Confetti and balloons.  I'd remember big games in England such as cup semi finals and there would be people throwing cut up newspapers as confetti and balloons in the team colours would be bouncing around and even falling onto the pitch.

See that in Spain. Match programmes are free at Ahtletic Bilbao and people have stacks of them torn up and throw them in the air at the start of games, goals and full time

The ripped up papers really got hold at the World Cup in Argentina , just unreal when the players came out when the home side were playing .

Back in the 70s, 80s and 90s there were no footballers with tattoos or if they did have them they weren't visible.  Now footballers look like Mauris.
