The RWC has been serious entertainment value from the point of view of Ewan MacKenna’s commentary.

Ever played a game of rugby?

No.....never.
So most players can’t play every week because of the physicality of the game?
Doesn’t say much about the modern game, does it?
No, what it says is that the game has changed enormously at the top level, where the players are now fully-professional.

For f-t training means the players are now so much bigger, stronger and bulked up etc, that the "hits" are now absolutely ferocious. Moreover, they are so much fitter stamina-wise, that the hits come so much more frequently, and for more of the full 80 minutes.

Now they mitigate this to some extent by much wider use of substitutes, plus vastly improved training and sports medicine. Nonetheless, the physical toll on top level players is so much greater than before. Or think of it this way, when did you last see a skinny, 5'7", 10 stone winger? They wouldn't last 5 minutes these days.

Perhaps the best way to think about it is by referring to NFL. There, the teams only play 16 games in regular season, plus maybe 3 or 4 more but only if they make the Superbowl. Yet even there, the ganes only comprise 60 mins play, the teams have absolutely enormous squads, and they cover themselves in padding, guards and helmets. Shocked

I think it's the Robot Wars thread you're looking for.

So Ireland-Samoa is ruled a draw, Scotland beat Japan and it's Eirexit!

I seen this but i cannot see how this would be allowed. Its the craziest outcome on earth. Would make a mockery of the comp. Surely it would be postponed for a day or so. There would be uproar.

It’s worth looking at footage from the 1995 RWC semi between SA and France, not least to see “old habits die hard”. The weather was apocalyptic and the game shouldn’t have been played. On that basis, France were due to proceed to the final due to a superior disciplinary record. However, a decision was made to play the match, and Ruben Kruger’s try ensured that The game had to go on, as no tries could still have seen the game abandoned and return to the default. In the second half France scored a try, which was disallowed, and under TMO would have stood. France would have won and gone to the final. Instead, South Africa did. The whole game was deeply problematic.

Given that game was played, I expect they’ll find a way for Ireland v Samoa.

There's always a way round these things, if you just look hard enough.

Getting knocked out by the weather is a better excuse for them than getting knocked out by terrible underperformances

Don't worry.  The Guinness ads for the '2020 Never Tedious Six Nations ©' will tell the narrative that the heroes were robbed of world cup glory due to the weather.

In real life terms, its like getting beaten up after the pub by a few lads every weekend but instead of Adrenalin in you when taking the hits, its pints of Guinness..... the day after you will feel the pain and you will need every single minute of 6-7 days to recover!

Has there been a more low-key big sporting tournament in recent memory than this RWC. Time zones, Ireland being sh*te as usual etc. but it's like it's barely on.

I think the reasons for that are more to do with your 2nd reason than your first. It'll get going to some extent at the knockout stages though, at the minute its a bit like the old version of the CL where they had 2 group stages, until everyone more or less gave up watching the first group stage as they knew the outcomes in advance*. Or most of them anyway.

*Yes, I'm aware there have been a few minor upsets in the RWC so far.

Picked the wrong week to quit sniffing glue.....

It’s sh*t. Was looking forward to it for ages but now it’s here it’s an anti-climax with the format poor (5 team groups), the Irish team doing an Ireland and coming up short (so far) and the time zone is a killer. The the Ireland let down was the biggest buzz killer.

Hoping it picks up as we get to the knockouts but with that being the last stop on the road for us, really does feel like an afterthought.
Much more buzzing for the Ireland u21 match this weekend than the rugby

That’s sport nowadays
A lot of inevitability involved and many tournaments that only really ‘start’ in the latter stages

Purely the timezone. Everone is at work when the games are on and half the people are in bed on the weekends and miss the games anyway. Its almost happening in spite of people. If games were kicking off at 8pm in the evening things wud be a little different.

Would they? Most people would still watch the big games and ignore the rest. The gap isn’t closing between the traditional teams and the others at all.

The time zone is certainty a factor.
The Wales v Fiji game tomorrow should be good but the majority of people will be in work.
If it was on in the evening the viewing figure would be way up.

Sat is some day for sport. Rugby starts at 5.45am NZ v Italy, then France v England @9.15 and then Ireland at 11.45.

Lots of football from 2pm onwards.

Is it? I wake about six naturally and still won’t watch New Zealand against Italy. I can’t think of anything worse!
