Open Championship.

That’s like calling the EFA the FA.

No it’s not.

Calling it the open smacks of smugness.  You have the US Open the Irish Open the French Open and so on.  Calling it The Open gives into that smugness which is there with the FA etc.

No it isn't Confused

It's The Open Championship.  It's actually specified in the media contracts that it's not to be referred to as the British Open.

Yes by the same sort of people who think the world is still in 1885. The contracts say the same about Aviva and Lansdowne Road, still doesn’t stop me and others calling our home ground Lansdowne Road

You could say exactly the same about the FA too.  This is from

It's not the same though.

Explain why they have  the right to call the tournament  “The” Open and the EFA don’t have the right to call themselves “The” FA

Point is the don’t want to change the name
To British open due arrogance.  When other tournaments came about such as the US open etc they should have changed name to the British Open. But they won’t.

A bit like the FA for many years but who eventually will have to back down

It's called the open because it predates the others by decades ffs, who cares? Enjoy the win like the rest of us.

I like Irwin as a poster but his overuse of the Confused emoji on here is belittling and unwarranted when having a pretty standard discussion.
