what a bizarre statement

The goal involvement measure is becoming a pain in the hole. Assists being accredited like they're goals.

Evan Ferguson 10 apps/7 goal (involvements) and sh*t like that.

Aye for a striker maybe. Different story when it comes to a midfielder.

Not really as someone still scores in the end. Look at Bobby Firmino, 107 goals and 78 assists. Teams want a player that can do both, and even look at Weghorst at United. Though he doesn't score goals he was a cheap option but United have looked better with him up front.

Someone like Ferguson could fit in well as the type of CF that Ten Hag would like. Someone that puts in the work off the ball, can link up play for the other forwards, and should know where the back of the net is.

A few thing to note from the 5-1 victory over Sunderland:

- Smallbone played excellently as a 10 behind a striker (not a holding midfielder where he had been for a while) - this is a problem position for Ireland ever since Wessi hung up his boots;

- two of his three assists were class, the other was a straight-foward set-piece delivery;

- he can take set-pieces (we don't seem to have had a proper set-piece taker for some time).

He's been starting regularly and playing well for Stoke for some time now.  He's a good player in a position we do not have many options in.

I'd have him feature in the France game, and possibly start.

smallbones part in the first goal was very impressive. took up a nice position in his own half to get the ball, passed it on , then made a huge run to get the ball back and pass into the box for the goal. we've been missing a midfielder like that for a while. added to the fact his set plays look decent, its looking like a big time hourihane upgrade

The only metric in my book is who hits the back of the net. Assists, goal involvements and all the rest is bollocksology from the likes of Sky. It's all part of the modern day soap opera to make twats feel like they are more involved in the game. Ask Roy what he thinks of all this palavar and you already know his answer. I follow the 2G metrics for a player, goals and graft.

Assists are not bolloxollogy, it's a stat and it no suprise the more creative players have more assists.

I would agree there are a lot more mirco-stats thrown at us average fans from the sport media in the last 20 years as there has been more and more space to be filled by football coverage and some or them you can roll your eyes at like (he assisted the assister) but actual assists are like one of the core stats been used for years and years and really after goals scored the best way to judge a player's attacking ability

So you couldn't care less that Smallbone recorded 3 assists?! That's his job as a creative midfielder, really odd take........

Stoke 2 up, Smallbone should have had a peno and then had a great strike on target prior to the build up for the second. Szmodics anonymous so far.

Playing really well here, should have had a penalty just there. Szmodics also denied a clear penalty just after.
We're decent enough..

Yeah tbf, Szmodics strike was clearly blocked by an arm, definite handball. Both that and the foul on Smallbone were nailed on penos, poor refereeing.

Goals and graft is what wins matches and qualifies you for tournaments. We can have all the moral victories and John OShea or Robbie Brady glory moments we want, but we need to be in the mix at the business end of things.
