Yes we have a chance. Italy look very strong defensively, they maybe happy sit back as a draw will do them, they are possibly the ones to hit us on the counter attack.

We would "only" have Nations League for the seniors when the Italy game is played next Oct - an argument for playing Connolly, Parrott etc. with the u-21s and trying to qualify for it??

If we can get 1 ‘top-top’ player from every age group we would have a top class side. Reality is for a country like ours, you get 2-3 top players every 10 years. We just need good technical players and the exciting thing about this group is there are a good few who you think have a great chance to go onto have a good career for themselves and Ireland and key difference is a lot of them are actually playing with their clubs at a decent level. We haven’t had it so often in the past that so many of the group were part of the league cup teams for premier league clubs. We might have had one or two but seems like all our lads are at least that stage.
It helps that they are actually Irish with no chance of leaving the set up for the most part! Edited by t_rAndy - 20 Nov 2019 at 5:46pm |

Barring injuries you would have to say it is very likely that Connolly, Parrott, Molumby, Ronan, Knight, Collins and O'Shea are all looking like lads who will make the transition to the senior game without much of an issue considering they have all played a bit of senior ball already (Parrott the exception but he is the most talented of the bunch).
Then the likes of O'Connor, Coventry, Idah, Kelleher have all been brilliant for the 21s, you would have to fancy their odds of coming good too but they seem a little bit further away from first team football at their clubs. Now the chances are one or two will have rotten luck with injuries or whatever but even still that is basically a full team I've just listed of lads you have to be very positive about. And that is without even mentioning the LoI lads who have all been playing lots of games at club level for the last year!

I swear if you’d told me five years ago that this would be our 2019 team, I would have believed you
Ian Lawlor Tommie Hoban Mark O’Brien Noe Baba Sean Murray Conor Clifford Samir Carruthers Alex O’Hanlon Conor Henderson Eoghan Stokes Mikey Drennan Difference is, none of these lads produced the results in green at underage level like this current crop has at u17, 19, and 21 |

You asked if I'd be anyone from history, fact or fiction, dead or alive:
I said "I'd be Tony Cascarino, circa 1995" |

Reckon we have more points in the u21 group table now then we had in all of Noel Kings campaigns.

Still got more 'highly rated' (for whaterlver that means) potential in lads like Ryan Johansson (hopefully) luca connell and ryan nolan.

Any idea how Nolan is performing at Arezzo? He is playing regular and Inter have a 50% sell on clause if he moves

Had a look, played 8 of first 10 games, been benched for the last 5, so he must have remained shaky

Some class goals. Lovely finish from O'Connor seeing as hes a fullback. See him after scoring trying to get the ball back. Thinkjng about going on to win the game. Different mindset. All great build up play and finishes. Great stuff.

Would be a lot less confident of those three making it than the likes of Parrott, Connolly, Molumby etc. I'd say the chances are Nolan will probably fall away into obscurity or maybe already has, Connell has made no impression at all at Celtic unlike O'Connor and Afolabi who are apparently very highly rated there and Johansson is miles off getting any competitive minutes for Bayern and might not end up qualifying for Ireland anyway.

Based on game v Italy (watched live) & last nights game on the box
> Kelleher - decent but won't be our number 1 for seniors >Lee OC - 50+ caps >Collins - 10+ caps >O'Shea - 10+ caps >Masterson - was good against Italy but poor last night >Molumby - 50+ caps >Coventry - 10+ caps >Parrott - 50+ caps >Idah - 50+caps >Obafemi - depends on injuries >Ronan - 25+ caps >Kilkenny - 10+ caps >Knight - 10+ caps Overall you would bite the hand off for that. Serious serious potential there. Kenny on OTB saying we should blood them through younger |

I'd be amazed if Collins and O'Shea didn't win a lot more than 10 caps each. Same for Coventry; he shows how the supposed "Glenn Whelan role" should be played, you do your defensive work but also be brave and constructive on the ball. He might fly under the radar a bit due to all of our attacking talent but he's consistently one of the most impressive U-21 players imo.

can we be guaranteed to hang on to the likes of Coventry.

I could agree with you but then we'd both be wrong.

As long as he stays on the fringes at west ham, his contract up in summer and he is reluctant to sign a new one. Can see him in championship at best next season. Dont think there is need to worry
