But did it have to be either/or? Cantona’s position in the team could have been more advanced. I also believe Cantona’s mentality was significantly different by Euro ‘96. He was much more of a leader, with a good awareness of working with young and developin players.

At the 1998 World Cup, when England players were scrambling to insert song titles by a particular artist into interviews, Alan Shearer, who was inserting Phil Collins song titles into his, was asked by Ray Stubbs for his thoughts on Aime Jacquet stepping down as France manager after the tournament. "I guess you say it's a case of No Jacquet Required, Stubbsy", said the England captain.
Also, this did not actually happen.

Alan Shearer's favourite flick to kick table football game is Sussudio. He said the England team had a lot of spirit, a lot of heart, some players even had two hearts. Every day you're at the World Cup is Another Day in Paradise. But sadly for David Batty it was a case of "I Missed Again".

In 1990, there was 13 European spots + Italy. Today, there is still 13 European spots. Europe is the powerhouse of the game, and therefore should have seen at least a small increase in 30 years. Instead there's been none at all, while every other region has seen their allocation at the WC balloon. That can't be right. The current Euro format is one of Platini's pet projects. I love the 24 team format, as it means if the first two games go wrong, you can still nick a third place spot in the last game, not booking the first flight home. But playing it all over Europe was done so that all the infrastructure needed would already exist for us travelling from everywhere. Well now we have the infrastructure, but we can't travel anywhere. The pet project has gone wrong, but Platini is long gone. Edited by planning - 14 May 2020 at 2:29pm |

Who had the best kits ? Refresh your memories here:

I'm naturally biased as to who I think had the best Love that dark tartan theme. It was my first ever football kit too. Denmark had quite a nice one. Romania's is hypnotic. |

A very poor selection at what was still, just, a great age for shirts. Sorry ET, not a fan of that Scotland one at all. Denmark win by default.

82-94 is the real golden age. Adults started buying them and it was just before mass commercialisation. There were still some great ones up until around 2000, but that showing in '96 was poor. Especially as there are teams there who had beauties previously.

I'd shorten that to 1984-90: France 1984
West Germany 1988/90 Holland 1988 Cameroon 1990 Barcelona of that era Argentina any World Cup between 1978 and 1990. Always liked the 1985 Manchester United kit as well, the one Whiteside wore when he scored the winner in Cup final. After 1990 things got a bit sh*t, Adidas lost the plot after 1990 anyway when they started putting massive stripes on the shoulder and down the sides and changed their logo though the Umbro kits of the early Premier League era were good. The late 1970s Liverpool kit with a white v neck made by Umbro is the definitive classic Liverpool kit. Nike have always been terrible, Borussia Dortmund of the 1990s were some of the few decent Nike kits. Hummel's kits for Denmark were generally great but I am not a fan of that 1986 one, it reminds me too much of Southampton. |

The 1996 kits seemed like a mock up of the 1994 ones, with a few stripes added here and there.
England’s jersey from 1994-1995 was incredibly smart. Edited by Het-field - 14 May 2020 at 4:07pm |

It was the first one that came to mind when I saw it wasn't on your list above. Both home and away jerseys were lovely.

Can't say whose was best, but no question whose was worst: Seaman's effort was hallucinogenic. As in LSD hallucinogenic. EDIT: Can't seem to upload my original photo, which also showed the full shorts, but clicking on this link might do it? https://i0.wp.com/www.clothes2order.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2013/03/david-seaman.jpg?w=380&ssl=1 (The shorts didn't help, btw) Edited by Territorial - 14 May 2020 at 4:57pm |

England had different jerseys in 1994 and 1995. Up to end of 1994 they wore the one they wore in the latter part of the failed World Cup qualification campaign under Graham Taylor. The one they wore in Euro '96 debuted in March 1995. They wore a red kit at Lansdowne Road in February. |
