That will do his confidence a world of good going into a new season with a new club and a new lease of life.
But lets not get carried away just yet. It was a league cup match with a Championship team against a middling League One team. He need to replicate this side of his game a lot more Took his goals well but what was important was the positions he was getting into centrally at the edge of the box, either holding his position there for knock downs or making a late run into that position. In seasons gone Knight would not be in taking up those positions, he would be off running himself to the ground around in other areas. Hopefully he plays regulary in that advanced midfield role rather than being slung around different roles and positions but also hopefully he is a bit more selfish in his play, looks to get on the end of knock downs and crosses in the box to get more reward for the general effort he usually puts into every match he plays.

14 goals during his entire Derby career. Now 2 goals already at Bristol. Ballon d'Or 2027?

The highlights make Knight look like the second coming of Paul Scholes. Long may it continue.

Jason Knight - 8 Two goals and a performance of pure tenacity and also ingenuity in the way he picked his moments, and analysed the space to arrive late into the penalty area and trouble the scoreboard. It's impossible to overlook the narrative that as Alex Scott looks bound for Bournemouth, the Irishman provides that missing attacking thrust from midfield. Jason Knight - 9 An outstanding display. Made two difficult chances look easy with his two goals and played a part in City’s fourth, too. Popped up all over the pitch and was a key part of City dominating the midfield. An exciting addition. Hopefully this is finally the start of Knight becoming the player I think he can be - which is the first name on the teamsheet in midfield for us. The last two years at Derby have been a disaster for him, playing at right back in League 1 half the time last season. He was far too loyal to a club that has shown in the past that it doesn't deserve players' loyalty.

He played as an attacking midfielder in a 4-2-3-1. So just behind Nahki Wells.

Copy and paste here from the esteemed Bristol Live: Just a minute into the second period, Knight doubled his tally and gave the Robins a two-goal cushion, with Roberts setting him up brilliantly to claim his second assist of the game on his debut. Knight followed up his brace with an assist to put the cherry on top of a stellar display as Nakhi Wells then proceeded to round James Beadle in goal and put City firmly in the driving seat. Knight was substituted alongside Joe Williams and Andy King on the 61st minute, with one of their replacements Kal Naismith, who made his return from injury, instantly burying a fifth for City with his first couple of touches. It was a day for the new boys on BS3 as Roberts and Knight stole the show, with a special mention going to 17-year-old Ephraim Yeboah who came on for the final 20 minutes to make his senior debut after signing a professional contract this summer. |

Definitlely, and one who should have got him out of derby a long time ago. Its a decent move for where he is now.

You're probably right about a club whose billionaire owner claims to have invested £250m there and now wants out. But Bristol is a big city with a population of over 700,000 and an attractive candidate for future growth with the right filthy rich owner. I'm not sure Knight is the ignition for such movement but he might catch a wave.

I think they will be challenging for the play offs - it is as good a move as any of the others that were mooted i.e. Stoke/Birmingham. Bristol City could quite easily finish highest of those 3 next season. As for the attacking midfield role, I genuinely hope that's not where Knight plays as that just isnt his game imo. He doesnt have the level of vision/creativity/passing range required imo. I'd prefer to see him used as a box to box 8 making use of his tenacity and running power, either as part of a two in central midfield alongside a 6, or on the RHS of a 3. Anyway probably even more important for him is that he isnt constantly shunted about from one position to another. Pearson's treatment of Sykes might raise a few flags, given he shoehorned him in to the team as a RWB initially. Maybe Knight will be used as a RWB again (I actually think if he concentrated on that position he could do very well there and it is a position Ireland will need players in pretty soon).

They have very little quality in their side. It would be very easy for them to get dragged into a relegation battle. Rotherham and Plymouth will probably go down. Bristol City will be part of a group with QPR, Cardiff and Birmingham for the other place. I think theres a massive chance they get relegated. Let's see in a few months. Maybe I'll be massively wrong. It's a higher standard of football for Knight, but I dont expect him to stand out in any meaningful way in what will be a poor season for Bristol. Equating Pearson getting that Leicester squad promoted, who were clearly the best squad in the division when they went up, and thinking that somehow means that he can get a poor squad up - there is no connection there.
