So how close do you think you could have got to that cherished England cap Matthew?

At least he played and didn't pull out of squads and complete 90 mins for  club less than 48 hours later. And at least he didn't walk out on us at international tournaments.

I liked Holland as a player, he always gave 100% for us on the field and that's what matters. I could not care less about the' ' God Save The Queen' thing-remember Declan 'Up The Ra' Rice singing ' The Soldier's Song' and kissing the badge? Holland gave as much to Ireland as Kilbane, Breen and others.

Absolutely agree on the above. His goal against Portugal in the 1-1'draw in that WC qualifying campaign was sweet. The one he got against the Cameroon was a very similar type of goal (and also an equaliser if I am not mistaken).

Formed a good partnership with Kinsella in midfield.

His goal against Cameroon helped change the mood of the 2002 tournament.

We had had the self-destruction in Saipan, followed by an awful first-half against the Africans. When that goal went in everything changed and we really should have beaten Cameroon. We got the National Result, but at least the World Cup wasn't over before it began.

So it is weird to see people sl*gging him off, when he was a good player for Ireland.
