What an utterly ridiculous comment...

Anybody with an ounce of culture will be saddened by this.
The metric system in France was introduced after the French Revolution of 1789 (year not time of day).  Anyone with a spark of cop-on would know that.Ouch

Not as bad as the damage sustained from WWII, anyway.

Tell us all about this worse damage it suffered in World War II, please.

Yes by Napoleon to blockade English goods being sold on the continent. Great man, responsible for introducing a lot of laws that are still in use today. The Napoleonic Code etc.

what an absolute tragedy. my heart sank when i saw on the phone the first news reports last night. i couldn't watch the news coverage when i got home - it was just so devastating. i had a similar feeling the time isis destroyed the wonderful city of palmyra. fortunately nobody lost their life on this occasion.

thankfully it seems the rose stained glass windows are intact albeit damaged. i'm not a religious person but i still like to visit fabulous buildings of architectural or historical value...be they religious or not. i visited notre dame on a number of occasions, the last time being around a year ago. the north rose is just so captivating which still has the original glass from the 1250's Cry

notre dame is such an important icon in human history. i sincerely hope france can restore the cathedral to its former glory.

I must say, I really don’t like the narrative that’s going around social media etc at the moment trying to minimise the impact of the disaster, as there are more important things to worry about than the destruction of a building.

I cannot understand how some people can’t look at this from the cultural and heritage point of view, and the fact that the building will never be the same. It will be closed to the public for a long time and will deprive countless tourists, students, academics, members of the faithful, culturally interested folk who have no regard for religion of seeing much of what it had to offer for many, many years.

I don’t believe you can mourn something inanimate. But while the American Beauty thing about the plastic bag is a bit lost on me, objectively Notre Dame is an extraordinary loss.

A couple of private donors have already offered €100 million and €200 million to the restoration fund.
No shortage of money there then.
