Hourihane (we know his cieling), Horgan to start.
Also, it's a friendly camp so we can bring extras. |

Throwaway comments made without much thought or deliberation on an internet forum processed and ingested by another poster and re-packaged as "clamour" amongst other things. Not exactly worth some of the finger pointing that has gone on here.

Do you think Kenny is going to leave out a player who's played PL, and is a mainstay in a promotion-chasing Championship team that has risen up the table since Heckingbottom reintegrated him into the starting lineup, in favour of a player who's played 19 games in the Scottish PL, having played in Slovakia and Swiss second division before that, and having struggled in English football before that? I don't. Adam Rooney, Conor Sammon and Jonny Hayes looked like possible International standard players in Scotland and either/and failed to step up in England or at international level. After an eye-catching, and brief, spell in the Eredivisie, Daniel Crowley was hyped up beyond belief by mere virtue of the fact he was playing in the Championship, regardless of the fact he was often playing quite poorly in it and was let go with little fanfare. He's now back where the hype train started after another couple of uneventful spells in League One. Jack Byrne, similar story. I don't want to sound like England is the be all and end all, and I am a proponent of Irish players expanding their horizons, but there's a common enough theme here where Irish players aren't quite good enough to play at a high enough level in England that would justify a call-up, despite finding other climes more favourable. Horgan and O'Dowda are mentioned as other players he could possibly replace in the squad; Horgan has never played CM and O'Dowda has only intermittently made squads under Kenny. History tells us that there are only going to be two or three additions to the squad in March. Kenny can't call up all the boys who have been touted at various points since the season began. On a final note, it's worth mentioning that Ronan's manager has recommended call-ups for Joe Shaughnessy (29) and Charles Dunne (29) based on their fine form this season. Shaughnessy was abject at League One and League Two level and Dunne was a squad player at several League One and League Two teams without ever establishing himself at any club. It speaks to the standard we are dealing with here. Ronan may be good enough for a squad place, but it's far from a certainty.

Agree on Hourihane. No idea what justifies a squad place let alone starting 11. What does he actually do?

He's the mainstay of a promotion-chasing Championship team, don't you know.
Having started almost one third of their matches this term. |

I already referenced the fact that the vast majority of matches he was benched for came under Slavisa Jokanovic, who had them languishing in the bottom half before getting sacked, whereas their climb up the table has coincided with him starting more. But, yeah, go ahead and skip over that anyways.

I'm not trying to catch anybody out here. Specifically what does Hourihane do for Ireland? I don't care that he played in the premier League. I don't care that his team is going for promotion.
When he pulls the shirt on for Ireland what does he do and why is it crucial that he's in the Irish squad?

the problem isn’t the peoples opinions fluctuate it’s that some opinions are clearly off the wall and surely are fired up with out thinking them through before posting .
Take Idah after the fact he only got 5 minutes or so against charlton in the cup lads were packing him off to league 1 and comparing his development to playing the guitar. When in fact smith was using him more than any other Norwich manger and if fact is playing more since then as part of the best performing Norwich team in 5 years. It’s just shoot from the hip on here. |

Hello?? If I was to ask people here what Josh Cullen does nearly everybody would be able to write a few lines and justify not only his selection in the squad but in the starting 11.
Conor Hourihane. Go...

He's started 7 out of their last 9 league games, and 8 out of their last 10 in all competitions, since Jokanovic was sacked, and SU haven't lost any of the league games he's started (W6 D1). Since coming into the side, they've climbed approximately ten places in the table. I'm obviously not saying it's all down to him, but throughout his career he's been a mainstay of top 6 Championship teams, and the one half-season he wasn't, he was an integral part of a Barnsley side who punched above their weight after promotion. But, yeah, he does nothing. He should move to Motherwell.

Hourihane hasn't been great for Ireland, he does seem to have a bit of quality about him on occasion, but quite often he isn't up to the pace of the game as he is far far too slow, cant cover enough ground and limp in the tackle. he covers these deficiencies up with a few goals/assists as he is pretty decent from set pieces. but for a team like Ireland who lack a star man everyone needs to put in the work, and Hourihane just isnt the man for the job.

100% on the ball with your comment, Hourihan not suited to us though decent from set pieces. Wouldn’t have him in the squad but best of luck to him, always look out for him at SU. Also I think a lot of people talking about Ronan but not sure many of us have seen him other than goals. I also agree Scottish football outside of old firm is prob Div 1 level - Cleary from Drogheda straight into St Johnston team. In saying that Ronan seems like he would be worth a look at, but Festy fir me is the one that can add a new dimension along with improving Idah.
