Yep at League 2 level, it’s a far cry from the standard that the two Italian strikers are playing at. It’s not a major criticism - I rate both O’Shea and Masterson quite highly but you’d have to admit that our defenders are probably a bit further behind the rest of the squad in terms of game time at a high level. It’s a bit more understandable as defenders develop later on in their career but it’s just a small observation.

I'd like to see someone called up as there's a good chance there will be a chunk of this u21 squad will be in the senior squad should we qualify for the finals.

Don't rate him on recent viewings. Thought he was poor in Toulon. Has pace, but knocked off the ball too easily, coughing up hard-won possession. Would have liked to see in-form Anthony Scully from West Ham called up - an ideal replacement for Connolly.

Massive challenge for the lads against a loaded Italy team. Plenty of their 11 have significant Serie A and Premier League experience.
This will be our team's biggest challenge other than the outstanding Brazil U23 team that outplayed us in Toulon - no shame in that. A draw here would be a very creditable result in that context. However, we have real quality ourselves. Below is a crude 11 in the U21 age-group who are NOT even in the squad for various reasons. I've taken slight liberty with the positions, but it's a solid team and shows how good our strength in depth is at this level right now. GK: Travers - Bournemouth - with the seniors Def: Ryan Johansson - Bayern Munich Def: Bobby Burns - Hearts - Belfast lad, currently reg'd to NI. Def: Thomas O'Connor - Southampton on loan at Gillingham Mid: Luca Connell - Celtic -injured Mid: Armstrong Okoflex - Celtic - currently reg'd with England, despite being Dublin, born and bred. Mid: Will Smallbone - Southampton Mid: Conor Noss - Borussia Moenchengladbach F: Aidan Keena - Hearts - made a good few first team appearances F: Anthony Scully - West Ham - 7 goals in 6 appearances at PL2 this year F: Glen McAuley - St Pats after Liverpool - refinding form now. Other mentions: Will Ferry, Southampton; Conor Hazard, Celtic, currently reg'd to NI. |

You could also have Josh Barrett, Ryan Cassidy, Ryan Nolan, Kian Flanagan and Aaron Bolger who all have a decent chance of making it in the game at a decent level.

Point well taken. That's great depth.
Josh Barrett might feel slightly hard done by given how many first-team appearances he's made for Reading, and he didn't put a foot wrong in his limited time in Toulon (although didn't excel either). Edited by Luis Amor Rodriguez - 07 Oct 2019 at 3:19am |
