+1 The players weren't all raised by corporate sponsors, only the really big games were treated as such. Actual tackles! People with a genuine love of the team watching it and having a connection with the players and the game hadn't become robotic and trained within an inch of their lives, so sometimes you saw a defender get beaten and didn't have fourteen pundits discuss why he got beaten from 57 different viewpoints. Pundits not talking about it it like it was Brexit or any other major issue but football, which they knew was really important, but not that important. I miss loving the game, instead of being in love with it and hating it.

Watched the game with England from Italia 90 last night. First time in years. Possibly 20. Anyway, utter pig spunk in terms of quality but still loved it. The atmosphere, the players, the World Cup

Funny what i can remember from the night .
Now i do recall drinking before the game in a small bar where you had to go down a back street and in the back door . I was all set to go back to the campsite that night after the game then was told the ferry to Sicily was going to be held back so bolted back to the campsite packed up back to town and dropped my backpack in left luggage . I remember about 100 English trying to murder anyone in Green on the way to the ground i saw one girl get hit by a car as trying to get out of the way of them , poor kid was limping every time i saw her afterwards . As for the game recall very little if i am honest now remember the goal and the rain and the sad bunch of English fans at the end of the game . I was on the boat maybe 200 Irish were on in and everyone headed to the bar they had a TV and they showed the goals , boy who put the ball in the English net .............. Some night . That was the first time i have seen the game since the night itself boy poor football or what not liked anyone really cared .

I was sitting with about 100 irish fans on a grass mound close to stadium as we had gotten cans from shops that weren't supposed to be selling alcohol.
The English had met at the train station I think and marched on block to the stadium. Unfortunately that was en route to where we were. We could see all the National Front tops off skin heads up the front. "NO SURRENDER TO THE IRA". We started singing something like "IF YOU HATE THE QUEEN OF ENGLAND"... they ran at us and we just got as quick out of there as we coukd. Luckily they had run up a hill. They were nasty vicious f**kers and gave a few Paddies a few punches and kicks. There was a lot of tension that time because of Provo bombing campaign in England.

The worst game at a WC was Switzerland v Ukraine in 2006. In 1990, Uruguay v South Korea, Cameroon v Colombia, England v Belgium, and Argentina v Yugoslavia were games only suitable for bitesize highlights. The offside rule was changed after the tournament. The backpass rule was brought in 2 years later.

Didn't know it wasn't on in the UK. Was definitely on on RTE, France were superb in it.

Was it not the case they only showed the final live ? And showed the rest as highlights only

The Brits showed two games live plus highlights. Pretty sure RTE showed more than that, can remember the semis and can remember the Danes standing out in the group stage as well as Platini running amok goal wise. |

Wasn't that the time Dunphy said Platini wasn't a great player?

Would be like Dunphy to come out with that in a five game tournament where Platini scored 9 from midfield alright!

I'm nearly certain it was before the final that year he said it. He definitely said it, it is on one of the many Dunphy YouTube compilations.

Yes, apart from the final group games when they were play simultaaneously, RTE showed all of Euro 84 live. And thank god for that as, living in Newry, I wouldn't have been able to watch what turned out to be a brilliant tournament otherwise.

France v Portugal in '84 was one of the greatest international games of all time. John Motson's commentary is suitably excited, especially for Platini's winning goal.
The crowd and the colour and the atmosphere are indivisible from the match. You don't get occasions like that now, because you don't get crowds and venues now like Marseille was that night, they're all played in boring FIFA land or UEFA land.

I remember watching that semi (France v Portugal) with my brother as a 7 year old and thought it was the most exciting thing I ever saw. Watched highlights of it last week with my 12 year old and it completely stands up. Brilliant, brilliant match - would have it as possibly the best game I ever saw. Platini was great but Tigana was out of this world. And yes, Motsons commentary for the winner (which I half think I remember live - any chance they showed the semis live in the uk?) captures the excitement perfectly.

No, the only games live in the UK were Spain v Germany and the final according to that guardian piece above. The match was live on RTE with highlights on BBC later that night. It was an absolute cracker of a game.
