In both games the referees have been awful. Whistle happy but suddenly silent when there's a foul in the box.
And Aldridge's header looked on-side. It's also interesting to see how teams have done so little against us. England got an early lead and never really attempted to pass the ball after that. Even though they had Barnes, Gascoigne and Waddle on the field. Holland were a bit better but you'd have expected much more. And where was Van Basten playing? A lethal striker and he had no impact in our box. In neither game have we had much composure. Strikers getting the ball stuck under their feet or shooting off balance, or hit and hope shots from the midfield. And the Dutch goal came from a completely unnecessary foul by McCarthy. For a long ball team we weren't that great at the tactic. I thought this was more recent phenomenon, but looking back at these games, we didn't use the tactic very well, especially against England, and were ultimately bailed out by the opposition in both games. And you also have to say that the atmosphere looked amazing.

Ireland v Soviet Union 1974 on RTE 2 now....had to laugh at photographers coming into the pitch to take pictures during breaks in play. No fancy goal celebrations in them days either

Insane stuff. I know Dalymount held more fans back then but the stand opposite the camera and the goal end opposite the shed just seem way bigger. Was there a redevelopment of Dalymount that scaled down the stands after the move to Lansdowne? |

A 30,000 capacity stadium in Dalymount would be something else and would more than cover us for most games.

was at both these games. The '74 game was Liam Brady's debut.. was in the Connaught St. side. Mad the crowd swaying and and no-one got injured even though it was rammed. The lads onthe shed was common place back then. ~Terry Mancini sent off and the abuse given was unreal.. 1985 - the Italy game was a potential Heysel. Stiles broken by the crowd, people on the pitch as the terraces were overcrowded. No stewards to be seen. The safest place was on the roof or sideline TBH. Bags of money taken out before halftime by, you guessed it, JD's auld boy, Casey, Farrell and Co. I felt sorry for the lads operating the turnstiles as the abuse they got. Lads lost shoes, jackets etc. Surges everywhere.. that brought home how bad the terraces were at capacity. |

An example of terraces being overcrowded shows how bad they were at capacity? I assume if they were 'at capacity' there wouldn't have been people on the pitch or the roof? The problem wasn't terracing, the problem was mismanagement based on greed and carelessness.

Houghton really was a class act. Our playmaker from right wing. Really tried to get it down at all times.

Half Time 0:0, few chances at either end, highlight was Aldo's tackle on Hagi unfortunately Aldo injured himself. Anyone remember if there was many Romanian fans at the game?

Massively underrated from our point if view; I don't think he was by fans of his club teams. He had an unusual style with the ball, but he was genuinely class.

From memory there was fook all Romanians at match. They were a poor country then and travel was expensive.
Most of the Irish fans had stayed on after group matches but some day trippers then as well. Great city.
