I agree with all that. I think that front three can actually cause teams problems. It is a good mix of pace and intelligence. Connolly is our main goal threat from midfield and as limited as Robinson is, pace hurts teams and hurts them more when someone like McGoldrick can get them in behind. At this stage it feels like the team picks itself, which isn't a bad thing.

Cheers. I agree with the other commenters - they technically can play together but are unlikely to next Thursday. And if it came to a choice of Doherty or Robinson on the attacking right, I'd be inclined to go with Robinson.

I'm aware of that, I'm not advocating for him to play in a middle 3.

Good players should be able to play anywhere. Jack Charlton had Paul McGrath in midfield, I think he played Ronnie Whelan right back once. If the team are well drilled, then a player with the intelligence and athleticism of Doherty should be able to play rightside of midfield.

If we don't qualify this isn't on Kenny. This fixture was pretty much avoidable if Mick actually went out to win very winnable games.

Isn't it funny how in an era with modern and better coaching, better pitches and non stop football on tv to emulate as youngsters footballers are worse than a generation or two ago. Football is far less interesting and enjoyable than 30 yrs ago |

Not sure. I'm sure Paul McGrath would be considered the best centre half in England and possibly the world if he was playing now. He'd also have the versatility to play a variety of positions. McGrath was top class. Whelan is better than nearly every midfielder in the Premier League now and would certainly be a stand out player if he played today. The standard of players has dropped a lot in 30 years.

Hadn't got the likes of Tablets, Playstations XBoxes etc.. (Sure some kids had consoles but not everyone). Most kids would have been out to till dark playing football on the road something you rarely see nowadays. There's defo some sort correlation there IMO

No our footballers are worse as we had a golden generation during the 80s. France have a better team now than they did in the late 80s early 90s. So do Portugal and Finland and a few others.

the sad reality is that McGrath with his training situation would probably not last in the modern game as it’s far quicker and relentless than it was.
McGrath was world class and is my favorite player but I am not sure with his knee issue if his body would have let him get to the pace of the game that it is now.

It's clearly just not, Ireland may not have as good a team, by by most other measures the game is miles ahead. Maradona was the superstar footballer in the mid-80's, but as incredible as he was his record doesn't come close to the greatest players of this generation, Messi and Ronaldo.
