for the spectacular have a tendency to go off the boil.

Players who really could play a bit, but went downhill because of a number of issues: Tommie Hoban at Watford, Mark O’Brien at Derby, Chris Forrester at Pats/Peterborough, Conor Henderson at Arsenal, Michael Reddy at Sunderland, Liam George at Luton.

Graham Barrett is one that sticks out in my mind.

Richie Partridge- he was an underage star at Liverpool and many of the Liverpool players said he would be the next big thing.

I guess you could name a few of the other Irish players that won the European U18’s.

Thanks. I was trying to think of him earlier and was wreckin my head

With Joe O'Cearuill I think it was just the novelty of Arsenal signing him led to the hype, his talents were always more non league level. Stokes is the only one of the great hyped ones I genuinely envisioned making it big, he was a similar level at 18 to Parrot now but seriously underachieved.
Should have made allowance for his personal nature though which never did him any favours.

Thought Liam Miller (RIP) was going to be mainstay for us but just didn't work out.

Oh and Reid could have achieved a lot more in his career if he'd been able to stay away from Burger King. Looked an awesome talent as a teenager.

Darren Potter. Played six times in the Champions League for Liverpool and ended up a mediocre lower league player.

Paul Byrne of Celtic. Looked a talent. Scored twice in old Old Firm games. One a spectacular goal. Was talked about as a possible for the '94 World Cup.

Ended up back in Ireland in fairly short order.

title of the thread should be changed. An outdated phrase that is out of place in modern Ireland and in this context.

An old boxing phrase when it looked like there was no way a white boxer could beat Jack Johnson is not applicable here imo.

There are a ton of players who have played senior international games for us and have not yet reached the level that they are capable of.

Robbie Brady, Pilklington, Keith O’Neill, Anthony Stokes, Keith Fahey...

Robbie Brady is perhaps one of the most gifted players we’ve had, but he hasn’t made any progress since 2016

There was huge hype about Stokes.  I remember going to watch him in an under-15 International at Whitehall I think.

He may have been a long way off greatness, but Potter still played a lot of his career in the Championship/towards the top of L1. Calling him a "lower league player" is a bit of a disservice.

Even up to a few years ago, I would have said he could have a premier league career if he pulled his finger out. He really is just a perfect example of how easy it is to f**k up your own life
