For as long as McCarthy is in charge I would think Whelan is a first teamer.

MATCH REPORT:

Slovakia 0-0 Ireland

A drab affair saw McCarthy's Ireland line up in an unfamiliar, yet promising 3-5-2 formation that the fans have been crying out for all campaign. With Glenn Whelan slotting in at right wing back, it freed Matt Doherty up to take a role on the right of the back three, with Shane Duffy making way. Top scorer Jeff Hendrick led the line, and was supported in the no.10 role by the in form Aiden McGeady.

Ireland huffed and puffed and managed to get the fans into the game by winning two throw ins high up the pitch in the opening half. The second half wasn't as exciting however, as both teams retreated into their shells as Ireland protected their away draw, for some reason.

Onto extra time, with both sides tiring, McCarthy had no option but to send on Alan Judge, his saviour on many occasion.

With no more goals (or shots) for the remainder of extra time, the ref decided enough was enough and ended the game then and there. Ireland somehow still managed to lose on away goals, even though it was a one legged tie that finished 0-0.

McCarthy was defiant in his post match interview, saying he would have taken the point in Slovakia if you offered it to him this time last year, describing it as an heroic failure, and we just didn't have the players to beat a top Slovakia side.

Great to see you contributing again Mr Brick. The usual, useless, needless and unwelcome comment.

You really have too much time on your hands son.
