Calling it the open smacks of smugness. You have the US Open the Irish Open the French Open and so on. Calling it The Open gives into that smugness which is there with the FA etc.

Yes by the same sort of people who think the world is still in 1885. The contracts say the same about Aviva and Lansdowne Road, still doesn’t stop me and others calling our home ground Lansdowne Road

Point is the don’t want to change the name To British open due arrogance. When other tournaments came about such as the US open etc they should have changed name to the British Open. But they won’t. A bit like the FA for many years but who eventually will have to back down
