Playing well and Smallbone looking good.
But they are behind to a very poor Sunderland team with a long-ball smash & grab. Stoke can turn it around in the 2nd half based on what I've seen so far in this match, where they look much better than previous matches I've endured. |

Michael O'Neill sacked this morning so interesting to see how this will affect both Kilkenny and Smallbone with whoever takes over eventually.

I'd say it's good news for them both.
Stoke have been putrid, so hopefully a new manager with better methods can improve these players more than what would have happened had they been playing on like that all season. |

Sean Dyche being the early favourite for the Stoke job is possibly not what we need when we have two young, creative ball playing midfielders on loan at the club...

Man would laugh down the phone if Stoke tried to ring him. He's sitting at home with his big pay off from Burnley waiting for Lampard to get the sack.

Well, would Alex Neil be good for Gav and Will?

He would be good but zero chance he leaves Sunderland! File with Dyche surely!

WIth Neil now in situ, the next team sheet will be interesting - could end up being a wasted 3 months for one/both of Gavin and Will if Neil opts for the more experienced options in midfield. Let's hope not, Neil has always seemed like a reasonably progressive ball playing type. Still think Gavin has been slightly overhyped on here, he looks tidy enough, but I wouldnt consider him a definite future starter for Ireland by any means and that's despite the paucity of our options in there. Smallbone on the other hand has shown glimpses of being a future star, intelligent footballer with great touch and vision. If he can continue to maintain/improve his fitness levels off the back of the serious knee injury last year, he can be a PL regular and provide that little bit of creativity from an advanced midfield area that Ireland are crying out for. There are goals in him too as his recent performances for the U21s have shown.

Looks like bad news on the face of it - on the plus side, Smallbone came off the bench on 68 minutes and was involved in Stoke's equaliser.

Just watching Jim Crawford's presser about the U-21 squad announcement. He said Kilkenny has a grade 2 MCL tear in his knee which will have him out for a few weeks. Takes 6-8 weeks for that to heal so hopefully he will be back around mid to end of October.

Kilkenny back from injury and on the Stoke bench. Hopefully he can kick on now and get game time.

He'll probably need to go elsewhere to get proper gametime. Too similar to Smallbone (lightweight technical CMs), they'll only be fighting each other for minutes.

I'm beginning to think that Neil doesn't rate this Kilkenny fella.
